Killing time on San Juan waiting for ferry time

Our Vrbo has us out by 10:00 am and the only ferry I could secure is 9:50pm. I needed the 10:50 am ferry to Anacortes. I have 2 college kids and 2 dogs to kill 11 hours being homeless waiting for 9:50 pm ferry. We have a truck.

Any great ideas or excursions we can do with dogs for 11 hours in San Juan Island July 22 Wednesday?

Thanks for your help !

What do you need from local news?

Hi there, I'm Alex Rochester, KUOW's Digital Community Engagement Producer. My job is to talk with the KUOW audience and Puget Sound region residents about their local news needs.

Our midday broadcast show and podcast Soundside is a newsmagazine radio show that keeps you up to date on local issues and then dives deep to build understanding. The team are currently asking listeners and non-listeners for their hopes, dreams and constructive critiques of the show. Anyone who cares about local news is welcome to participate!

Please fill in this survey or share your answers to the following questions in the comments.

If you're a listener, what do you want more or less of in the show?

If you're not a listener, what would it have to feature to feel worth your time?

Do you want more stories that focus on politics, community-solutions, outside of Seattle, arts & culture, and/or panel discussions with multiple perspectives? Do you want less of something?

The team asked for listeners to weigh in because they take feedback very seriously, so the more detailed your thoughts the more it will help them understand how best to serve the public with the news they need.

San Juan or Whidbe

We would have 2.5 days (2 nights and 3 days). Is it worth it to visit San Juan? I would love to visit, but not sure if it's enough time... Or is it better to tour Whidbey?

Lopez Island bike lock question

I’m going to be volunteering on Lopez Island for one month this summer, and will bring a bicycle for transportation (no car). Can anyone share their experiences on the type of bike lock needed? Would the pictured lock be ok?

secluded camping

hi!! my partner and i are trying to plan a camping trip for my birthday in early august and i was wondering if anyone has any good recommendations for any off the beaten path campsites, we decided to plan this trip kinda late so i was expecting to find limited results, but just figured i should ask here :) i have some fond memories of staying in different places in the san juan islands as a kid, but i also know that campground reservations are probably filled up this late into the season.

Is it necessary to make a reservation for the earliest ferry from Port Townsend to Coupesville during the week?

I’m currently transferring to NAS whidbey Island From PSNS in Bremerton. Is it necessary to make a reservation for the port Townsend to Coupeville ferry during the week?? Even for the earliest ferry at around 06:00 am?? I’ll most likely be commuting daily until I find a place on the Island.

Planning to arrive 90 minutes early for 9 AM ferry ride without reservation (Anacortes to Friday Harbor) on July 3rd. Will I still miss it?

For the travelers with experience, should I give myself more time?

Edit: should clarify, taking the car of course.

Just another ferry question

Good morning!

I will be traveling to Friday Harbor on July 23rd. I will have a car so did make a note to make a reservation two weeks before but I had a few questions.

  1. Does anyone recommend leaving the car there instead? I will be coming back on Saturday, July 25th

  2. I thought I saw round trip pricing but is that only for same day travel?

  3. I arrive in Seattle on the 23rd at 10:30 and am renting a car. Is reserving the 2pm cutting it too close? The next one out would be 4:45

Thanks so much in advance!!! 🤍🤍🤍

iOS Ferry Schedule App Beta

I've been working on an app that presents the ferry system data with an appearance more in line with modern iOS. It uses public WSDOT data*. Currently runs on iOS and watchOS, I intend to make an iPad/Mac version eventually.

I'm looking for people to try it out. Feel free to check it out even if you don't think you will provide feedback.

Current Features:

  • Schedule (with drive up spaces, sailing notations, next 7 days)
  • Vessel Locations
  • Terminal Cameras
  • Alerts
  • Favorite Routes
  • (Optional) Use location to auto-pick departure terminal

TestFlight Link (iOS/watchOS 26.0+ Required): https://testflight.apple.com/join/cEqC1sP2

Two questions - Lavender Farm & Whale watching

Hey all! We're visiting Friday Harbor this weekend and I see that the Pelindaba Lavender Farms are permanently closed. Is there any other lavender farm we could visit?
Secondly, we aren't going on a whale watching tour so what's the best location to do whale watching? Is Lime Kiln Point State Park good? Any specific time for a higher probability?

TIA!

UPDATE -

Alchemy Lavender Farms are now on the same spot as the Pelindaba Farms and are open throughout, however if you wanna buy ice cream or any merch then it does have certain timings. Lavender was kinda fully bloomed, but should look even better around next week.
About Orcas, unfortunately or rather as expected, didn't sight any. However, did see a lot of fox, deer and possum.

‘40s or ‘50s cartoon map of San Juan Islands

This piece lives at our family cabin on Orcas Island in the San Juan islands in Washington state. It is a painting on plywood, probably purchased by my great-grandfather who was a doctor in Bellingham, WA. It’s mounted to the wall, so I’m unable to take a picture of the back. It’s approximately 4 feet tall.

I’d like to track down more information on the presumably local artist, who signed it “Eide”. They include themselves painting over Chuckanut Bay.

The piece is primarily a map of the San Juans, but is covered in cartoon characters engaged in things like drunken boating, drowning, inner tubing, and a whale whistling at a woman in a nudist colony on Waldron Island.

I can say with certainty that it’s newer than the 1930s, as it includes the WPA-built tower on Mt Constitution on Orcas Island. Our family bought the cabin in the 1940s. The artwork is in a 1940s era “airplane nose” style.

RV services on SJI

Hello all! My partner and I are heading up to San Juan Island in our RV in a few weeks, and are going to be camping off-grid on private property. I’m wondering if anyone has tips on where we can refill our on-board propane tank, dump our grey water tank, and refill water. Thanks in advance!

FedEx Delivery Issues?

I’ve been waiting for a package I shipped over three weeks ago. Over 9-days past and each day has a “delivery exception” with a promise of delivery the next day. How do you get your packages that have been shipped via FedEx?

I was told that if the truck is full and your package isn’t on the truck, you are out of luck that day. It’s the worst customer experience I’ve ever had. #fedex #sucks
