Help me find the name of an art piece
Hi all!
I visited the Smithsonian American Art Museum December 27, 2025. There was a painting that has resonated with me and have thought about at least once weekly since then.
It was in the building with a large mobile over the stairs on one of the upper floors, I think it was the America exhibit. It shows a two story, neutral colored house with a porch and windows in a field. I think there may be an American flag hanging from the porch, but I can't remember that clearly. The windows are dark, but in the shadows of an upper floor window, there is a person with a gun pointing directly out of the window.
For me, when viewing the piece in the gallery, it looks like a picturesque, quaint house showing the expanse and peace of living in the country. Only once you get closer to study the piece do you see that what seemed to be a calm and gentle reflection of the American countryside is a jarring pull back into the reality of staring down the barrel of a gun. It genuinely startled me when seeing it for the first time, and has continued to influence how I've reflected on my time in America and abroad.
Can anyone help me figure out which piece this is? I searched the SAAM art archives and couldn't find it. I'm hoping a Reddit sleuth or two will be able to help me parce it out.
Thank you in advance!
URGENT: Notebook lost outside Air and Space Museum (May 2026)
URGENT LOST: Small black Moleskin notebook, about the size of an adult hand, outside the Air and Space Museum (left on a bench besides a garbage can) on 5/12/26. This is VERY important. Please help me find it. Small reward offered. I'll send contact info privately if found...
National Zoo Lost Gifts: help me give these gifts back!!
Internet, please help me find these two so I can give their gifts back. It was left on a CaBi bike off of King Street in Alexandria. Looks like they spent the day at the National Zoo on 5/9 AND looks like they had a lovely time and bought some very cute magnets and a bird notebook.
I didn’t want to leave it on the street and would love to give or send it back to you.
Reddit, SOS
PS I love birds too
