Honours and death anniversaries of Indira Gandhi's assassins

Satwant Singh

Surinder Kaur (daughter of Virsa Singh) wed Satwant Singh in absentia by "marrying" his photo in an Anand Karaj on 2 May 1988 while he was in prison.

In the aftermath of the executions of former prime minister Indira Gandhi's assassins Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh, communal violence occurred in Punjab, resulting in 14 Hindus being killed by militants.

In 2003, a Bhog ceremony was held at the highest Sikh temporal seat in Akal Takht Sahib, located in the Golden Temple Complex in Amritsar, where tributes were paid to Mrs. Gandhi's assassins.

In 2004, his death anniversary was observed at Akal Takht where his mother was honored by Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC), the Sikh-centric political party Shiromani Akali Dal and head priest and tributes were paid to Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh by various political parties.

In 2007, the death anniversaries of Satwant Singh and his wife were observed in various parts of Punjab and other countries.

On 6 January 2008, Akal Takht declared Kehar Singh and other assassins of Indira Gandhi as martyrs of Sikhism. SGPC also paid homage to both Satwant Singh and Kehar Singh and called them "Martyrs of Sikh Nation".

Shiromani Akali Dal observed the death anniversary of Beant Singh and Satwant Singh as "Martyrdom Day" for the first time on 31 October 2008.

Since then, their 'Martyrdom Day' has been observed annually at the Akal Takht on this date.

A film named Kaum de Heere in Punjabi was made about them in 2014.

On 29 August 2019, the Delhi High Court allowed the theatrical release of the film which had earlier been banned by the Central Board of Film Certification from public screening.

Beant Singh

Beant Singh's widow, Bimal Kaur Khalsa, initially joined a Sikh militant group and was later imprisoned. She was subsequently elected as a member of the Lok Sabha from the Ropar constituency.

His father, Baba Sucha Singh, was also elected to the Lok Sabha from Bathinda.

His son, Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, was elected to the Lok Sabha from Faridkot in 2024.
