Why is there so much SHITE in these books?!?

Not in a moral way, in a literal sense. I get the shock value of Renton's wee accident in the run up to the worst toilet scene, but what the hell is going on in skagboys? There's repeated poo contests in that one. I don't get what it's doing for the book, unless I'm meant to map the severity of Renton's addiction onto the dysfunction of his bowels. Am I missing something literary? Am I just lost because I've never been a uni-aged boy? What's going on.

How didn't Tommy know?

Renton asks to borrow "100 Greatest Goals", Tommy says yes. When he and Lizzy copulate, they watch their video. However, the video that comes on is not their sex tape, but "100 Greatest Goals". We know that's the video, as we saw Rention swapping those tapes around and the footage that comes on the TV in front of Tommy very much looks and sounds like something from "100 Greatest Goals".

Now, if you were Tommy, would your immediate thought not be Renton? He asked to borrow that video, and when you put on your sex tape, that's the video that comes on instead... Seems very suspect. I don't feel like it's something that Renton could just casually shake off either. If Tommy actually quizzed him I think it would get obvious quick, especially if he asked Renton to give him back the tape he borrowed.

Is this not a plothole? Am I missing something?

I love the ambiguity of Trainspotting 1’s ending.

I love how the movie ends with Mark Renton leaving with the bag of cash. In my mind, you never knew if Renton was gonna go straight or spend it on smack. As a young alcoholic I’ve always seen Mark Renton as a person who would eventually relapse on heroin(because that’s what I would do). The ending is less freedom and more doom and despair as he descends into his life as a heroine junkie.what do you think?

Everyman Cinema In Edinburgh

Went there for the first time yesterday and noticed this. Quite fitting as it’s in the vicinity of where Renton gets hit by the car at the start of the if the film.

Question for the one other person in here who's seen the musical

(I saw you posting, you can't hide from me)

Are we meant to assume that a certain Rent Boy got that nickname for a reason, in this take on the plot? I know it's just to take the mick in the original, but there's a couple new lines in this one that did make me wonder. Specifically, Franco screaming that he's gonnae "kill that fucking rent boy" and this whole exchange:

SB: we're famous for heroin, alcoholism, and violence.
Spud: And prostitution! [turns to alison] Sorry Ali, I don't mean to be sexist, eh. Not that lads can't be rent boys, eh. [turns to renton]- sorry Mark, I was no gettin' at you-
Renton: WE GET THE PICTURE, MATE.

It's not in the book/film, but every adaptation has had tweaks here and there, and it's not like it's out of line with the tone. Awful twist of the knife for Tommy, too. What do we think?
