Swapped iPads for scale models at our new community studio in Sunset Park.

Happy Tuesday, everyone,

So like many parents (and let's be honest, adults too), I’ve been actively fighting against relentless screen time. Back in 2020, my son and I swapped the iPads for plastic model kits armed with a manual, precision nippers, and loose parts.

Watching a kid go from initial boredom to 3 hours of uninterrupted, absolute focus was wild. No notifications, no algorithms. Just the satisfaction of building a 3D masterpiece with his own hands (check out the picture of what he finished!).

It completely changed how we connect, and it turned into a massive mission.

Next month, we are moving out of the apartment and officially opening up a boutique, 8-bench scale modeling, and STEAM lab right across from Bush Terminal in Sunset Park. Called Brooklyn Buildz.

I want to make sure we are building exactly what the local community actually wants for after-school, weekend, and summer programs.

I'd love to hear from the community:

  1. If you're a parent, what kind of hands-on, tactile activities have actually successfully pulled your kids away from screens?
  2. If you're a hobbyist/builder, what are the biggest roadblocks you face trying to build in a cramped NYC apartment? (Fumes? Space? Noise?)

Our Grand Opening is locked for June 12th & 13th, and we are running a 30-day Kickstarter starting next week to fund the pro-grade ventilation and workspace tools for the 8 stations.

If you want to see our layout, grab a private pre-launch link, or just talk shop about local summer programs, drop your thoughts below! I'll be hanging out in the comments to answer questions.

Sith Lightsaber Sun in Sunset Park

The Sunset was crazy today because of the poor air quality and elevated ozone pollution. On the plus side this made the sun a surreal color. The sun was bloody red. No filter. There were an insane amount of hipsters in the park too.

“Loops” is a serialized walking audio mystery through Prospect Park that explores themes of loss, time, media, fame, and obsession. It is planned to be released in five parts over the next few years, and Parts 1 and 2 are now available.

To walk “Loops,” bring your phone, headphones, perhaps a portable battery, and maybe a flashlight. Simply put on your headphones, follow the instructions at www.loopsprospectpark.com, and play the tracks. It will take you about three hours, and is free to do with a suggested donation of $10.

Park Slope liberals priced out as bankers takeover neighborhood

Finance bros are taking over already expensive Park Slope and what's intersesting about this article is this quote "The developer that’s buying the building doesn’t want us in here. It’s a bummer after 36 years,” Moore said. “It’s the times. When we moved in here, this neigborhood was primarily working class families. It’s not now. Sunset Park, which is now currently working class families, might be the demographic that we fit in with.”

The displaced Park Slopers are eyeing Sunset Park as the obvious next destination.

In Sunset Park, businesses blame fear of ICE for slowdown

I'm a reporter covering race and immigration in New York City for the local NPR station (WNYC/Gothamist), and I recently wrote this story centering on Sunset Park.

I'd love hear any thoughts about the story or ICE activity in the neighborhood, from local residents. Feel free to DM me as well for my contact info.

What hobbies or activities for the area?

I’ll be moving to sunset park to be closer to family. I would visit sunset park for food and tech stuff when I lived in Bensonhurst but never knew the area too well outside of late night skewers and getting shitfaced at 100fun.

I’m looking for some things to do in the area that can get me out of the house.

I’m into artsy things, music, and dabble in sports. But also open to suggestions.

Can we get some actual moderation in this sub?

I don’t see the point of reopening this sub from abandonment only to abandon it right afterwards. Close the sub down if no one’s going to moderate it.
