Blemmyes - Greco-Roman Mythology

The Blemmyes were a legendary race of headless people known from Greco-Roman accounts of distant lands and later from medieval European tradition. They were described as having human bodies, but with their eyes and mouths set directly into their chests. Ancient writers placed them in little-known regions of Africa, including Libya and lands then referred to as Ethiopia. The Roman author Pliny the Elder mentioned them in his Natural History, while medieval manuscripts, travel accounts, and world maps continued to depict these strange beings.

William Shakespeare also referred to headless people in Othello and The Tempest, where characters mention men whose heads appear below their shoulders or in their chests. The name Blemmyes was also used for a real people who lived between the Nile and the Red Sea, whose history should be distinguished from the legends about their unusual anatomy.
