Looking for best school laptop as a film and media major

I’m starting school for film and media late August and am looking for the best laptop, so far Lenovo has appealed to me. At first the ‘IdeaPad 5a 2-in-1 (15" AMD)’ stuck out to me (it’s on sale and for creative reasons the laptop to tablet option really appealed to me) but I’ve seen very mixed reviews. On the other had I’ve seen only good things about the yoga series so the ‘Yoga 7i 2-in-1 Aura
Edition (14" Intel)’ caught my eye, which is unfortunately NOT on sale. I play video games and draw in my free time so that’s a minor factor considering id probably be mostly playing visual novels. Lenovo appeals to me the most because I wanted one when I was younger and seems to have pretty good specs across the board (also they gave me a coupon lol). I am open to other brands tho. TLDR college freshman looking for a laptop with good specs and preferably foldable / 2 in 1. Any and all input is very appreciated!!!

Need help with a refurbished PC crashing Steam games

Hi everyone, I’m hoping someone can help because I’m completely stuck.
I’ve just got a refurbished PC, and I’m trying to play Supermarket Together on Steam. The game launches fine, and I can move around for about 30 seconds at most before it freezes and crashes. Steam then says the game is unresponsive.
So far I’ve tried:
Changing the resolution both in-game and on my PC.
Verifying the game files multiple times.
Restarting my PC several times.
I also have plenty of free storage space, so I don’t think it’s an issue with my drive being full.
I’ve also tried loading up a few other Steam games. They don’t crash, but they’re all really laggy, which makes me think there might be something wrong with my PC rather than just this one game.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this or what I should try next? I’m not very experienced with PCs, so any advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks!

Computer for mom - chromebook? and then how to lock it down

Mom is 78 and I trust her less and less not to click phishing links etc. She's currently using an old Dell Desktop that is dying so I want to get her something new. All she does is email (gmail), surf and shop. She doesn't stream and she really doesn't even need portability.

so 1. What should I get her and 2. what's the best way to lock it down?

phone only charges in my room?

Apologies if this is the wrong sub to use, but i'm genuinely baffled. Plugged my phone in with the cable I always use to my powerbank the other day and I get nothing, so I assume the powerbank is broken. Plug it into a USB-C outlet in the wall and still nothing, so I conclude it must be the cable. Go grab a new cable, try the powerbank and 3 different wall outlets and I'm still getting nothing. By this point I assume my charging port has given out and just go to bed, but the moment I attempt to charge my phone in my room with my normal outlet and normal cable and it suddenly works?? I thought it might have been some kind of temporary issue or coincidence so I brushed it off, but I tried again this evening and once again, the only place it charges is my bedroom? I've never had this issue before and I've used many different cables and outlets to charge my phone, so I'm not sure why on earth it seems to reject anything other than my bedroom outlet all of a sudden? My phone is a Samsung Galaxy A54 if that helps, thanks.

When do smartphone batteries release HF or any other toxic substances?

Hello everyone, I would like to know when I need to worry about smartphone batteries. I heard that they can produce HF as well as perhaps other toxic substances?

As far as I am aware most smartphone batteries are Li-Ion or LiPo batteries, do these batteries only produce HF and other toxic substances when they catch fire or are there other circumstances where they could release toxic substances?

I have noticed with a lot of phones I own, (even brand new ones) there is a faint smell you can smell if you put your nose right near where you open the SIM tray. I am not sure if this is the battery or the adhesive to hold the phone together? The batteries otherwise perform perfectly, they easily last a full day, don't get hot, don't experience random percentage drops, no swelling or any other symptoms.

Should I be worried about the smell or not? How do I know if my batteries are releasing any toxic substances if there are no other symptoms of a bad battery?

I have health anxiety so this is something I struggle with a lot and can't seem to find definitive answers online and I know I shouldn't trust AI answers either so that's why I asked here.

Thank you for any help!

Need a good writing device

I’m looking for a cheap device that’s small (about 11-14” screen) and light so it’s both comfortable and easily portable. I also need it to have a keyboard (either attached or attachable) since digital keyboards aren’t comfortable for long writing sessions. Doesn’t need to run anything more complicated than Google Docs.

How can I transfer my old phone number to my new phone?

Hi reddit,

I just got a new phone with sky mobile yesterday (not yet set up) my current phone is also with sky mobile, but it is a part of my in laws family account (which I pay for) I wanted to wait until my contract was finished to upgrade my phone and create my own sky account, separate from theirs (in my name) which is what I have now done.

However, I am struggling to work out the best way to transfer my number to my new phone and account. I understand I need a pac code to do so but ive also read that you can’t directly transfer it from the same provider and that I need a cheap temp sim to first transfer that on to and then onto the new phone.

Is that correct, and how do I go about this? I am not techy in the slightest. I would also like to know if I can start using my new phone in the meantime before ive transferred over the number? Or will that cause issues?

Thanks 😁

I hate windows with a burning passion please help

So I’m trying to reset this Lenovo laptop to factory settings. Of course, the previous owners didn’t leave any passwords or anything, so I have to do it via RUFUS and all that jazz, unfortunately. I’ve been working on this all day, and I cannot figure out how to get past this. I’m genuinely going to lose my mind. Please help or give any advice

Looking for a school computer with a budget

Sorry if this isn’t the right spot for this! I’ve never posted on Reddit before. I’m enrolling in college this upcoming fall, and was wondering what would be the best laptop for school work, but also to play games on with friends! I have ≈$1,100 saved up, is this enough?

Is it worth it to repair my ThinkPad?

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad L13 Yoga Gen 2 that I've been using for 3.5 years. It's quite battered because I've dropped it a few times (sorry) and it has a tendency to get very hot, but otherwise it works fine.

Previously it ran into battery issues and I replaced the battery with a cheap unofficial one that lasted 2 months before failing again, so this time I sent it to an authorised repair centre.

I was only expecting a battery replacement, but when they finished diagnosing it they said the touchscreen needed to be replaced too because the adhesive was leaking internally. The price they gave for both battery and screen repair was around 445 USD/391 Euros, and around 165 USD/145 Euros for battery replacement alone.

Considering the current value of my laptop, is it worth it to pay that amount of money to repair it? I'd repair only the battery because I'm currently short on money, but I'm worried that the screen adhesive leaking might damage more components down the line.

I do have another computer that I can use for work, but it's 6 years old and quite slow and I'm not sure if I can trust it to last.

NEED ADVICE:Should I trade my i5 11th Gen HP laptop for an Acer Spin 3 with an i3 10th Gen?"Laptop Deal"

Hi guys,

I currently have an HP 250 G8 with an i5 11th Gen, 16GB DDR4 RAM, a 256GB SSD, and integrated graphics. The only real issue with it is the condition of the chassis. One of the corners was broken, but I repaired it with epoxy, repainted the whole bottom shell with spray paint, and added some stickers to hide the damage. Honestly, it turned out much better than I expected.

Someone has offered to trade it for an Acer Spin 3 (I'm not sure about the exact model). It's a 2-in-1 laptop with a built-in stylus, which is really appealing to me. The downside is that it has an i3 10th Gen and only 8GB of DDR4 RAM, which I believe is soldered, so there's no upgrade path. On the other hand, it comes with a 500GB SSD.

I know this seems like an obvious downgrade in terms of performance, but I don't play games or do anything demanding. I mainly use my laptop for school, programming, web browsing, and note-taking.

The biggest issue with my HP is the battery. Its health is around 76%, and I usually only get about 2–3 hours of battery life. That's becoming a real problem because I often study in the library, and I can't always get a seat near a power outlet.

I was already planning to buy a budget tablet in the future (something like a Lenovo Tab M11 or P11) for digital note-taking. If I got the Acer Spin 3, I'd basically have both a laptop and a tablet in one device, so I wouldn't need to buy a separate tablet anymore.

So, what do you guys think?

Would you make the trade, or would you keep the HP and buy a separate tablet later on?

Best phone for music storage?

I'm not a tech savvy person so I figured reddit may be able to help.

TLDR; I have an IPhone 15 that's storage is full because of 4,000+ music files I've downloaded. Is there a phone that can accommodate that? Also considering getting a separate device entirely for music solely.

Currently, I have an IPhone 15 which I use for photos, music, youtube, banking and text/calls. I don't have many apps but my storage is completely full. I have a huge passion for music and have over 4,000+ songs downloaded through Tidal. I currently pay $2.99 a month for ICloud but I want to avoid paying for storage / subscription services if I can. So, I'm wondering if there is a better phone / phone company that may better suit my needs. I also considered maybe I need to buy a separate device entirely solely for music that I can take with me everywhere.
