Finished UTOT and Questions
After four years I finally finished Under the Oak Tree !!
When I first started reading it, I could only read Book 1 because the rest wasn’t translated yet, and Book 2 was on hiatus. So I had to wait until it was officially translated and until I had time to continue. And wow… I love this book so, so much.
In my opinion, Book 1 and Book 2 are really different, so I don’t really want to compare them. Book 1 felt much more focused on Maxi and Riftan, their relationship, Maxi’s growth, the castle and discovering their world. Book 2 became so much bigger with all the politics, traveling and especially the war. And speaking of the war… there was A LOT of it 😭 At the end I was honestly like, okay, we get ittt, can we please have some more Riftan and Maxi now?…even though the plot was really good. I also have to admit that I found Maxi a little annoying in some scenes in Book 2. I still love her, but there were definitely moments where she frustrated me. The side characters were of course one of the the best things in the books like Kuahel Leon, Sejleu Aren and I also grew alot to Gabel toward of the End of book 2. Rosetta‘s chat with Maxi was really emotional in my opinion. Riftan‘s Oath to Maxi was sooo cute🥹My biggest disappointment, though, was how little we got to see Maxi and Riftan together during the last like 20 chapters. It was even said they didn’t really see each other much, but not to have a little more scenes with them? After following their relationship for so long, I really wanted more of them towards the end. And then the LAST CHAPTER is basically Sidina and Anette dancing with Maxi😭 and so little of Riftan. I actually thought it was okay that they didn’t have children yet, but I would’ve really liked it if they had talked about it again, especially because of the trauma they both went through with the miscarriage.
That being said, I still really liked the ending, and I’m so happy that we’re still (hopefully) getting an epilogue. I feel like there are still some things left unsaid, so I’m really looking forward to it. And if we get something like her being pregnant or them finally talking about having children, I’d honestly be really happy, just so we know what their future might look like.
Overall, I absolutely loved this story.🥰
I still have some Questions:
• Toward the end, Riftan was often referred to as King Reuben’s “lapdog.” Of course, I understand that he had to be obedient to some extent because of the political situation and the time period, but the Riftan I always had in mind was someone who did pretty much whatever he wanted. He even said something along the lines of, “When was I ever disobedient?” So was he actually this obedient all these years? And was it partly because of the armistice and his desire to protect Maxi?
• Could someone tell me which chapter/page the magic system is explained in? I’d like to reread that part because I still don’t fully understand how everything works.
