Size differences are wild for 14U!

My son who will turn 14 next month is on the slower end of growth. His voice just changed last summer and is just above 5’3”. He is getting stronger and I see a huge difference between his noodle-y stature from last summer to now I see visible shoulder/back/chest development but is still one of the smaller players among his teammates. Most are much taller than him but still they seem like a similar age group and they all get along so well. His size isn’t a concern or anything but we played against some crazy undefeated team. I thought some of those players were assistant coaches or something. One player had a full on goatee and I counted at least 4 who are at least 6’ with huge chest and back muscles and hairy legs like my husband’s 😂. They look like they can be my son’s guardians basically. Final score was something like 18-3.

Overall my son’s team did great with other games and qualified for Jr Olympics so I’m not worried about them at all, just am still in shock from this weekend.

Honest thoughts on the 25-meter pool length transition? Are we losing the strategic value of the counter-attack?

We saw the 25-meter format fully utilized at the Men's European Championships in Belgrade earlier this year, and it's been trickling down into discussion for upcoming local and masters leagues. Personally, I'm torn.On one hand, it definitely forces a higher scoring volume and makes the game punchier for casual spectators. On the other hand, as a driver, it feels like the art of a true, grinding counter-attack is being suffocated. In a 25m setup, the transition happens so fast that half the time it just looks like a chaotic scrum rather than an organized fast break. It rewards pure size and explosive bursts over deep endurance and spatial setup. For those of you who have played competitive matches on both lengths recently, how much did it change your team's tactical approach? Are coaches completely abandoning the traditional drop defense because the recovery distance is shorter?

Is waterpolo a rich man's sport like golf?

I swear, this game is a rich man's sport. Tell me why I never see people from poor backgrounds play it? Other sports like football, soccer, basketball, etc are for everyone. You'll find a kid from the worst of places playing these other sports and thriving.

Tell me where a poor kid will find a swimming pool and a regular trainer in waterpolo so they could be professional players. The worst part, you have to learn how to swim first, then learn how to play.

For a sport like soccer/football, all a kid needs is a ball to his feet, he could be barefoot and dead poor and still play with the ball since it won't cost much.

my first black eye from water polo

man I got my first shiner last week. Elbow to the face while fighting for position, didn't even see it coming. Coach just said welcome to the club felt like a rite of passage honestly. The funny part was trying to explain it at work the next day, no one understands that elbows just happen in this sport. Kept getting asked if i was okay or if someone punched me. Just had to keep saying no its the game.

Insane from Italy: Pro Recco wins Serie A1 and returns alone to the top of the table with a perfect score.

How is this even possible? What was Olympic Roma doing in this game? Scoring only one goal the whole game is unbelievable. Pro Recco secured a victory that allowed them to return to the top of the standings, maintaining a perfect record. The team approached the match without leaving any room for doubt, taking home the three points needed to consolidate their top position.

I can't blame the losing team, the scoreboard shows why Recco is leading on the table. I found this site where you can watch replays and matches on any of your devices comfortably. https://sportsflux.live

How to shoot while in center??

Hey polo people! I know my question is kinda weird so I’ll give context. I’m a 6 foot 150lbs hs water polo (9) player and really fast. I usually play to create movement on either side and am a good defender, however I occasionally get put in set. I think due to my length and speed, im very good at getting ball side and being physical in set preparation. HOWEVER, when the ball gets passed to me I really struggle to shoot. It feels almost impossible to get a shot with a defender in my way. Is it my strength, technique, setup?? Ill take any tips. Thanks!

USA Water Polo ODP?

New to USAWP and the Olympic team program. Why do so many people take part in a paid tryout for the national team? Do Americans think they will be competitive at international tournaments. Serious sports programs trying to win international competitions do not charge prospective athletes to be part of the selection process. USAWP brought in $2.7mil from ODP programs in 2024.

nothing humbles you like getting counter attacked into oblivion

I had a game last weekend where we just couldn't stop their transition. Every time we shot they were already swimming the other way. coach was yelling but our legs were already dead. Lost by like ten goals. Its like we were playing a different sport. Anyway just needed to vent. anyone else had a game like that.

Begining to play at 42 and out of shape

F42. I started training water polo a week ago today. I’ve been to four practices so far (three per week). I’m really out of shape… I swam from ages 5 to 15, for a few years training five times a week, and I also played water polo, though not much, and I was pretty bad at it… Until a year ago, I was obese. I’ve now lost 20 kg. I quit smoking seven years ago.

My goal is to get fit and have fun. Any advice? The people I train with are really good players. Thank you!

Which country is actually improving the fastest in water polo right now?

The traditional powerhouses like Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, and Italy are still at the top, but it feels like a few nations are slowly closing the gap.

The United States stands out for steady growth, especially with more consistency and competitiveness at international level. Spain also looks interesting with a faster, more modern style and strong youth development coming through.

You still see teams like Greece and Montenegro staying dangerous too, always capable of upsetting bigger nations when things click.

Feels like the sport might be getting more balanced overall, but the question is whether anyone can actually break into that top tier long-term.

Started with a pool-deck notebook. Ended up building a water polo stats app

I've played water polo since 1988. Three of my kids play; one just committed to play at university. Along the way, I built an app... here's the story.

I started tracking stats on paper. Sitting in the stands with a notebook, writing down every goal, every exclusion, every save for my kids' games. Then I started putting it in Excel. Then their club asked me to do it for the whole team. Then the high school team. It quickly became too much paper and post game follow up.

So I built an app. Not because I'm a tech guy first. I'm a water polo lifer who wanted better tools for the sport I love.

I would appreciate your feedback. What's missing?

What it does:

- 📡 Stream live to YouTube or record locally: with a live scoreboard in your club's colors

- 📊 Shareable game and season reports: send to coaches, parents, or players after every game

- 👤 Player profiles with full stat history

- 🧠 Coach insights: the kind of data that actually changes how you prepare for the next game. Only Coaches can see it.

It's so different now. I don't have a single photo of me playing in High School.

If you're a coach, a stats parent, or a club trying to look more professional on the pool deck, I built this for you.

[Android (Water Polo Stats)](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.clubstats.app) | [iOS (Water Polo Team Stats)](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/water-polo-team-stats/id6758033630) | [customperformance.com](https://customperformance.com)

Happy to answer anything. 🤽

2 Temecula school trustees criticized for comments about water polo players in swimwear briefs

My question would be is how do these board members know what's on the porn sites they compare this to to be able to make that judgment? Hmmm
