I think Aoshi 1 is (technically) the only fight Kenshin has where he wouldn't have killed his opponent with a proper sword

This just an observation that I found interesting. The majority of the time the choice of weapon makes the difference, and so many times Kenshin would have killed with a proper sword, except for 1 time.

Various henchmen, Gohei, Sano, Hannya, Raijuta. Saito, Senkaku, Sojiro, Aoshi 2, Shishio, Enishi... against almost every single opponent Kenshin has landed a blow that would have crippled or killed an opponent. Aoshi is basically the only opponent he never actually hit with his sword. He used the hilt of his own and Aoshi's own sword to hit Aoshi in the throat two separate times, knocking him out.

The reason I say technically is just because it's demonstrated that past Kenshin wasn't above finishing a downed opponent to make sure they're dead, so unless the other Oniwaban got there faster he would still kill Aoshi.

I'm uncertain how to classify Gein, though, as he might be the second. However, if Kenshin wrecked his suit with ARNH that badly with the dull side of a sword I can only assume Gein would have died if Kenshin used a proper sword with the move as it would be much faster and thus stronger.

Gein even says he would have been finished without the impact absorption mechanism and is too drained to keep fighting afterwards, so a little more power, even without direct contact, feels like it should be enough to kill him.

I guess if you REALLY want to stretch the definition of a "fight" the artist guy with the bombs would live, but the fight got interrupted before Kenshin would need to land a blow and it's obvious he would have won if it had continued.

Would Kenshin adjusting the sword length against Aoshi really help?

Aoshi has a shorter sword than Kenshin, which gives him higher speed to block all of Kenshin's blows before responding with punches or kicks to wear the opponent down. To circumvent this Kenshin adjusts his hold on his sword so he's not gripping the bottom of the sword but slightly above the crossguard. While this does cut his own hand a little it does allow Kenshin to get a good hit in.

I can understand shifting the center of gravity but his hand is still low on the sword so the weight distribution wouldn't change that drastically. As well, it doesn't change that Kenshin is still wielding a heavier full-length sword compared to Aoshi's smaller and lighter sword even if he was holding it dead center where the weight distribution would be almost equal.

About adaptations...

Am I the only one who doesn't seem to have a favorite between any adaptations of the series? I, for one, prefer the original through its art style and animation, but I don't want to throw any shame on the original as well. It has its own flair like the calmer hue of the colors, or it's more expressive on the emotions, plus the comedy is top notch as well. So I am just that curious on why a lot of people are so against the remake, that they just say watch the original? Is it because of nostalgia? Is it because of its perks? Is it because you don't like the modern version? I really want to hear all of your thoughts on this, thank you for reading this and interacting in advance.

Do people not understand that u can separate the art from the artist?

As a long time fan of this series, it makes me sad, how people hate on rurouni kenshin just because of wht watsuki did. It's arguably one of the greatest stories ever with a beautiful ending. It really deserves more recognition, yet people dont talk abt it and hate on it just cuz of wht he did.

Had these in storage forever. Seen some pics of them pop up recently.

Some of the DVDs are a bit scratched up, but anyone know of a way I might be able to get them into the hands of someone who might cherish them?

Saito vs kenshin

Garage sale find

Went for some VHS tapes and saw this and had to grab. In perfect condition too! Was one of my favorite shows growing up so I’m pretty stoked to have a full physical copy now. I am curious what this worth though (not that I would sell unless it’s a some absurd amount).

Help with Finding Tomo's Diaries

Hi all,

Big Rurouni Kenshin fan here. Back in the early 2000's, I was gifted a few volumes of the manga in Japanese. A few years later, I ended up going to Japan for a high school exchange program and I ended up collecting the rest of the series. I brought back with me 20ish volumes of the 28 volumes written. And it has been one of the cool things I've kept in my home since.

I remember when searching for these manga volumes, there were some other books available. If I remember correctly, there were 3 books that weren't mangas, but were diaries. I think they were Tomo's 3 diaries. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Is that correct? Or am I confusing this with something else?

Thanks in advance!

Why does the new anime feel so... Bad?

Most agree that the old is better than the new anime. But why?

I tried to answer this, but I just couldn't. It's like not one big thing but more like hundreds of subtle things that make it less enjoyable.

Anyone got any idea why?

How should I go about acquiring the original Rurouni Kenshin anime?

I am looking to buy the original Rurouni Kenshin anime with the (not Sony) english dub. Is the 20th anniversary collecters edition box set off of playtech asia a good idea, or should I try to acquire the original volumes individually

Why doesn't Kenshin just draw the Last Sword and flip it?

When he's fighting against Cho with his broken sword to protect Iori he loses it as well as the sheathe, leaving himself at a massive offensive disadvantage.

Iori's dad grabs Shakku's last sword and throws it to him, but Kenshin refuses to draw it because it's not a reverse blade sword and it's too dangerous with his vow not to kill to draw a bladed weapon. And because the sheathe is made of wood he can't use that either.

In the end it just so happens that the sword IS a reverse blade sword, but if it WAS like a normal sword then just flip it and fight normally. Its not like he hasn't flipped his reverse blade sword on occasion when he's not using it on a person, like against Sano's Zanbato, so its possible for him to fight with a flipped sword.

I don't get why he refuses to even check it at least besides for a dramatic moment and reveal.

Shishio's ken ki was on another level

The 96 anime didn't quite capture it as well, but in the manga the force of Shishio's ken ki deforms the impact site. And as Saito pointed out, splitting leaves is a far cry from making flames rage.
