Posting this as a warning for anyone in the KC area who gets one of these “Wheels of Fortune Match & Win” mailers from Shawnee Mission Ford.
I received a mailer advertising several prizes, including $5,000 CASH. My mailer appeared to match the $5,000 prize, but I know how dealership mailers work, so I wasn’t about to drive all the way there based on that alone.
I called the dealership first.
I gave the person on the phone my PIN from the mailer and my address specifically so they could verify whether I had actually won before I made the drive. They checked my information and told me yes, I won.
So I drove to the dealership.
Once I got there, they had me fill out my personal information before I could receive my “prize.”
And what was the prize?
A lottery scratcher.
That was it.
If they had told me on the phone, “Your PIN qualifies you to come in and receive a lottery ticket,” fine. I wouldn’t have gone, but at least that would have been truthful.
Instead, I specifically called to avoid being baited into making a pointless trip. They verified my PIN and address and explicitly told me I had won, knowing exactly why I was asking. Then I drove there, handed over my information, and suddenly the advertised cash-prize promotion turned into a lottery scratcher.
I understand that promotional mailers have fine print. What I have a much bigger problem with is an actual dealership employee confirming over the phone that I had won after checking my PIN and address.
So, let this be a word of caution. Don’t get duped. Dont drive a Ford.
Has anyone else in the area received one of these mailers or had the same experience with Shawnee Mission Ford?
New to the area, just moved in two weeks ago. What are your favorite parks/outdoor activities in Shawnee?
Seems like it flew somewhat under the radar, but last night the City Council repealed the ordinances passed a few years ago that allowed for the use and sale of fireworks in Shawnee. 7-1 vote with Knappen opposed.
I'm sure some will squawk when the news circulates, but it's the right move. It was completely out of control this year. People will still do it, but hopefully this reigns it in some.

Former spot that houses Rent-A-Center a while back near the former location of Pine & Bamboo garden. No idea on ETA but tables and chairs were visible inside and they had a bunch of new TVs in boxes

I just bought a home near Antioch and I35. A man knocked on my door today and identified himself as an adt security sales rep. He said it’s normal for them to come to newly sold homes and pitch security equipment. He asked to come inside to check out the doors/windows. I asked him for a business card and he said he didn’t carry one. That threw up red flags. I did not let him inside but I’m nervous now that he might have been casing the house.
Is this normal for new homeowners? Or should I contact the police? I haven’t set up full security yet I only have a ring doorbell and I changed all the locks/garage code.
I really hope I’m overreacting but I just got a weird feeling.
