Ways to do Lathe stuff like on Youtube

I'm a new user of a Mark 5 500 I got used. I haven't set it up yet, but have been watching various videos on Youtube of simple starter lathe stuff. Many of the examples that go beyond a rolling pin seem to be things like round boxes and I recently saw a whistle video. Most of these seem simple enough to start - get an adapter, get a chuck that can grab a small piece of wood, install and try it out.

Until they swap the non-rotating tail part for a forstner drill bit to hollow the thing out. Can you somehow mount drill bits stationary on the other end of the shopsmith? It seems like swapping over to somehow clamping the thing for a drill press mode or the like would be fraught with getting it aligned and very slow. But my online searching doesn't seem to be working to get an adapter for the tailstock to drill chuck or whatever.

Am I just missing something?

Stripped Quill Stop Screw

Hey all!
I was just given Shopsmith and I’ve been taking it all apart and giving it a much needed clean. However when I went to remove the screw on the top to take out the quill it stripped. Anyone have any ideas of what to do? Should I just leave it in and clean it from the inside the best I can or is there a way for me to get it out. (And are there any replacements available as I haven’t seen any)

Looking for 510 manual

I was gifted a Shopsmith 510, with several upgrades. While I have used this for some rudimentary cross cuts, I now wish to do some more advanced projects. I would sure like to find an owners manual. I don’t seem to see it on the Shopsmith site, as a pdf, or hard copy.
Anyone out there got a pdf file?

I bought this off Facebook without really thinking about it because my dad had a Shopsmith and I was being sentimental. My daughter and I do quite a bit of woodworking together. We have lots of free-standing tools (SawStop, drill press, miter saw, lots of cordless hand tools, etc). The only function that I can really see myself using in the short-term is the lathe. I know, I know... there are better lathes out there that wouldn't take up as much space.

I have already read lots of hate about this era of the Mark 7 (after I had already committed). Now that SS is back in business, and reading that many pieces can be 3d printed, I'm wondering if it's all bad...

I bought it for $50 (with several boxes of accessories). Do I cut and run? Sell parts? Restore and have fun with it? What do you think?

Modifying a 10ER for space?

Hi, I'm looking at a used 10ER, hopefully finalizing a deal in the next 48hrs. At the moment there is limited space in the garage AND for the near future I'll only be doing very short projects (think bowls) and likely only using it as a lathe.

Would it be reasonably straightforward and safe to replace the large horizontal poles with shorter ones to make it a short lathe? I'd keep the old ones to revert it when I move to a bigger place, of course. I assume my plan is do-able, after watching tear-down and assembly videos of MarkV's but thought I should ask to be sure. Thanks!
