Hey everyone,
I’m completely new to the watch world. Honestly, the only thing I’ve ever worn on my wrist is an Apple Watch, but I have a trip to Japan coming up soon and want to use the opportunity to dive headfirst into proper Japanese horology. My goal is to bring back a solid 5 to 7 watch collection straight from the source.
I’ve been doing some research and put together a shortlist of watches I plan to track down while I'm there. Budget isn't really an issue for this starting lineup, so I can buy all of these at once. But since I'm a beginner, I want to see if the community has better suggestions. If you think a specific watch here is redundant or if there's a legendary JDM (Japan Domestic Market) model I should swap in instead, please let me know!
Here is my current shopping list:
The Rugged/Divers:
Citizen Promaster Marine Diver (BN0151-17L) — Blue dial, Eco-Drive
Citizen Promaster Marine Series (BN0190) — Gold accents, Eco-Drive
Seiko 5 Sports SKX Series — Pepsi (Blue/Red) Bezel, Automatic
The Dressier/Mechanical Picks:
4. Orient Star Semi-Skeleton (RK-AT0004S) — White dial open-heart
5. Orient Bambino Sun & Moon — Vintage Ivory dial
Everyday Steel Braces:
6. Citizen Collection Eco-Drive (BM7620) — Silver/Gold dual tone
7. Citizen Collection Eco-Drive (BM7620) — Clean black dial.
A few questions for the sub:
Do you see any major overlaps here? I'm wondering if I should drop one or two of the Citizen Eco-Drives so the collection doesn't feel too crowded with similar styles.
Also, since I will physically be in Tokyo and Osaka, are there any Japan-exclusive models like specific Seiko Alpinist variants, the Casio Oceanus line, or unique Orient Stars that I should look for instead of these standard models?
Lastly, should I swap one of these out for an entry-level Swiss piece like a Tissot PRX or a Hamilton Khaki Field, or should I just stick to pure Japanese craftsmanship for this specific trip?
Any advice on cool watch boutiques to visit in Tokyo, or general swap suggestions to make this a well-rounded collection would be awesome.
Thanks in advance!
I bought this watch purely out of FOMO. Everyone was hyping it up and I caved. When it arrived, I was honestly disappointed - it just didn’t click.
Wore it for a few days anyway…and slowly it started growing on me. The unique industrial design, the light weight nature, the compliments it got - it's a conversation starter. A few weeks later I actually caught myself loving it.
And soon after that I decided to scout another piece from a fellow watch enthusiast. I now intend to use the second piece as a bag / keyfob carry. Hope the titanium build hold up to the daily beating (worried about the Schott glass tho, but it's worth a shot).
This beauty just arrived today.
Such a difficult watch to take a picture of!
Also I’m thinking of getting an extra leather bracelet for it
I recently bought the Seiko SBPX157 which is a solar watch with full lume dial and is also a JDM model from Amazon Japan. I paid customs duty to the India Post directly at the time of delivery.
Now one may ask why would I buy a solar watch with a simple dial for a prive above the MRP (due to customs duty). But something about the simple nature of the watch appeals to me.
Please let me know in case you have any questions about the watch or on the process of buying from Amazon Japan
Grabbed this babboi around 9k offer price and like its a show stealing piece and it looks more elegant in real.✨️
Guys cmnt ur opinions on this😌
It started off a few years ago when I heard that HMT is winding down its business. Couldn't bear to think that such a rich heritage would be lost. Ever since, it's been getting ripped off by resellers, learning bargaining, scouring the HMT website for those elusive watches, and in time, learning to know what makes for a good collection (and sometimes just picking one up because it looks so good :D)
This isn't a flex as the flair may seem to suggest, it's just taking pride in something that has a bit of nostalgia, madness, and a deep appreciation for the simpler 'times'
Will be happy to know more about these watches and any trivia about HMT.
What do you think I should add to this? What's your favorite of the lot?
Meet the family
Long time Apple watch user (almost 8years), recently joined few subs of watch over Reddit & immediately fallen for the beautiful timepieces people rock on their wrists.
Recent bought this beauty in green colour, need more suggestions so i can start building my collection
Picked this up yesterday for 37k and I genuinely get the Cocktail Time hype now. The dial looks completely different every time light hits it.
How’d I do on the price?
