Sunday's shaping up to be our wettest day in weeks, thanks to Hurricane Isaias — currently a major Category 3 in the Gulf, making landfall on the Florida Panhandle tonight.

The setup: Isaias falls apart after landfall, but its moisture — a huge plume of warm tropical air — gets lifted north toward Virginia. Saturday stays mostly dry; rain moves in Saturday night and runs through Sunday: 1–2" for metro Richmond, up to 4" near Hampton Roads. There's also a low-end tornado threat south of Richmond Sunday afternoon as the remnant energy interacts with a front.

High pressure (~1024mb) remains anchored over the Mid-Atlantic today, supporting widespread VFR conditions, light winds, and daytime highs in the low-to-mid 70s.

As split-flow moisture advances aloft, high-level cirrus will filter across Central VA Thursday and Friday. High pressure shifts offshore by Saturday, allowing return southerly flow to tap into tropical moisture and bring shower chances back to the region Sunday into early Monday.

Post-frontal high pressure is building across Central Virginia, bringing light northwesterly flow, low relative humidity, and clear skies.

Highs will hover near seasonal averages in the upper 60s to low 70s. Strong radiational cooling overnight will allow temperatures to drop sharply into the mid-to-upper 40s across Metro Richmond, with cooler rural spots touching the low 40s.

Today likely marks our final day of 90+ degree heat of the season as a cold front approaches from the Great Lakes.

The front drops south across Central VA late tonight, accompanied by a shallow cold air advection surge with N/NNE winds gusting 15-20+ mph. Flight restrictions, low clouds, and scattered rain will lock in for Saturday and Sunday with highs dropping into the low 70s.

A secondary front early next week will usher in crisp fall air, pushing mid-week lows into the 40s inland.
