Anyone else get a very bad flu type virus recently?

My family all got this very intense flu like sickness a couple weeks ago. It just won't go away. Sicker than we've ever been. Anyone else get it? How long did it take to get back to normal?

Can anyone point me toward casting for background actors in The Conjuring?

Hey everyone! I’m really interested in getting into background acting/extras work and was wondering if anyone knows where I could find casting calls for The Conjuring movie.
I’m 23, located in the Capital Region of NY, and would absolutely love the opportunity to be a background actor if they’re looking for people. I’m open to traveling for the right opportunity as well.
If anyone knows the casting agency, website, Facebook group, or where they post background casting calls, I’d really appreciate being pointed in the right direction!
Thanks!

When do we protest?

With everything going on in the city, surveillance on every corner, flocks, helicopters being used in stings against children, ICE stealing our neighbors, friends and family. Our POS drunk mayor sold our city out to corporations like Rush Gaming and metroplex and threw up billboard advertising the gentrification. We watched as our city became a testing ground for surveillance. We need to come together and do something about this.

Help - fireplace stores asking owners to pull permit for gas-insert install

We are new home owners and want to install gas insert in existing wood-burning fireplace. We contacted four different well-known fireplace stores (also well rated on Google) and they all are requiring us (owners) to pull building permit for the work. And every one of them are also asking to pay them in full on or before the day of installation.

Is this normal in capital region? If we pull permit, aren't we responsible for any code violations or not up-to-the-code situations? I am not sure if we can get town inspection done on the day of install itself. We don't want to be in a situations where their work fails town's inspection, and we are out of money as well as stuck with open permit + more expenses to fix the issues. I am not saying they are doing bad/shady work; but I am just worried about liability shift if anything goes wrong. How do people navigate this when getting their gas-insert installed?

Property Boundaries

I know that it’s common for city/town or private surveyors to lay down stakes for the property boundary. Does anyone know if this was common in Schenectady? I may look into fencing in my front yard or doing more gardening around the front of the house.

I know this is not a substitute for actual surveying. I am looking to better understand the dimensions of my front yard to gain a better understanding of what the yard could look like and to gather quotes.

Vale’s Little Stranger: Born to be Murdered

I have spent a lot of hours exploring Vale Cemetery and the other old burial grounds scattered around upstate NY. After a while, you begin to recognize the rhythms: the grand monuments to defy oblivion, family plots crowded with local names, and the small stones quietly shrinking into the earth.

Some gravestones reflect entire dynasties.
So many others offer only mystery.

In the old County Lot at Vale, a choked, weathered stone leans into the ground, exhausted from holding its secret:

LITTLE STRANGER
DIED
APRIL 10, 1884

The stone caught my attention. It felt unusually haunting and lonely even for a cemetery. What I did not know then was that inscription was the final line in a very short story, beginning three days earlier in (yes, IN) the Mohawk River.

Shortly after noon on Monday, April 7, 1884, a fisherman named William Shutter was working on the Mohawk when a market basket became tangled in his fishing lines. Inside the basket, concealed beneath heavy paper and a blanket, he discovered the body of a newborn boy.

The Schenectady Evening Star reported that physicians examined the child and determined that he had been strangled shortly after birth. The newspaper gave the story the grim headline “Born to be Murdered.”

The child’s body was brought to the undertaking establishment of Charles N. Yates, a Schenectady businessman who operated both an undertaking service and a furniture store. Often, furniture makers also served the funeral trade as they possessed the tools needed to construct coffins.

Women from the city reportedly came to the undertaking rooms to visit the child and pay their respects. On April 9, the Evening Star announced the baby would be buried the following day in Vale Cemetery’s county burial plot.

So, best I can tell, the date carved beneath “Little Stranger” was probably his burial date, not the date of his death and on Thursday, April 10, 1884, Schenectady buried a child whose name no one knew.

While the newspaper report openly blamed the baby’s mother, relying mostly on assumptions and the merciless language of the period, their accusations were never established as fact.

But death, like life, has always had its class system so Little Stranger rests in Vale’s old County Lot, the public-burial section associated with its Potter’s Field.

Its where Schenectady buried the poor, unclaimed or unidentified. The graves did not receive carved angels or polished granite, many with nothing more than “Unknown Man.”

Rest In Peace, Little Stranger. 💜

Travel / Activity Suggestions for Old Guy with No Car

I'll probably regret posting this, and delete it. Please bear that in mind should you reply.

I'm in my 60s. I'm retired, and poor, so I'm on a very low budget. I have no car, no drivers license, and no family or friends to hang out with. My mobility is limited due to health issues which require me to pace myself rather slowly, and I need a bathroom urgently, many times per day. Embarrassing but hey I'm old right.

Also I have high social anxiety, and I can not ride buses or trains. Maybe a train if it has a bathroom.

The walls are closing in. I feel trapped in my prison cell apartment. I need to get outside, and DO SOMETHING before I die. I want to visit upstate parks, and other attractions. I want to go fishing, take nature walks, photograph wildlife... exercise, breathe the fresh air and soak up some sunshine.

I like historical places, and almost anything outdoorsy. I can't stand being closed indoors for long, and I'm averse to large crowds. I'm kinda into spiritual / metaphysical stuff. I like crystals, and caves. And arts and crafts, music, farms, gardens, and animals. And boats. (If the boat has a bathroom).

I'm in Stockade, near State street and Mohawk river. I've taken many walks to the river, but that sucks now, and I must expand my experiences before summer ends.

Suggestions please. Really anything would be welcome, even if it doesn't suit me. Should I hire a driver to take me somewhere? I don't want to get stranded in somewhereville or somewherekill as night falls.

Obviously my options are sorely limited. But what would you do if you were in my shoes? I haven't made any local friends and I'm still pretty new to the region. TIA

it must be stopped.

So i was driving my car through central park with my family and next thing you know it i make a joke turn and suddenly im facing about 30 kids on bikes. i try to just stay in my lane, but one of them gets the bold idea to try and do the wheelie trick where they riding at u and at the very last moment they dodge your car. unlucky for me one of them scraped my car with their metal bike and now i have a big scratch on the side of my car. not only that.. i had my daughter in the backseat as well.

Whenever i try to speak about this situation i always get shot down for “being to soft” but this has happened to me more than once already. i know im not being targeted it’s just kids having fun. but isnt there a limit?

I'm going to college here, so I haven't been here very long. I've found the Nightmare Market, but that's about it.
