Cash For unwanted Cars service in the area?

Does anyone know of good & reliable cash for unwanted car businesses / have you used one? I have an unregistered car that’s not worth repairing to get back on the road. I’m getting heaps of FB pop up ads but haven’t made any inquiries yet. TIA

Moving here from QLD

I have about 10k savings. A car. 200 hours of annual leave from previous job. I’m leaving my life behind and wanting to try living here, as Sydney would be too expensive.
With 4 years of disability work, what would be the odds I survive living here or like it?

What's something every Wollongong local has complained about at least once?

I'll start, Trying to find a park near the beach on a hot Saturday. Feels like it's almost a rite of passage at this point. What would you add?

8 ball pool suggestion

Looking for suggestions for some good places to play 8 ball pool with the costing and other info around the gong. I used to play long ago, but saw someone playing at the Illawarra hotel from outside, and I was caught up in a craving again! I've got no idea how it works there or anywhere, need some good suggestions!🎱

Software Engineer Job Hunt

Hi everyone,

It’s been incredibly tough to land a steady stream of phone screens, let alone interviews.

I'm a software engineer who recently relocated to Wollongong from overseas. I have about 9 years of experience, mostly specializing in mobile and web development, and I integrate modern AI tools heavily into my daily workflow to move fast.

I am trying to figure out if there's a blind spot in my process or if it's just a reflection of the current Australian market. For the past 2 months, I've been focusing on:

- Building production-ready side projects: Launching real web and mobile apps on the stores to keep my skills sharp, rather than just leaving them as raw GitHub repos.

- Networking on LinkedIn: Engaging meaningfully with local developers and sharing actual tech insights (no generic, AI-generated spam)

- Local community: Joining the Siligong tech community on Slack to connect with locals.

The results after 2 months: I've had around 5 phone screens and made it to the final technical rounds with 2 companies. Unfortunately, no offers yet: one went with another candidate, and the other is frozen until their new financial year budget clears up.

I've been targeting a mix of remote roles across Australia and hybrid/onsite roles here in Wollongong.

I absolutely love the city and love building software, but the rejection is starting to take a toll. I’d love to hear from other local devs or tech professionals:

- Are there specific local platforms, meetups, or channels I might be missing?

- Any brutal honesty on my approach?

Thanks for reading!

Wollongong Council Locks in Budget, Rejects Pause on Renewables

Hi! I’m a gong local who likes local politics, but gets that it’s pretty dull most of the time! So I’ve been working on this idea to help people stay across Wollongong Council decisions without having to sit through hours of meetings. Every month I will listen to the meetings and read the agenda and business papers, and then do a write up of the important decisions. This is the very first edition, so please let me know what you think, what could be improved, or what else it should include. And, if you like it, sign up to get the next edition in your inbox and feel free to share it with someone!

Should the M1 to Nowra be 110km/h?

Minus the Kiama bends obviously, I feel the 100km/h speed limit on the M1 could easily be changed to 110km/h, am I the only one who thinks this?

Yes it isn’t motorway standard but neither is the majority of the Hume or federal highway to Canberra. Cops seem to have a field day pulling people over too! Does anyone know why this is?

Restaurant gift card?

Hi all, can anyone recommend a gift card that can be used at lots of different restaurants in Wollongong? I’ve seen best restaurants but it looks like that’s only accepted at 2 - is there one anyone can recommend that is a bit more widely accepted?

Anyone else have a hot water system located in the most ridiculous spot imaginable?

I swear whoever designed the layouts for the older brick flats around North Gong was playing a prank. I was trying to find our main water shut-off valve and the hot water tank yesterday because the landlord asked for the serial number, and it took me twenty minutes just to find it.

turn out it is shoved into this tiny hidden cavity behind the kitchen pantry. You literally have to take out three shelves and crawl in face-first with a torch just to see the pressure valve. If that thing ever decides to split, my kitchen cabinets are going to become an absolute sponge before we even notice.

It made me look into how people even replace these things when they eventually die, and the logistics of upgrading older indoor units to modern continuous flow ones outside looks pretty high-end difficulty. especially with some of the strata rules around here.

Basically - if you're inspecting a new place to lease or buy around the area, honesly check where the tank is.
