New TONEX Plug sounds really bad

New to TONEX. Running the app on my iPad and connected to the plug without issue. While the clean amps sound OK, the higher gain amps just sound really bad. I know guitar players like to use expressive language to describe guitar things, so it sounds crispy. Everything just has a unpleasant harshness to it, especially in the upper mid range and higher frequencies. I might even go as far as using the word sizzle, in a bad way.

I’ve adjusted the trim to 0.0, and I’ve tried a pair of Beats on ear headphones as well as an older pair of decent Sony over the ear headphones.

i’m also having trouble with presets not saving changes as well as preset names not saving, but the sound quality is my primary concern at the moment.

Tonex Plug iOS App Buggy

Why is the iOS app of the Tonex Plug so buggy.
At first I only had issues when saving presets. Most of the time, the app didn’t really save the preset, although the saving screen.
Currently the iOS app is completely unusable.
When it starts up, it shows one standard preset, although the shown preset is not what you hear. Changing any settings in the app does not affect the sound. Even the tuner is not showing any response.
In addition, when the battery is empty, the device just shuts down, no warning.

I really like the sound of the Tonex Plug, and for me as a hobby player I love the inconvenience the device promises.. but like this it’s only a frustration.

I had a Positive Grid Spark mini before. The sound was way worse.. but it worked.

This saved my bacon

Wow, bought this on a whim. I have really enjoyed this as a practice tool and for great in mix tones. It’s addictive, I was trying to use this into an amp like a fool and couldn’t get it sounding quite right however I had this on my mini board just in case. Low and behold, I played a gig the other day and there was a mistake on the back line and we were missing an amp, I plugged this straight into a DI box and had the sound guy put this through some floor monitors and there was that epic tone I practice with on stage and it sounded GREAT.

What an amazing tool. Definitely don’t regret the 50grams of weight this adds to my go bag ! Haha game changer .

Very happy with this setup so far

It took me a while to get the cab EQ dialed in, but now I think it sounds pretty great, and honestly, not THAT much different than a traditional guitar cab. I was worried about high gain stuff, but I think it sounds legit.

I built a tool to measure perceived loudness of presets — curious if this is useful to others

I had a problem I suspect many of you know: record a few presets, compare them in a mix, and even with matched LUFS they sit at completely different perceived volumes. A dense crunch pushes harder than a clean tone at the same K-weighted number — the ear isn't a meter.

I spent a few months figuring out why. The short answer: LUFS K-weighting treats all frequencies equally, but the ear doesn't. A dense midrange-heavy tone triggers more loudness perception than the number suggests.

So I built something. It measures perceived loudness using a psychoacoustic Bark-band model — same principle as Zwicker's loudness model — and gives you:

- The exact dB correction to apply to each preset's output to match perceived loudness to a reference

- A timbre-only "Character" score (presence, dynamics, stereo width) separated from volume — tells you if a difference is a gain issue or an EQ issue

- Cut-through score — how well the spectrum sits in a dense mix

- 8-band spectral balance with concrete parametric EQ suggestions

- Loudness curve over time (N50 sustain / N5 peaks)

Workflow: record the same passage through each preset, drop the files in, pick a reference, press Analyze. Runs in the browser, no install.

I'm selling it but happy to answer questions about the model or the approach first. Has anyone else run into this problem and how did you solve it?

new tonex setup - new user questions

Hi all, I am strictly a player at home. I have a few pedals and a few amps I mess around with. I would like to get the Tonex for the Van Halen packs.

I read here a while back that using a Tonex as a pedal with an amp is a less than ideal situation. So, if I want to go stereo, how does this setup look. Will there be any issues with getting good quality sound all the way around?

  1. two new Fender FR10 in stereo

  2. Tonex (full sized version)

and then that should sound good with all of the VH models and then it appears I can hook up all my drive pedals before the tonex and then modulation after the tonex and everything should play nicely together?

Did a quick search and think I found that pedals play nicely with the tonex so I'm hoping if I just pick up a couple of the FR10's for stereo, that will solve all of the issues with using a Tonex with an amp? Do I just pick a nice clean amp model in the Tonex when I want to use my pedals?

In the past, I really just have all pedals go to an amp input.

If I'm going into an FR-10, do I want cabs bypassed on the Tonex?

I have a Tonex and I just ordered an FR-10. I'm a little confused about the settings. Do I want cabs bypassed, or leave them on?

No TONEX Max download with brand new TONEX pedal

Hi everyone. I bought a brand new Tonex amp pedal online last week, along with a Tonex One+ pedal. After registering both products, I received my JamPoints and included app downloads for the One+ model, but never received JamPoints or the Tonex Max app download for my Tonex pedal. I’ve sent multiple support tickets since last week and PM’d them on social media as well after I never got replies to my support tickets. They responded on social media by telling me that to get help, I should open a support ticket (I’d already told them that in my message), and that I don’t get JamPoints for free bundled software (wtf? I never even said that!).

I absolutely love both of these pedals so far, but am feeling kind of let down by their customer support at the moment. I thought I’d try posting here, in the hopes that someone from IK might see my message.

Anyway, sorry to ramble!

What do these do? I am so lost.

I bought a Tonex One to use as a clean pedal platform on my pedalboard. I gigged recently using it with two clean Fender amp patches. Unfortunately it didn’t sound very good. I’m sure some of this is user error. But Tonex does themselves no favors with this software. It’s a nightmare.

I just want to audition some clean amps and put them in the pedal. Maybe a Princeton and a Marshall of some sort.

I don’t want to wade through hundreds of user submitted patches and I don’t need presets with effects. I already have effects.

Currently using some Friedman pedals for dirt, clean boost for leads, a chorus pedal, and an EQD dispatch master for reverb/delay. I’ve tried the Tonex pedal both before and after the time based effects. Not much different really.

Please help. Make it make sense.

Thanks.

Can’t use Tonex app as a standalone on Mac with Scarlett Solo interface

This software is crushing my soul.

Check the pics. I think I have it set up configured correctly.

Logic works, neural works.

No signal is getting to the software as the input meter is not showing anything.

Suggestions?

Tonex one before boss pedals issue

I’d like to raise an issue I’m having with the TONEX One and see if anyone can help me figure it out, because I see a lot of rigs using the TONEX One and I don’t really see anyone talking about this problem.

Originally, my setup was: my drive pedals go into the TONEX One, and from there I go into the return of my Valeton GP-200 to use its modulation, delay, and reverb effects. That rig worked fine, but running the signal through the Valeton seemed to slightly degrade the tone, so I decided to try using analog effects after the TONEX instead.

I first tried placing a Sonicake Levitate (delay + reverb) after the TONEX, and everything was fine. But when I added a Boss Super Chorus, a Boss GE-7, and a typical Boss digital delay after the TONEX, the signal started sounding bad—like clipping, fizzy high-end, or almost like an amp without a cab sim (best way I can describe it).

I’ve tested these pedals with a real amp and they sound completely fine, so it seems like the issue only happens in the interaction between the TONEX One and these Boss pedals.

My suspicion is that the TONEX might be outputting a line-level signal that is too hot for pedals designed for instrument-level input, and for some reason the Sonicake Levitate handles that input level better than the Boss pedals do.

However, I’ve found very little discussion about this, and I’ve also seen multiple rigs with Boss pedals placed after the TONEX without complaints. So either I’m doing something wrong, or there’s some kind of “hidden” solution in those rigs (like a reamp box, attenuator, or buffer) that is matching the signal level before it hits the Boss pedals.

I’ve tried lowering the TONEX output quite a bit, and in that case things start to sound better, but then I have to turn my monitors up a lot just to reach a usable playing volume at home, so I’m not sure if that’s a practical solution.

The input trim on the TONEX One was set correctly—no clipping there—and the sound is generally good both on its own and with my drive pedals in front of it.

Am I missing something here? Does this happen to everyone, or is there some workaround I’m not seeing?

Issue when recording

Ok, new tonex one+ user. After many hours, I’m happy with the sound I’ve got in the tonex software, and (after some further adjustments) happy with the sound I’m getting when plugged directly into PA / FOH. That’s via the canvas LI.

However, when I plug this exact same set up into my focusrite, it sound awful. I’ve made sure I’m set to line, rather than inst, and checked input gain levels. But it just sounds so different, and truly awful.

Any ideas what could be going wrong?
