I can't have a firearm right now, but I need to protect myself...

I apologize if this post isn't appropriate for the sub - I will quickly remove it if that's the case

The problem is that my parents don't want any firearms in the house - I'm 18 and I still live with them, and I doubt that's changing anytime soon (fuck this economy).

I really need something to defend myself with. I'm a non-passing trans woman in Texas, and I feel like I might be pushing my luck if I go for another 1-2 years without anything to keep my safe.

The Byrna pepper guns are $500, and I'm not willing to spend that amount on a newly released product that may or may not work as advertised.

I doubt putting metal BBs into my airsoft CZ would actually be viable in a self defense scenario. At best it's a face plinker?

I certainly do not trust myself to win in a melee fight, so knives aren't an option.

I'm pretty sure tasers are legal here, but studies/surveys from Law Enforcement have shown that they are unreliable up to 40% of the time.

Is pepper spray actually that effective? Or is it just the thing Northeast Liberals point to as an "effective alternative to firearms"?

I guess I just feel stuck right now? I don't really know what my options are. I'd love to hear y'all's ideas, or your counterpoints/opinions for the things I listed above if you believe any of them are actually valid options/I was wrong to dismiss them.

edit: just landed from a flight now, and working on getting to the hotel. I'll check out everything y'all have to say when I get the chance to reply to comments. thx for all the support y'all ❤️

Can anyone ID this trigger?

Bought this Glock 17 Gen 6 used. It came with the original OEM trigger separately, but this aftermarket trigger was already installed.

I have no idea what brand/model it is, or whether it's just an aftermarket trigger shoe or a complete trigger assembly.

I've already put rounds through the gun and it has functioned reliably with no issues. I'm mainly just curious if anyone recognizes the trigger.

Any ideas?

Who else enjoys modding their s*** until it's unrecognizable? 😵‍💫

- Glock 40 (10mm)

- M&P 2.0 5" (.40s&w)

- XD Mod.2 (.45acp)

It's not for everybody, but I certainly enjoy them.

Mini-14 Repair Complete: Cracked buffer, worn recoil spring, installation of buffer cushion (Photos of service)

For those that saw it last week or so, I discovered a maintenance issue with my Mini-14 Rifle: a cracked recoil buffer. I was offered some excellent, highly useful advice from folks here, and decided to attempt maintenance myself.

I ordered a spare fresh recoil spring, two spare buffer retention pins, and two spare buffers. I also ordered a 6 pack of rubber 1911 buffer cushions, as I learned that they will fit the Mini-14 operating system to further reduce wear on the buffer.

I immediately realized comparing the fresh recoil spring to the old one that this, too would need replaced. For in addition to a cracked buffer, I found that the recoil spring had been overcompressed from normal wear over the past 25 years of this rifle’s life.

This means that the problem was, in actuality, two-fold…the overcompressed recoil spring caused excess additional force to be exerted on the buffer, the buffer then sustained this for a few thousand rounds and eventually gave way, cracking in two to save the receiver.

This caused a “controlled failure,” which thankfully was easily found and maintained by routine repair and parts maintenance. Despite this failure, the rifle continued to shoot 60 rounds without failure nor issue the day I used her last. That is a positive testament to the design of this rifle, and it did impress me.

Sequential repair sequence of photos, from disassembly to installation of buffer, buffer recoil cushion and etc are attached here for those wishing to see the process from an armorer’s perspective.

The photos aren’t perfect; I was using my phone with one hand, maintaining tension on some parts as I went. Apologies for that.

Please feel free to ask questions if you feel I can help educate on the process!

The work was very easy to do; if you can field strip your rifle, you can commit this repair if you ever need it.

Thank you to everyone who offered me morale support, resources and education to assist with this. It means a lot to me personally that this community has such helpful people.

Never felt so vulnerable

So last night, I accidently locked my door key in my car. Long story short, I have one key for the doors, and one for ignition. I kept my door key in my wallet for an event, and locked my ignition key in the glove box. After said event, I went to the store, which is located in a less than ideal place. Get out, lock and close the door, and immediately realize my door key is in the cup holder..... Awesome! I am all done up, skirt, blouse, makeup, the nines. Now locked out of my car defenseless. I usually keep my Ruger LCP in my bag, but where's the bag? IN THE CAR!!! luckily I had my phone, so I called my friend and he was able to come help me out, as I keep a spare set of all my keys in my work locker, which happens to be closer than home.

Needless to say though, I think I'll be ordering a garter holster or something of that nature. The cat calls, weird looks, and just general uneasiness pf being a woman in todays world scared the crap out me. This is my first time experiencing this, and I've read other people's experiences, but to finally have that lived experience is a whole new level of understanding.

TLDR locked my key in my car in a bad neighborhood, without any protection, but luckily a friend bailed me out.

Am I the only one that carries a pocket pistol every day?

It’s a bond arms, rough neck, in 9 mm. I’m kind of disappointed in the finish on it. It’s got a lot of surface rust. I guess I need to spend some time cleaning it.

Obligatory Gear-Do Pics w/ Cat

I love my cat. :3

Anyway, I recently picked up a Pelican Air 1615 and I was able to pack my full kit. Body armor with plates, battle belt w/ pistol, helmet w/ NVG,, 3 day assault pack, and a rifle. It's a tight fit but it works. :D
