The honest truth about using AI data annotation as a side hustle right now

If you’re looking for a solid way to make extra money on your own schedule, AI data annotation and RLHF training are actually incredibly viable options right now. You’ve probably seen some of the crazy hype on social media promising easy thousands, but the reality is much more grounded. It’s an excellent, high-flexibility gig economy option, but it definitely comes with its own headaches. The biggest selling point is that you can truly log on and work from anywhere at any time, and the baseline pay for general writing and evaluation tasks usually beats out standard food delivery or rideshare apps without putting wear and tear on your car. Plus, you get a front-row seat to how major language models are being shaped behind the scenes, which is pretty cool if you're into tech.

That said, we need to talk about the flip side because the industry can be deeply frustrating if you go into it blind. The main drawback is that the work is entirely task-based and project availability can fluctuate wildly, meaning you might have an amazing week followed by a stretch where you're stuck in an empty queue waiting on a new allocation. The onboarding assessments on platforms like DataAnnotation, Outlier, or Alignerr can take weeks to hear back from, and the communication from corporate support is notoriously slow and opaque. You’re essentially working in a silo, and when project guidelines suddenly change or a project channel disappears overnight, you’re left to figure out the technical changes completely on your own.

You don't need a computer science degree to get started, but you do need a solid level of baseline technical literacy, sharp logical reasoning, and excellent writing skills. Generalist roles usually require you to fact-check statements, write complex prompts, and explain in meticulous detail why one AI response is structurally or factually better than another. If you have a background in areas like coding, mathematics, or legal writing, you can unlock much higher-paying specialized tiers, but even at the entry level, attention to detail is everything. If you’re tired of trying to figure out these platform guidelines by yourself or just want a transparent space to share vetted leads and compare pay rates, hit me up or drop a comment below and I'll send over an invite link to our community Discord so you don't have to navigate the grind alone!

How to Get Accepted on AI Training Platforms (Fast)

Most people don’t get accepted into AI training platforms because they approach it the wrong way.

From my experience, it’s not about being “good enough”.

It’s about how you approach the process.

What worked for me:

  • I did many assessments, even for lower-paying roles
  • I added every small experience to my resume
  • I followed guidelines very carefully (this matters more than people think)
  • I avoided copy-paste completely
  • I applied to bigger platforms too (like Mercor, Micro1), even if they’re harder

The biggest shift was this:

You’re not applying for one job.
You’re building a pipeline.

At any point, I usually have:

  • ongoing applications
  • pending assessments
  • new platforms to try

Over time this leads to:
more access → more projects → more stability

It’s not fast, but it works.

I wrote a short guide here if anyone’s interested:

Different platforms for conversational work!

I wanted to just share a few different platforms with you guys if you are new to the space!

Workbolt

https://workbolt.ai/signup?ref=VDW9EWRC&utm\_source=referral&utm\_medium=share&utm\_campaign=expert\_referral

They just launched and American English project. The pay is 20$ base for voice free speech with an increased pay of 24-28$ during specific time slots ranging for 4-6 hours at different times of the day. Also 40$ for video conversation work base pay currently. They do require a higher quality mic like a Shure mv6 but the project should last atleast a year.

Pila8

https://pila8.com/r/Xcgr7cqoibpfe5qNDPBH

They are very flexible with mic quality and you can use your phone even to do it. They have role play customer and customer service calls that are easy to do and the pays varies from 21$ base up to 29$ an hour depending on your streak and bonus hours and you can do up to 2.8 hours a day on there. I highly recommend this platform. They have a live queue where you can match which is nice.

Yap-room 10$ an hour for free conversation could also use a phone as well. No live queues so need a partner.

Crowtado

12$ an hour kind of glitchy platform and allows you to record for 3 hours only

https://crowtado.com/sign-up?ref=MFP2PNYC

Babel.audio

https://dashboard.babel.audio/sign-up?referrer=MQi1RE5CSeCRlYsyKVUVPA.gq6gnVtm&referrerName=Andrew

Very strict but if you can get on to the 50$ video project you can definitely make good money. They can just be very annoying to deal with and you can get flagged for a lot.

Dip.audio

https://dip.audio/referral/ANDREWVER8V

Pays 20$ for 10 minute conversations but currently paused the project so hopefully they relaunch. One of the best in my opinion not too strict as long as you have a decent dynamic mic you should pass.

DM me if you would like to join a WhatsApp group chat with other contributors to find partners! I hope this helps anyone in their journey!

More Perfect Union just exposed the hidden reality of our industry and why communities like ours matter

Hey everyone, if you haven’t seen it yet, the team over at More Perfect Union just dropped an incredibly important documentary called "I Tracked Down the Hidden Workers Secretly Powering ChatGPT".

Honestly, it is one of the first major investigative pieces to shine a massive spotlight directly on our world. It completely dismantles the Silicon Valley narrative that AI is just a magic tool built purely by tech billionaires and flawless algorithms, and instead exposes the massive global supply chain of human labor that actually keeps these models running.

The Reality of the "Gig" Knowledge Work

For years, tech giants outsourced this data annotation to low-wage countries, but as they push for "PhD-level" models, they have actively pivoted to recruiting highly qualified professionals and recent graduates right here in the US. The video follows workers like "Jen," an Ivy League PhD graduate who turned to AI training out of desperation in a brutal job market. It highlights a haunting reality where tech companies are trying to turn all knowledge work into a hyper-isolated gig economy, buying human expertise on a meter as cheaply as possible. The documentary captures the exact anxiety we talk about here every single day, working like an "anxious rabbit," constantly wondering if your project will vanish tomorrow.

The Cycle of Slashing Wages and Platform Rug Pulls

It details how platforms routinely lure specialized workers in with high rates, sometimes over 100 dollars an hour, only to abruptly end projects, slash wages down to a fraction of the original offer weeks later, or completely ghost workers who try to push back. According to labor researchers featured in the video, a staggering 86% of US data workers struggle to meet financial responsibilities, and many have to rely on public assistance or face housing insecurity.

The Psychological Toll & Missing Guardrails

The video also dives into the darker, hidden sides of platform work through an annotator named "Azie". He explains how workers are routinely forced into tasks they aren't qualified for—like acting as unlicensed mental health counselors for complex prompts—or exposed to deeply traumatizing, graphic, and violent AI-generated content without any psychological support or safety guardrails from the platforms.

Reclaiming Our Collective Leverage

But the most vital part of the video focuses on leverage. Silicon Valley wants us isolated because isolated workers have no power, but tech giants are utterly dependent on our labor. The documentary highlights growing efforts to build collective worker power, pointing to community-led initiatives like Turkopticon and new legislative pushes like the California Sweatshop-Free AI Procurement Act to enforce basic labor standards.

Watching this video makes it incredibly clear why we are building The Evaluator's Guild and r/TalentCollective. We created this space to be a permanent, independent anchor against this exact exploitation—a place where we can share vetted leads, compare notes on platform pay cuts, and ensure that freelance work doesn't mean facing a broken system completely alone.

Check out the full video https://youtu.be/aooiDA-AsNo?is=yuuxznMgcLBNrldX and let’s talk in the comments: how much of Jen or Azie’s experience matches what you’ve dealt with on these platforms? Let's keep building this space together.
