phasing issue with sub bass. Serum 2

Using Serum 2 for the first time. I'm getting a phasing/wobbling effect when I play low sub notes from Serum. I've already looked through all the posts and bits of advice that concern this issue and I cannot pinpoint what's causing it. It happens even when I'm merely using the dedicated sub osc and absolutely nothing else (no effects, no LFOs, no osc with unison, detune, randomness, filters etc.) I've spent a while switching lots of settings on and off and I cannot fix it.

I'm wondering whether hardware could be a contributor in this.. I'm using a cheapish laptop and wireless soundcore headphones (I'm just making Serum presets, I'm not producing music right now). Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Serum goes... piano?

Quick heads up- Got into modelled pianos and tried to bake something in serum 2. Its pretty basic sample modeling of piano where note, velocity, envelopes and such are being used to mainly modulate the sample formant, "timbre" control.

Its highly velocity sensitive and i ran alot of classical pieces midis when tuning it, tried to find a balance of range and natural tonality.

Felt the upright had definitely better qualities for it, since it has nice and even lows and highs.

Rest is really just trying things. I wanted to do this sort of a moving in the room effect, which is not super realistic but it ended up being pretty nice extra tone control.
Basically it has a mix of convolution reverb, panning, volume and filter control baked into a knob that mimics the effect of moving from close front, to farther away to the back of room rightish.

Some notes

Velocity curve adjusted higher, goes into pop and rock territory, where as adjusted lower goes to the noire, film, ambient types. Keeping it linear should give fairly good amount of playable variations.

Its not kontakt or anything but fun experiment, maybe a piano in a pinch. It'll eventually be part of my multi genre preset pack with bunch of bread and butter stuff, figured i could drop a demo preset for yall if youre interested into that.

DL and try, critique welcomed

How do you make this UK Garage “engine rev” Reese bass in Serum?

Hey, I’m trying to recreate a UK Garage / UK Bass style bass sound.

It sounds like a Reese bass, but with a rising pitch — almost like a motorbike engine revving up. There’s also some wobble in the filter and possibly glide between notes.

I’m trying to figure out:

  • What this type of bass is usually called
  • How the “revving” effect is done (pitch envelope? pitch bend? MIDI?)
  • How the filter movement is typically set up
  • How to combine all of this in Serum

I feel like it’s some kind of “combo” bass with multiple modulations layered together.

Any tips or breakdowns would be super helpful 🙏

Serum Sample Randomization

Reddit isn’t fond of me posting links here, but by all means ask for the preset and I’ll send it your way :)

How to make this bass by peekaboo

Hey all, i’ve been trying for a while now to recreate this bass in serum 2, it is the trill sounding bass that is teased with a LPF then comes in full at the drop here, I have sort of come close but if anyone has some tips on how to recreate it let me know, thanks.

Cmb L6+ question

Can someone explain to me why the comb filter in Serum 2 is a flat line, but a comb shape in LFO Tool? I’ve tried increasing different knobs like resonance, cutoff and drive to get the comb filter shape but it remains flat. In LFO tool it sounds amazing and I would like serum to sound like that too. What am I doing wrong?

How to recreate this sound in Serum 2?

Hi everyone,

I'm learning sound design (complete beginner here). I watched a lot of youtube videos on Operator / Serum 2 and downloaded some presets, but I'm struggling to create different kind of sounds from those commonly presented in youtube videos (psytrance, drum and bass, dub techno...).

I'm trying, for example, to recreate the first sound from this track: https://abyssalsoundworks.bandcamp.com/track/switchblade

But I have no idea where to start from! I tried to use Synplant 2 Genopatch, but I'm having a hard time to convert it into Serum 2. Is this even something that can be created into Serum 2 using wavetables? Should I instead use an audio sample?

Thanks for reading me, cheers

Granular loop pauses before each loop. Big blocker, please help.

Hello. I’m relatively new to serum and music, so forgive me if this is an easy fix. Basically, I want to use a custom sound, but it’s a one-shot, and I’d like to loop it so it plays continuously for a longer midi notes. However, I’m having trouble making it loop correctly. There seems to be some kind of pause between each loop, kind of impossible to use if I need to have this one-shot/sound to last longer. I tried setting the loop duration per blue marker, but the loop runs past it and it fades out. If I trim, it sounds less noticeable, but the pause is still there for the loop. Which the pause is also present on a longer midi note in clip mode.

I’ve searched Reddit and online, but I can’t find ANYTHING regarding this. I saw some people with similar issues tamper with crossfade, offset, density, length, scan, but nothing worked, so I feel like I’m missing something obvious.

One thing to note is that this is a preset/sample from my library in splice. Splice did not give me the download prompt for this specific sample within the application, but I still imported the sample by going to the file destination, and dropping the WAV file into the granular mode. This sample also did not directly say it was for serum in splice, but it would be very odd to me if I couldn’t edit a fully custom sound at all correctly.

Recorded kick track as trigger for Serum

Is there a way to trigger a synth kick patch in Serum through kick transients of an analog recorded drumset instead of MIDI? If yes, can anyone help me figure this out? If no, has anyone got a recommended alternative?

Are private label serums actually unique or just the same base formula?

I have been experimenting with a number of serums lately and they seem to have different effects based on the places where I got them. So I have been able to purchase some from Amazon and I find that in as much as it is the same brand or company manufacturer, the results can vary. This is now making me have questions like is it possible that some places do get counterfeit products or does the company manufacture for different target markets or audiences?
I have had some really pleasant results with products I have gotten from Amazon as compared to the ones I have purchased from my local distributor. They tend to last longer, have better coverage and even they tend to sit lighter on the skin even if I apply a little bit too much. The products do allow my skin to rejuvenate and heal without me feeling like I applied a lot or did too much with regards to my face since we are all aware the face is a very sensitive area. So I guess I should just stick to what works best although I would like to know why the difference is there.
