Has anyone else had a terrible experience with the Withings Body Scan?

I bought a Withings Body Scan expecting a premium health device, and at this point both the scale and the customer service have been ridiculous.

The scale regularly gives me weight readings that vary by over half a pound within minutes under identical conditions. Body fat has varied by nearly a full percentage point back-to-back, while body composition and heart measurements frequently fail or come back “inconclusive.”

For a $500+ device marketed around accurate, comprehensive health data, that’s pretty concerning.
I contacted Withings, which began the troubleshooting circus. I was told to check positioning, foot moisture, settings, the cable stopper, whether I touched the handle or my phone, whether the scale moved, wait between measurements, perform multiple tests without the handle, then multiple tests with it, and document exact times and results. I did all of it. After reviewing those tests and their diagnostic data, Withings told me in writing that the scale had a “hardware issue and must be replaced.”

Great. Send me a replacement.

Except a few days later, the same representative suddenly told me they were “unable to detect a hardware defect” and therefore couldn’t replace it. Apparently the scale wasn’t the only thing producing inconsistent results.

They also started processing a refund instead of the exchange I requested. Since I purchased it using FSA funds from a previous employer, that could leave me unable to reuse hundreds of dollars of those funds. Now they’re “checking with finance” to see whether they can stop the refund they initiated.

So I’ve spent $500+ on a “premium” scale, gotten unreliable measurements, completed an absurd troubleshooting gauntlet, had Withings confirm the hardware was defective, and then watched them reverse their own conclusion when I asked them to actually replace it. If I have to step on a $500 scale repeatedly to figure out what I weigh and cross my fingers that its headline features actually work, what exactly am I paying $500 for?

Has anyone else experienced this with the Body Scan or dealt with Withings support contradicting their own diagnosis like this?

Sleep heart rate spike 192bpm

3:32 58 bpm

3:43 192 bpm

3:52 59 bpm

I went back all the way to March and there highest spike was less than 120bpm.

Normally I'd brush it off as a glitch but I just started a new antihistamine regiment yesterday for MCAS. But 192bpm is just insane. Is it even humanly possible? I don't feel different this morning other than maybe I feel a lot better, and I'm awake rather than groggy... So confused.

From Scanwatch 1 to Scanwatch 2, first impressions

After years of wearing a Scanwatch I have moved to the Scanwatch 2. After comparing both experiences, I have three complaints:

  1. The vibration on 2 is noticeably weaker, so I'm now missing some notifications.
  2. The Quick Look feature is much less responsive. Most times the display does not turn on when I flick my wrist or flex my arm.
  3. The new display fonts are nicer with uppercase/lowercase, but even with the higher resolution it's now more difficult to read messages if you are even slightly visually impaired and you're not wearing glasses at the moment, which is the case during my daily workout.

Also, may I suggest adding a NFC chip in Scanwatch 3 for payments? Maybe compatible with Google's or Samsung's Wallets.

Finally, as a heavy Withings user (I also own a Sleep Analyzer pad, a BPM Core cuff and recently a Body Smart scale), I'd like to see Catalan, my mother tongue, added to the list of languages supported in the devices and the mobile app.

Withings Body Scan 2 always gives "Inconclusive" body composition results. Anyone else having this issue?

Hi everyone,

At this point, I am mostly posting to see if anyone else has had the same problem because I'm running out of ideas with my Withings Body Scan 2.

My Body Scan 2 refuses to complete a body composition measurement. Every single attempt ends with "Inconclusive".

The strange thing is that the other advanced measurements seem to work normally:

  • Weight measurements work every time
  • ECG/heart measurements work
  • Nerve Health Score measurements work

The only measurement that consistently fails is body composition.

A lot of troubleshooting has already been done with Withings support, including:

  • Cleaning the scale and handle electrodes
  • Making sure feet are positioned correctly on the conductive strips
  • Trying different grip positions
  • Holding the handle both higher and lower as suggested
  • Repeating measurements over multiple days
  • Following all instructions provided by support

Photos have been sent to support, and more recently videos showing exactly how the measurement is performed, including stepping onto the scale and holding the handle during the scan.

The frustrating part is the amount of time spent trying to make it work. Some mornings I spent 15-20 minutes repeating measurements and adjusting my stance, and then tried again when I got home from work. After weeks of troubleshooting, I eventually gave up and am now just waiting for a response from support. In the meantime, I'm not really using the scale anymore because the main reason for buying it was the body composition feature.

The marketing videos make it look like you just step on and everything magically works. Real life hasn't been anything like that for me.

One thing I think Withings could improve is their guidance. For a flagship product, there should be clear official videos showing:

  • Exactly how the feet should be placed on the conductive strips
  • How high the handle should be raised
  • Common mistakes that cause measurements to fail

It would also be much more useful if these demonstrations were done by average people and slightly heavier people, rather than models in ideal conditions. I'm based in Europe and I'm nowhere near the body weights that are common in some parts of the US, so it's hard to believe that body size alone should be causing issues.

At this point I'm mainly waiting to hear what support or their engineering team has to say.

Has anyone else experienced this with the Body Scan 2?

  • Did body composition fail while the other measurements worked?
  • Were you able to get it working eventually?
  • Did Withings provide a technical explanation?
  • Was it a hardware issue, software issue, or something else?

Would be interested to hear if anyone has gone through the same thing. Thanks!

Body Scan 2: New 1701 firmware

NOTE:
This firmware was sent due to a ticket I opened with support regarding huge errors in calculation of my body fat percentage, as well as a DEXA documenting the error was real.
It is not likely in a general release (yet). If you are having issues with accuracy, contact support and request a fix for the accuracy.

Woke up this morning with a message from support letting me know a new firmware is out. They said it should help with my inaccurate measurements of body fat %.

From my initial observations and my first scan - it does not appear to have any effect on my percentages. They remain exactly the same as before - BUT: I was told to force a sync (whatever that means) and take several measurements. I know from my experience with the Body Smart the scale also used past readings as part of their evaluation - either as a sanity check or as part of the algorithm.

I'll hold of on that judgement until I know I followed their procedure exactly. If it does change, I'll update this post with the new percentages. (My last DEXA was a week ago).

EDIT:

Did a full factory reset and paired the scale. I don't know if this did anything, as nothing much changed.

I also did several scans and a pattern emerged. Every scan had me gaining fat % and losing some muscle %.

Yesterday: 24.4
Today: 24.5, 24.6, 24.9. 25.6 (all taken within 5-10 min of each other).

So it really does look at past results!

It's too soon to tell whether the new firmware fixes the fat % issue, but so far it looks like it's improving. What matters most is the number it stops on.

So for this morning, it peaked at about 1% change. This just may be how much of a swing it allows? I'll need to track over several days to figure it out.

Another redditor suggested creating a new dummy account and take initial readings from there. I did this before with the body smart, and it's an excellent idea. I'll try to get the results up tonight.

EDIT 2:

Looks like it reduced my error from 14.9% to about 13.8%. After about a 1% correction in the right direction, it stopped.

For those of you with the 3% error, I'd still give it a shot - as I do not know what exactly they were trying to correct in the algorithm for this release - and your 3% problem was pretty serious.

As for me, I'll still watch it. But now the metrics it gives me (BMR, visceral fat, muscle percentage) all the things that are important to the GLP-1 users they scale is marketed as "good for", are all suspect.

I'm not expecting a 99% match to DEXA results, anything around 5% error should be reasonable for a scale at this price point. Hopefully better.

Need 100% muscle mass to be in the "high" in zone

Unless I become a single muscle cell, I don't see it happening. I picked Body Scan as the flair since it's the same composition tech as in Body fit (my scale)

Scanwatch 2 syncing question

I'm completely new to the smart watch world and I'm considering a withings because they look classy and just like a regular watch but still record all the health data I'd love to have. My question though is about the saving of this data and how it syncs. I usually leave my phone in airplane mode most of the day and only use it a couple of times a day (I try to not be glued to my phone); it's also often not on my body but at a desk on the other side of the house. Will the data the scan watch 2 collects throughout the day sync to my phone when I do take it out of airplane mode/when I'm paired with it? Or, does the scan watch not save data and will only sync what it collects in real-time? Not sure if a smart watch will fit my lifestyle if I have to stay paired with my phone constantly. Thanks.

Withings+ off the rails

Got a congratulatory message from Withings+ today on losing 35+ lbs of body fat in a mere week of half-hour walks and working at a desk all day.

Sometimes the jokes just write themselves....

The big surprise was it brought up my DEXA scores. I've been trying to manipulate the summary messages to give me better results, but it won't let me aside from the summary on the Readiness tab.

The AI Agent has actually been pretty useful - I've been prodding it to see how some of the metrics are calculated. It doesn't divulge proprietary information, but it does give enough info to see where the numbers come from.

None of that is an issue, it's the calculation of the split between body fat % and muscle mass % that's the error throwing off my results, and I assume everyone else's too (who are reading low body fat %).

One other odd observation is the AI agent cannot see hydration levels. So that weight gain shown above is actually 5-8 lb of water weight gain (plainly seen in the app). Because it cannot see this, it just assumes changes in fat and muscle mass instead of giving a more enlightened answer (muscle repair and glycogen stores).

Withings blood pressure patent

Cuffless blood pressure measurement using PPG.

“Method for determining blood pressure data

This description relates to a PPG device, a PPG system and a method for determining blood pressure data, including arterial blood pressure data, using an optical sensor, such as a photoplethymosgram (PPG) sensor.“

If this feature land on ScanWatch 3, I’ll buy one.

Are BodyScan 2 scales getting shipped? Mine is not.

My order placed on August 5th still shows an expected arrival date of Aug 14th while the status is "We're preparing these items for shipping."

So unless they have a star trek transporter I don't think I am getting my scale on time.

I contacted support yesterday and he insisted the scale would arrive on time. He refused to acknowledge that was not possible since it had not yet shipped and expected delivery was the next day. They just lie.

Sorry I wasted $628 on this company!

No Refund / Buyers Beware

Below is the email I received from Withings on July 29, 2026. I removed my case number and replaced with x's for security.

Winthings Support here on Reddit also reached out to me after my first post for my case number but has since gone silent. No more replies in chat.

It's now August 14, 2026 and I still have not received my refund, any explanation on what is going on or what happened.

If you buy any product from Withings and want to return it, be aware that you may be stuck without a refund.

In my case, Withings has in their possession both the returned item and my money.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Withings. Your refund is now ready for processing.

Please allow up to 7 business days after we've received your product for the refund to be completed.

Great product but still highly inaccurate

I have owned a Body+ scale which says I am 18% BF but my dexascan says that I am 27% with a considerable amount of visceral fat (makes sense if you take a lot at me). Such is the case a lot of my south asian friends as well where the foot only BIA scale misses the BF% by quite a lot.
Hence I got the body scan 2 since it claimed to solve that very issue but the new scale also claims 21% body fat and says I have a very healthy amount of visceral fat. So clearly its still not able to detect central adiposity :/ Will have to return this scale as well and stick to semi-annual dexa scans

Simple solution to avoid bending down for the scale handle - Body Fit

Hi everyone,

Does anyone else find it annoying to bend down and pull up the handle every time before weighing themselves? (annoying not because of the extra movement but because of the scale is too light, so it lifts up too if you want to pull the handle)

I came up with a simple solution: I put two nails in the wall and placed the handle on them. Since the cable automatically retracts, the handle wouldn’t stay there on its own, so I secured the cable at the bottom with a small reusable zip tie.

I recommend using a releasable zip tie like the one shown in the picture. It can be opened by pressing the small tab. A regular zip tie may be difficult to remove without accidentally damaging the cable.

Of course, using two nails as a holder isn’t the most elegant solution. Maybe someone with 3D-printing skills could design a proper wall mount that others could easily print and use. 🙂

My questions are:

  1. Does having to bend down for the handle every time bother you too?

  2. What do you think of my solution?

Withings Will Take Your Money — Good Luck Getting a Return Label or Refund

As an update, I have now spent hours over two days trying to get a return label for my BPM Vision and cuff.

Withings has confirmed in writing that my full-refund eligibility is protected, acknowledged that I am ready to return everything immediately, and escalated the issue multiple times.

Still no label.

Today I was literally talking to two support agents, and neither could accomplish the incredibly complicated task of… emailing me a return label.

The cuff also started separating at the seam after only a few uses.

I actually liked the BPM Vision. But this customer service experience has completely killed the brand for me. At this point, I’m done wasting my time and will let Amex deal with it. I will update here if anything changes.

Update: Withings confirmed my refund - but still can’t provide a return label

Quick update to my previous post.

Withings confirmed in writing today that my full-refund eligibility for the BPM Vision and cuff is preserved while they resolve the return-label issue.

That is good, and I appreciate the confirmation.

What still surprises me is that a previously authorized return, still within the 30-day window, requires escalation to senior support just to generate another label. I really don’t have time to keep tracking this and waiting for another internal escalation. It has turned a supposedly easy return into a real-time intensive hassle. Maybe I will get my money back. We will see.

I will update again if and when they actually send it. Overall, I’m very disappointed with the return experience, especially given how heavily Withings advertises easy returns and how long the refund process can apparently take.

Integration with Garmin

Withings really should improve integration with Garmin watches. As an athlete I really like my body scan 2 scale. But I'm never going to buy a withings watch. I'm always going to buy a Garmin or suunto watch dedicated to ultra marathon races. It's really upsetting that the scale and app doesn't fully sync with with other sports watches and directly pull all relevant data from them. Health connect is not nearly good enough and is not fully effective.

Withings please look at sorting this out? In all honesty and respectfully.... athletes or outdoor enthusiasts are not going to buy your watches... Ever. But they will buy your superior scales.... and it's upsetting that we cant utilise they scale fully without having a withings watch. Please please look to rectify.
