Toting your stuff

What do you guys use to carry all your stuff? I have two 10-inch speakers, a mixer, mic, two speaker stands, desktop mic stand, all associated cords, laptop, charger, expanding folder with answer sheets/worksheets/sign up links, a box of pens, a flashlight, scissors, a folding desk lamp, a surge protector, tip jar, little tray for answer sheets, electric and duct tape........ I think that's it lol. I have been cramming everything that will fit in a laptop messenger type bag and just making several trips, but I would love to hear any clever solutions you have. Thanks!!

Question Swap details have been sent!

A little later than I planned originally, but thanks to everyone who took part in the question swap. The compiled list has been sent out with a couple of notes.

If you were expecting the questions but didn't get them, please check your recent emails as there were a couple of people I messaged about issues with submissions. If I get updated lists from these people, I will get them added and send out an updated version of the question swap to all.

It was more time consuming than I though and definitely more effort. I will give it a little time and consideration before the next one and will look to improve the process too. I will let you know when question swap 2 is coming up though!

A big thank you to everyone who took part!

World Cup of Trivia Round

Here is a round I did on a World Cup theme, but which is not really about the world cup (except the last question). Players have to identify the countries by the flags, then are asked trivia questions about them (questions also have clues to help identify the countries). I had 11 teams, and all got 10 or more out of 15. Could easily be adapted with different countries and easier/harder questions.

Here are the questions:
#1-8 - identify the countries by their flag

  1. >!Canada!<

  2. >!South Africa!<

  3. >!the Netherlands!<

  4. >!Sweden!<

  5. >!Ghana!<

  6. >!Colombia!<

  7. >!Australia!<

  8. >!Curacao!<

  9. Answer will be either country 1 or country 2. Both of these countries have diamond mining industries. In 2024, which country’s diamond mines produced fewer diamonds by weight? >!South Africa produced fewer diamonds – only about 5 million carats, compared to Canada’s 13 million carats!<

  10. These are both countries that have a lot of tall people. But which country’s citizens are, on average, the tallest in the world? >!Netherlands!<

  11. Both countries have citizens who have won the Nobel Peace Prize. Their names are Juan Manuel Santos Calderón and Kofi Annan. Which country’s Nobel laureate won in 2001 for his work as secretary-general of the United Nations? >!Ghana (Kofi Annan)!<

  12. Which of these countries is NOT the world’s leading producer of opals? That’s opals like the iridescent gem, not the car. >!Curacao!<

  13. These two countries have some linguistic overlap. An official language in one country is mostly made up of vocabulary from the other country’s main language. Also, in both countries, English is widely spoken, but it is only an official language in one of them. Which of these countries does NOT have English as one of their official languages? >!The Netherlands – almost everyone speaks it to some degree, but it’s not official. But it is one of the 12 official languages of S. Africa!<

  14. Which country produces a bitter-orange-flavoured liqueur that is a main ingredient in the cocktails Blue Lagoon, Blue Hawaii and Aqua Velva? >!Curacao (the liqueur is also called Curacao)!<

  15. World Cup question. Which of these countries’ world cup team has only one player that was actually born in that country? >!Curacao, (the rest are from the Netherlands)!<

Dealing with cheating?

I have hosted trivia for the past few years and have dealt with a fair few cheaters, but none of them have caused any trouble past me giving them a nudge ‘cmon man it’s trivia’ or public humiliation if it gets bad, but I just started at a new place and it’s getting pretty bad

I recently started at another location of the bar chain I’ve been hosting at for the past year, and only one patron has been attending both venues. This guy is blatantly looking up answers, and not even doing a good job at hiding it (putting exact decimal points on metric/imperial conversion rounds). I nudged him personally and also gave the team an indirect shoutout about cheating and a 0 in that round, but the behavior continued.

Since I’m just starting up at this venue I’m a little nervous about a direct confrontation. We only have around 3 teams now, including the bartender, so I don’t wanna actively scare away patrons, but this is getting a bit much. Any advice?

Great American Music Road Trip

I ran a particularly successful audio round during my last session, called the Great American Music Road Trip, and I wanted to share it with my fellow hosts.

10 questions. For each question I played a song by two different musical artists, both of whom are from and/or are strongly associated with a US city.

These are the ones I used:

Dropkick Murphys, Pixies - Boston

Smashing Pumpkins, Muddy Waters - Chicago

Prince, The Replacements - Minneapolis

Jimi Hendrix, Pearl Jam - Seattle

Imagine Dragons, The Killers- Las Vegas

Ice Cube, Red Hot Chili Peppers - Los Angeles

Louis Armstrong, Dr. John - New Orleans

Taylor Swift, King of Leon - Nashville

Pitbull, Gloria Estefan - Miami

Devo, The Pretenders (Chrissie Hynde) - Akron, OH

But! Here is the fun part. I also gave out a blank US map and asked the teams to map each city and then "connect-the-dots" in order, and finish by drawing a a circle around the Great Salt Lake. If they got all the cities in the right place, it makes the shape of a shark/fish. So -- the bonus question answer was the shape of the connect-the-dots ("fish" or "shark").

This round was a big hit (pun intended). I'm always looking for audio rounds that are not just "name that tune", so if you have any fun audio rounds please post them here!
