Stoat FAQ

Hey Stoaters. It has been six months since the last post addressing frequently asked questions, so it felt like time for another.

1. Do you have video chat, screen-sharing, and voice chat?

Yes! They're live and available to all users on Stoat For Web, Stoat For Desktop, and Stoat For Android. You can read more about it here: https://stoat.chat/release-notes/93eb1f4ec77444ca9fb13617e0e6c0b1

We're working on bringing more options to the streaming features.

2. Is Stoat down? I can't access it.

Probably not. You can check at <https://stoatstatus.com> for real-time status updates.

If the service appears functional on the status page but you're encountering a problem, such as a blank grey screen, your antivirus, telecommunications provider, or internet service provider might have us incorrectly flagged. This is an error on their part and out of our control, though we try to appeal when this occurs.

If you encounter a block, try switching networks (such as to mobile data from Wi-Fi, or vice versa), whitelisting us, or using another device to access the service until your chosen provider relaxes their block.

3. Is Stoat open-source?

Yes, most of Stoat's code is licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License (AGPL) v3. You can check the individual licences in the code repositories on GitHub: https://github.com/stoatchat

4. Does Stoat have federation?

Though you can self-host Stoat, the platform is not currently federated. For some further info on the matter, you can consult Does Stoat have federation?.

5. Can I make a bot or client?

Absolutely! We'd love for you to build on or around the platform. There are many libraries developed both officially and by the community that you can use, and there are servers on-platform for discussing development. You can find everything you'd need to get started at https://developers.stoat.chat

6. Can I contribute?

Certainly. We've got open roles here: https://outline.stoatinternal.com/s/454dd0eb-44b5-41f7-b1d1-b6accec577a0

You can see the problems impacting scale here: https://outline.stoatinternal.com/s/4117b2be-901d-4463-a204-bd8c756b2122

You can also support the project financially. Stoat has a Ko-Fi page which is used to cover operational costs. Everyone's support here has gone a long way to helping the platform quickly scale without being too stressed about financials. If you send £3 or more to the platform, send an email to support@stoat.chat with some proof so we can give you a supporter badge on your profile.

7. Is a subscription planned?

Yes, a subscription is planned. Exactly what form this will take is not entirely defined, but the intent is not to paywall things unnecessarily and to focus on ensuring the service can be operated sustainably. This means paywalling things like higher-quality video streaming and keeping cheap-to-provide things (like custom banners, animated profile pictures, and platform-wide custom emojis) free.

Currently contributors and team members aren't paid (though some do have open support pages if you wish to contribute to them directly). A subscription would assist in making sure that people are reimbursed for their work and can dedicate more time to the platform.

Profiteering gluttons we are not!

8. What are your plans for age verification?

Stoat must comply with the law as applicable, so some form of age verification will be implemented in relevant jurisdictions as necessary. Regardless of our sentiment on age verification legislation, from a legal perspective we cannot just refuse to comply.

We have no plans for an overzealous blanket requirement and only intend to implement it where and as legally required. There is ongoing discussion about how to ensure any verification we implement respects privacy, handles data responsibly, and does the right thing by our users.

It is likely to be externalised to a third-party due to the great deal of complexity intrinsic to handling such sensitive data. We'll have more to share in time and welcome discussion regarding age verification.

Currently, Stoat has taken the temporary measure of blocking access to age-gated content where necessitated.

9. Will you have end-to-end encryption (E2EE)?

We don't currently have E2EE, but it is a long-standing planned feature on our roadmap to introduce E2EE for direct messagess. It takes a lot of work to implement E2EE, and we have to make sure we get it right. A poor E2EE implementation is far worse than no E2EE.

10. When is Y feature going to be available? What is the ETA?

We can't provide accurate estimations for when new features will be live, so we don't. It isn't fair to you, or to Stoat's contributors, to give inaccurate figures and set false expectations.

Stoat is developed rather openly, so you're more than welcome to check-in on discussions and work happening on GitHub.

11. Do you automatically purge old content?

No, we don't automatically purge old messages, images, or uploads. Here is a link to a screenshot from 2021: https://cdn.stoatusercontent.com/attachments/1MFriR8AzllFWtm1snFk9gJVyZwyM3wSX350ZNpW4d/original

12. Is Stoat vibe-coded?

No, Stoat is not vibe-coded. See here for more info: https://github.com/orgs/stoatchat/discussions/1022#discussioncomment-15442591

13. Is Stoat English-only?

Not at all. We welcome other languages completely. Diversity is good and if we didn't want people speaking other languages we certainly wouldn't go through the efforts of translating the app and ensuring we have platform moderators that speak different languages.

That said, the official Stoat server on-platform is English only (with the exception of the support channel) purely for the sake of moderation. We don't have the capacity to ensure there are moderators speaking every language in that server around the clock, so we limit it to English.

14. Where do Stoat's GIFs come from?

Stoat sources GIFs from our very own service: Gifbox! You can upload your own GIFs to the platform for anyone to use and the catalogue of available GIFs is growing by the day.

Gifbox gives us full control to make the Stoat GIF experience as good as it can be, and down the line you'll be able to link Gifbox to your Stoat account. For developers, it even has an API for you to use.

You can read more about Gifbox here: https://stoat.chat/updates/introducing-gifbox

Let us know of any other questions you may have, and we'll endeavour to answer them. Remember, we're a small team working as volunteers and we have jobs and lives atop all of our Stoat commitments.

Hello Brazil! Welcome to Stoat.

Olá! Brazil has completely suspended video and voice sharing on Discord, so we've had rather a lot of people show up at Stoat.

We weren't quite expecting such a surge of people all at once, so you might need to bear with us for a moment while we get everything in order. Real-time streaming is very intensive for Stoat to provide and given the reason for the influx of people, there is a lot of real-time streaming happening on Stoat at present.

Our team is working flat out to ensure Stoat's infrastructure remains stable and can host everyone trying to stream at present, but you might experience a little bit of instability while we adjust to this new load. Our systems are managing it quite well for now.

Thanks so much for understanding. We're doing our absolute best to stay on top of it. Welcome to Stoat!

Is there any way to change your name/username?

I've been looking for a way to change either of the two and the most I could change in the profile menu was banner, profile picture, pronouns, and bio. Are name and username fixed to whatever you chose upon making the account?

Will Stoat ever actually be comparable to Discord?

I see Stoat being touted as one of the closest Discord alternatives, so I spent some time setting up Stoat on my home server last night. After playing around with it for about 10 minutes, I ended up shutting down all the containers.

The fact that anyone can just sign up and join my server if they find it is a security nightmare. I'm sure there is some needlessly complicated way to disable that, but I was hoping for some kind of admin panel or something.

I would really like to use this instead of Discord with a few friends while we play games. Can't even use the app without having to add some arguments to the shortcut once the app is installed. No one is going to want to do that, and I absolutely hate web/browser apps.

Installing self-hosted stoat using wnstify docker-compose.yml

Has anyone installed stoatchat with the installers from wnstify? ( YouTube ) After looking through the repository it does seem like it would help lockdown a self hosted stoat server. I've been playing around with it on a test server and I'm having trouble with the script setting user file/folder permissions. I can run the docker-compose.yml as root and manually change the permissions but that leads me to believe that I've done something wrong with the underlying Docker install.

Self-Hosting advice needed

I am kind of new to self-hosting stuff, got my first proxmox server setup running recently and am now looking to hook up a vm specifically for stoat...

Only problem is, I think the self-host is a full like stoat client, not just a single server? With it's own account/auth logins stuff?

Is there some method to not have logins, but instead invites? or maybe disable logins and I make accounts for people that want to join?

And then they all end up on a default server?

Also could one disable people's abilities to make new servers entirely? Only allowing myself to do it?

I'm sure there is a reason for the self-host thing not to be just a single server that you join via the normal desktop client, but i can't help but feel that not many people will need a full login auth server system thingy where anyone can just make their own servers on your machine....

Stoat Enhanced — bringing Discord-exclusive features to Stoat

Hi! I'm working on a personal project: Stoat Enhanced, a modified client for Stoat inspired by what Vencord does for Discord.

Full transparency: I'm not a coder. The entire codebase was written by Claude (Anthropic's AI), based on my ideas and direction. I'm driving the project — deciding what to build, testing everything on my end, debugging with Claude when things break — but the actual code is AI-written, not mine.

Project goal: Stoat is a great open source alternative to Discord, but it's still missing a number of features that are currently only available on Discord (rich presence, custom themes, and more to come). Rather than waiting for Stoat to build these natively or forking the entire client, this project adds a plugin injection system that enhances the official client without altering it directly — similar to what Vencord or BetterDiscord do for Discord.

Already working:

  • Integrated CSS theme editor — built directly into Stoat's Settings panel, with theme importing, live editing, and the ability to revert a modified theme back to its original version
  • Custom Rich Presence — a "playing..." / "listening to..." status, a feature Stoat doesn't have natively, with identity verification to prevent impersonation

In progress / planned next:

  • Automatic display of other users' status (visual badges in the member list)
  • More "Nitro-like" features, but free for everyone
  • A community theme-sharing system, so people can create and download themes easily

Early alpha, not stable for daily use yet — this is a project I want to grow over time, not something ready for everyone right now.

Current version: v0.1.0-alpha
Repo: https://github.com/djell1l/stoat-enhanced

Open to feedback, feature ideas, or contributors if anyone's interested.

Discord might get banned in Brazil, so we need to make a change

With the recent threat of a potential Discord ban, my friends and I decided to test out Stoat. After just a few minutes of use, I noticed a few things:

  1. The interface needs some tweaking so that elements fit together properly.

  2. We need more audio settings, such as sensitivity adjustments and better noise suppression options.

  3. Due to the lack of settings, I can literally hear other people typing.

  4. The color controls in the appearance settings seem a bit confusing.

  5. My friends reported that the app gets stuck on a gray screen upon opening. The app couldn't do it, so they are using the browser version.

  6. There is significant lag when connecting to rooms, as well as a delay in the avatar border highlighting when someone speaks in voice chat..

  7. I tried sharing my screen three times; twice, I was disconnected from the call, and several things glitched out simultaneously.

That’s all I managed to notice in just a few minutes of testing. I really want Stoat to become a formidable competitor to Discord, and I believe you guys can pull it off.

Is there a plan to make Stoat more stable, mostly in removing the need to see "reconnecting" every few seconds and needing to Ctrl-F5 so often, especially after a reboot. Is this a known item and on the roadmap? Googling tells me manya people complain about this. Curious as to the plan.

Willing to pay a premium for a more stable server/auth server for my community if that ever becomes a business model that helps this come to fruition.

When streaming on stoat everyone can hear themselves?

So ever since the streaming option launched my friends and I have noticed that you can hear everyone in call in the stream itself. We can't seem to fix it whatsoever, and it causes us to keep any stream someone is doing muted at all times, is there something we're missing or is this something that's waiting to be fixed?

Why is Stoat relatively slow at sending messages?

Hey everyone, well, maybe a lot of you don’t know this, but Discord could get banned in Brazil (this won’t amount to ANYTHING because the person pushing this case is very clueless about it, and if she’s not careful, she might not even be able to do that), and I’m testing out Stoat here, and I actually kind of like it :)

But something I find strange is that it takes a long time to send messages; the voice chats seem to freeze, and it takes a while for it to open and log me into my account.

Can anyone explain to me why this is happening?
