Thoughts on living/working in State College

Hi all! As of Saturday, I officially graduated with my master’s from Penn State! I traveled from Wisconsin to State College for the ceremony and absolutely loved the area while I was there.

I’m 30F, no children, have a long-term partner who would likely not move with me, and a dog. I currently live in a Wisconsin town of about 50,000 people and find it lacking in a lot of areas, so I’m curious what State College is actually like to live in full-time.

I enjoy trying new restaurants, thrifting/vintage shopping, bookstores and reading, the occasional hike, theatre and the arts (musicals, plays, live music, etc.), and sports—specifically baseball. I don’t need something going on every night, but I like having options and new things to explore.

I’ve been looking at a few job postings in the area and at the university, but before applying, I wanted to hear from people who actually live/work there. Do you find there’s plenty to do, or does it start to feel boring or repetitive after a while? What is it like socially for people in their late 20s/30s?

Also, when you want more restaurants, shopping, concerts, professional sports, etc., do people tend to travel to Pittsburgh, Philly, or somewhere else?

I really loved State College, but I know visiting for graduation is very different from actually living somewhere, so I’d love to hear what it’s like day-to-day. Thank you!

Gym suggestions - PSU student at The Heights

Hi all,

Looking for gym suggestions - for a PSU student (male) living at The Heights.

  • Weights and cardio primarily
  • Flexible hours
  • Equipment availability
  • NOT downtown - needs to have available parking

One of the closest is Crunch, but the reviews indicate a lot of problems with billing and predatory contracts - looking to stay as far away from those issues as possible.

Thanks!

Parking Permits All Sold Out

Hi I’m a transfer student and I juts realized that parking passes were available. I’m living in South halls and lots 81 and 83 are already full. I wanted to bring my car for the fall and spring and now I don’t think this we’re anyplace to park on campus. I reached out to transportation services but anyone have advice or competitive private parking lots listings near South ? Worst case scenario I guess I could try the parking garages but those are like $1,200. Any advice helps thanks !

24/7 Parking space

Hello, I'm an out of state Penn State student desperately looking for a 24/7 parking spot that would still be available to buy. I am currently working, so a car would be needed to maintain employment. If anyone knows anything I'd love the help.

Volvo Mechanic?

Recently moved to the area and seeing if any Volvo owners have a recommendation for a Volvo mechanic?

Previously accustomed to going to a Volvo dealer, but there are none in the area and they are very expensive. Any local suggestions appreciated !

Where can I find pawpaw in State College/Centre County?

Hi everyone,

As the title says, I’m looking for pawpaw, which is a tropical tasting fruit native to Pennsylvania. It is impossible to find in most normal grocery stores, due to it not transporting well.

Typically these fruits show up only at farmers markets, so if anyone knows one happening soon, or other location where I can find the fruit, please let me know!

Has there been any updates on the measles outbreak?

The last update I am seeing is from August 1st. It seems to be slowly spreading and I have an immunocompromised parent.

Anybody have any more recent updates?

Metrics or Actual Impact?

Am I the only one who thinks that PSU has, errantly, shifted their focus from actually helping students have a transformational experience in college in order to have a real impact in their lives and in the lives of those around them to only talking about metrics? Who cares if you have awarded 1M degrees if the people graduating right now aren't able to find employment yet have racked up a ton of debt to get that milestone number piece of paper? Is it just me?

house cleaning

So I know this topic has come up here in the past about who people use for cleaning services in their house. We had a service a while back that was great, and quite reasonable ($120 each time) but we had to pause because our financial situation changed. Now we're looking to get something going again and unfortunately our previous service is no longer available. I'm getting quotes for like $200 per cleaning all the way up to a possible $1,500 for an initial deep clean. (Eek!)

I guess I'm curious about two things: 1) do people have a cleaning person/team/service that they love? and 2) what is a reasonable amount to pay? For reference we have about 2,000 sqft, 3br and 2.5 baths. So not huge. Maybe my brain hasn't caught up with inflation or something, but I'm shocked at how expensive this seems!

Studios for non-students fall/spring all taken?

I contacted basically every non-student housing company in the area (Apartments.com), looking for a studio apartment, was excited they’re in my price range, but then I either haven’t heard back, and the two that did are full. Is there some shortage or? I’d like to not have to commute from Bellefonte because I share a car with my brother. Any advice would be great, thanks!
