What does the future of the FP look like?

Lately I’ve noticed a lot of exciting open source hobbyist projects using the FP, and it got me thinking about how the camera will hold up in the long term.

Though I’m biased, I really believe that even though it’s been discontinued, the FP, and especially the FP-L will remain not only an incredible value, but also one-of-kind tools for those of us looking to shoot photos or make films without all of the bells and whistles found on modern cine cameras.

What do you guys think?

Powering vis USB?

Do people have luck with this? I have a dummy battery I can use with a V-Mount for longer shoots, but I am trying to power with USB for smaller ones, but it doesn't seem to work - the camera stops recording when the battery shuts off, since it doesn't seem o be drawing any power. Maybe it's my power bank, but it works fine powering other cameras...

A custom intervalometer on a Raspberry Pi for the Sigma fp

I created a custom intervalometer using a Raspberry Pi that works for the Sigma fp (also for my Nikon D5600, and it may be easy to adapt to other cameras that can be controlled over USB).

I made it with the total solar eclipse of 12 Aug 2026 in mind: you need bracketing, two very different setups (partial vs totality), and a way to switch between them mid-timelapse without breaking the interval cadence. It handles all that, plus scheduled unattended start (fire right at totality) and Wi-Fi setup on the device.

How it was made (plus a real-world test): https://www.elcacharrista.com/en/articles/intervalometer-raspberry-pi-eclipse/

Code (MIT): https://github.com/jahurtado/fp-lapse/

Timelapse test (moonrise, HDR bracket): https://youtu.be/8lsBzhjCesQ

Feedback welcome — especially from anyone who's wrestled the fp's USB/PTP control.

7aritsans Lens

So this is probably a silly question, but I got this 18mm lens to use with my FP and S5iix. I noticed that the rear element protrudes very slightly from the lens mount. Is there any risk of damaging the sensors with something like this?

Search more than 400+ lenses for the Leica M and L mount

In case you haven't come across it yet, over the past few years I have been curating LEICAmount.com (no official endorsement by Leica Camera AG), a searchable database of Leica M Mount, L Mount and S Mount lenses in production.

The crown jewel of this database is the list of 220+ Leica L mount and 180+ Leica M mount lenses from various manufacturers, that can be searched and filtered by specifications; such as mount type, focal length or aperture.

I've been using the database myself for looking up lenses for my Leica M2, so I am confident that you can make it your regular place for comparing and selecting lenses.

The next integration for this Autumn will be adding LTM lenses currently in production. But feel free to drop me a line if you spot any error, or see any lens in production missing from this database.

Warning about new Viltrox AF 28mm 4.5 lens for L mount: immidiatelly malfunctioned and caused my FP to switch off

10 seconds after the first photo i took with it, it dramatically shifted focus (almost as if it was a zoom lens, weird) and switched off. I thought my battery had died, but no, it was the lens. While it was on, i could straight up NOT switch the camera on.

Then i noticed, that there is a smell of burning electronics/plastic, and quickly took it off. It was indeed coming from inside the lens/camera.

Ive messaged Viltrox about it, when they answer i will post it here.

i dont know if my FP has any lasting damage. Definitely wasnt healthy for it. Seems to work with another lens, but I cant be sure. Ill update if anything happens.

Stay away from that lens!

FP/L and BF

Any FP FP/L owners here who also have the Sigma BF? I'm curious about how the BF compares. Thanks.
