Adapter (injury episode) vs Ghost of you (MCR)

holy shit, this took about 10 minutes of lying in my bed to clock but these songs are so similar in structure, composition, melody, and tones

in adapter listen to the “something’s wrong with me” lyric just before the chorus

in the ghost of you listen to “and i can’t just forget her” also just before the chorus

both lines lead us into a crushing chorus with the vocalist crooning smoothly over a dense wash of guitars

even when the chorus leads back into the verse you get the exact same abrupt stop of instrumentals but continuation of vocals through that quiet gap on both tracks

if you wanted more… the lead up to the breakdowns are even similar with a short ride cymbal fill, and the silky tones of the clean guitars in both songs are almost identical

don’t get me wrong both songs fuck super hard and i’m so happy that static dress seem to be carrying the torch for emo/screamo/hardcore, but infused with that new deftonesy/loathe style vocals and production

Why are we so obsessed with Static Dress?

Following up on my recent visual study on Loathe, I wanted to dive deep into Static Dress for the second issue of my zine project (DISTORTION).

Honestly, leaning on early-2000s nostalgia has become such a lazy trick in modern alternative music... but the way Static Dress does it feels entirely different. It doesn't feel like a cheap throwback; it feels like a surgical, living universe.

Between Olli Appleyard’s background in photography, their cryptic VHS aesthetics, hidden lore, and absolute DIY control over every frame and merch piece, they’ve elevated the post-hardcore visual identity to a whole new level.

I put together this 7-slide layout analyzing their visual universe, Olli's creative direction, and why their approach to nostalgia actually works.
