PSC Miscellaneous Exam: Lessons for Current & Future Aspirants

Speaking from my own experience of scoring 130+ marks in both WBCS Prelims 2023 and 2024, here is what I would tell current and future aspirants in Bengal.

Before the PSC Miscellaneous exam, YouTube was filled with videos motivating to score 75 out of 75 in GS. These videos may look impressive, but aspirants need to understand the reality behind them.

New students often don't know where to focus their preparation. They see these videos, assuming that scoring full marks is the only way to get selected, and end up wasting valuable time chasing unrealistic targets.

YouTube is full of content, but not all content comes from people with actual exam experience.

Take WBCS Prelims 2024 as an example. Videos claiming to get you 50 out of 50 in History were circulating widely before the prelims. But anyone with experience of the examination knows that, before 2023, scoring around 45/50 in History was possible. After the pattern and difficulty changes, even 40/50 is very good score.

And this is where aspirants need to understand the difference between subjects.

Polity is probably the one subject where, with very strong preparation full marks can be scored.

But subjects such as History and Science are different. Their syllabus is extremely broad, and questions can come from areas that are difficult to predict or cover exhaustively. Expecting 50/50 in History or 25/25 in Science is therefore an unrealistic benchmark for most aspirants.

Yet the constant obsession with full marks creates the wrong mindset

If I don't score 50/50, I won't get selected.

That is simply not how competitive exams work.

The commission has prescribed a syllabus for a reason. Every subject will contain a mix of basic, moderate and difficult questions. Your first objective should be to capture the low-hanging fruits — the questions you are expected to get right with proper preparation.

75% preparation across all subjects is far better than 100% preparation of just one subject.

There is little benefit in knowing one subject inside out if you leave large portions of the syllabus untouched. A well-balanced preparation gives you the ability to pick up marks across the entire paper.

And this becomes even more important for WBCS 2025.

Don't prepare with the mindset of getting 100% in every subject.

Don't chase somebody else's 50/50 screenshot. Build a preparation that allows you to collect marks from the entire paper.
