UO custom content question

I have a strange question, I was curious how does custom content work on UO shards exactly? I see that a lot of shards I've looked at throughout the years have had the same custom content like skill balls and other things like that, so I was curious if there was some set of UO "mods" somewhere that server admins look through when setting up a server or how it works exactly.

I didn't play much on the official shards since I'm just a tad out of the age range to have been around for the height of it but I played a lot of custom shards, some with really unique and strange content like Current Online World(COW) and Crow's Kingdom, and then also a number of shards that share the same pool of custom content.

Orcs & Humans

A Orc race has been added and you can now choose between Orcs and Humans. Orcs live in poverty and are angry with the humans who live lavish lifestyles. When a human enters an Orc town they are mocked and refused services. A small character race bonus of extra damage has been given to orcs and humans being more nimble have a slight swing speed increase applied.

Where do I belong?

I've been chasing the UO dragon for over 20 years now. Can't find a private/custom server that keeps me coming back.

Is 10-20 people all we can hope for in a non-Outlands server? That feels so empty, and even worse when you're constantly running into chars that are just afk macroing. That's what threw me off of UOR. This is my biggest lack in the servers I've tried, and easily the biggest hurdle for any server to overcome, I imagine.

The virtual lack of non-consensual PvP robs all excitement from me. I want to chase and be chased.

I haven't found any servers where the new/custom content is focused on bringing players together in order to foster emergent scenarios or motivations. Seems like it's all endgame PvM or crafting. The problem with that is it doesn't add any friction between players/groups of players. It encourages solo play or group play where everyone involved has a common goal and the only friction is against the game itself, instead of other players.

Speaking of friction, the stripping thereof seems to be a consistent throughline and the biggest drawback for me. GM'ing chars takes too long; remove friction by afk macroing. Farming dungeons is too tedious, time consuming or risky; remove friction by adding gates on every dungeon level. Remove friction by adding instances.

They all feel like solo/coop rpgs without the benefit of an engaging narrative throughout.

This is a bit of a ramble. Disagree with me to help me get some clarity on my thoughts about these and other issues of trying to enjoy UO in present day. I want the magic back.

“Little project I’ve been building:

Little project I’ve been building: a custom game client/server and engine, along with OrB Landscaper & OrB Architect. My old core team 20 years ago and I made UO Architect & UO Landscaper.

These shots show the current OrB Engine client from OrBSydia.com. The engine can load existing UO data as read-only for testing, while the larger goal is to build a completely new game. I’m taking a stab at building my original vision of these systems from 20 years ago.

I have full 8-way movement, WASD/arrow keys, with the mouse free to do whatever, hotbar switching with the mouse wheel, full zoom outside of the hotbar, and controller support.

This isn’t a UO emulator; it’s more of a full game client/system sandbox I’ve been building. My tools don’t edit UO data, but instead make use of OrB-data for building custom systems and adding art, etc. later.

This is very much a work in progress. It’s purely for fun. Figured I’d share the WIP. This nod to a game that very loved for decades.

I haven’t set a release date or anything; it’s just been fun to build again. I’ve been building it from the ground up, not using existing source from the emu community, although I’ve put together full credits and info for references, etc.

I built an automated Cargo Ship & Naval Trading system for our Ultima Online server! What do you think? ⛵📦

Greetings adventurers of Hopelands! 🌊⚔️

We have built a fully custom Sea Cargo & Maritime Trading System for New Hope UO, introducing a dynamic naval economy and seafaring merchant life to the brand-new world of Hopelands!

Here is a look at how the system works:

🚢 Key Features:

  • Major Port Cities of Hopelands: Pick up high-value trade contracts and transport goods between custom harbors including Valdris, Stonemark, Ashford, and Aethermoor.
  • Ship Capacity Multipliers: Profits and capacity scale with your ship type, from small Rowboats (0.5x) up to massive High Seas Galleons (2.5x capacity and rewards).
  • 20-Level Merchant Progression: Level up your Captain rank to unlock up to 20% trade discounts and major milestone progression rewards.
  • Smooth Autopilot & Waypoint Navigation: Advanced automated navigation system that bypasses sea-monster collisions and cruises smoothly at max boat speed.
  • Dynamic Harbor Deliveries: Dock at your destination pier to deliver goods directly to the Cargo Master NPC and collect your earnings.

🏴‍☠️ Beware of Pirates & High Seas Danger: Keep your cannons loaded and your eyes on the horizon! The waters of Hopelands are not always calm, and you never know when bloodthirsty pirates or rival sailors might intercept your trade route!

Whether you want to build a trading empire or sail the open seas as a daring merchant captain, your journey begins now!

Two weeks of bug reports on UO Mobile Classic — all 20, and what happened to each

TLDR: 20 bug reports in two weeks from 13 of you. 19 fixed. v1.0.56 is live on iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows and Linux. Here's the full list, including the one I still can't work out.

Two weeks ago I posted that iOS/Mac/Android were live and asked people to use the in-game bug report tool. You did. Rather than a changelog, THANK YOU! Here's every report and exactly where it stands.

Already live (v1.0.56, all platforms)

- The vendor Sell button opened the Buy window. NoxSoldier reported this seven times before I got to it. Sorry, and thanks for not giving up.

- Skills could reset to starting values. There was a path that wrote a save with no skill data at all, wiping your progression on the next load. Found it and closed it. (Zym, this one genuinely cost you.)

- Items in a monster's corpse were never consumed, so they could be used forever and dragging one afterwards crashed the game.

- Running was ~67% faster than it should have been, which is also why the legs skated. (Skiter)

- Dragging a skill out to make a shortcut only worked if you released within a few pixels of the window edge. (Zi) - A castle you couldn't get into, all four archways were solid. (quirt)

- The bug reporter could trap you with no way out. On phones and tablets there was no escape at all. That one was squarely my fault, in the very tool I'm asking you to use. (Adventurer)

- 4K and Linux: the game opened in a small fixed window with no way to zoom. It now sizes to your screen. (Brynn)

- The tutorial couldn't be finished on some Android devices. (Lourdes)

- Skill trainers: the Train button did nothing. You could pick a skill and see the price, but tapping Train never trained you, the button was drawn just outside its own window, so taps were thrown away before they reached it. (Kendra, who had to report it twice.)

- "Connected to:" showing a blank name after reconnecting. Looked like the connection had dropped when it was fine. (Toda)

Fixed this week, in the next build

- Getting permanently stuck in terrain. One player ended up standing on the sea floor, walled in by a 30-unit cliff on every side. He couldn't have walked in and couldn't walk out — and since your position is saved, relogging didn't help either. That character was just gone. The game now spots when you're genuinely walled in and moves you somewhere safe, including characters that are already stuck. (Tommy Phantom, who reported it three times in six minutes.)

- Skill buttons "bugging on and off". A skill card only counted as a tap if your finger moved less than 8 pixels, on a card smaller than a fingertip. Most taps registered as drags, so the card shifted slightly and the skill never fired. That's also why cards wandered into odd corners of the screen.

Still open — one

- A "stuck on tower" report I can't explain. I pulled the map data for that exact spot and every direction is walkable stone. If that was you or it happens again, any extra detail helps. (Grimm Ravenclaw)

Nearly every fix above exists because someone stopped playing for a minute to file a report. Quick Commands → Report Bug attaches a screenshot and your location automatically. THANK YOU!

https://runawayideas.net/uoclassic

Thank you all for the support. i hope you are enjoying the offline Mobile version

Anyone interested in super-early-pre-alpha testing a Unity remake?

I am looking for anyone with some UO knowledge to help find bugs, quirks, and UX or game mechanic improvement suggestions for this Unity remake project. This project is still currently in very early stages, but is functional today and currently running on a dedicated server. Like all other emulators or free shards out there, it requires that clients have an installation of the classic UO client from https://uo.com/client-download/ for the data files (i.e. map) that this project uses for now. Let me know if any of you are interested in helping out with any amount of testing/qa type stuff via Discord for download link + setup instructions: https://discord.gg/SkxPKzZB (this link expires in 1 week or after 25 users). The test group will stay small at this stage because of how early into development this is, but I may increase numbers as things get smoothed out and if interest is there.

But why Unity?
I'm familiar with the engine and it allows for much easier modernization of various features compared to other custom server/clients out there, at least in my opinion. One random example - the spellbook below throws up a convenient tooltip on hover with a keybind mapping button next to each spell (note: this is far from having gone through any polish stages and is still very "rough draft").

That said - tons of respect and appreciation to all the developers out there that took any part in UOX, ServUO, RunUO, ClassicUO, or any of the others out there. Those resources are invaluable and help immensely with these kind of hobby projects.

And for transparency, though irrelevant IMO and TBH should be expected at this point, yes - AI is used in the development process.

Last but not least, this is a side project. I have a full time job in IT, so this won't be production ready "by the end of the week". Just a casual hobby/side project for my inner nerd and for the nostalgia feels.

Thanks for reading!

Does anyone know if these are the same person? (GM Darwin nostalgia trip)

Found this possible connection while rabbit holing old UO memories and was wondering if anyone knew more.

If you don't recognize the name, Darwin was a GM who was caught duping millions of gold, castle deeds, placing keeps on unbuildable land, etc., and selling it all on eBay. This was in the wild west early days of MMOs as well as online marketplaces.

https://www.nytimes.com/1999/07/08/technology/news-watch-video-game-worker-dismissed-for-selling-fantasy-real-estate.html

Then this came up. Same name, same middle initial, age lines up, also in Texas.

Oberin Old School MMORPG

I wanted to share an MMORPG that I recently discovered called Oberin, because I think it deserves more attention.

The graphics are definitely dated, and I know that alone will turn some people away. But underneath the old-school visuals is a surprisingly deep game with a really great community.

What stood out to me:

- The community is incredibly welcoming and active.

- The game has a strong RP element if that's something you're interested in.

- The GMs are very active and involved with the community.

- The developers are still actively updating and improving the game.

It has that old-school MMORPG feeling where the community itself is a big part of the experience.

It's definitely not going to be everyone's cup of tea, especially if you're looking for modern graphics or a heavily polished AAA-style MMO. But if you enjoy old-school MMORPGs and don't mind the visuals, I think it's absolutely worth giving it a shot.

I'm not affiliated with the game or trying to advertise anything. I just figured there may be some MMORPG fans here who have never heard of it and might enjoy checking it out.
