[1794] Words being used
Is it me or have the words being used changed in the puzzle? When Wordle first came up, all the words were, at least it seemed to me, uplifting or positive in nature. It seemed to change after the NYT bought it. It used to be a semi-clue I kept in the back of my mind, if I thought the possible solution was a negative word I knew that wasn't the solution.
I know the original puzzle had a 2,000 word database and perhaps the NYT didn't like the thought of re-using solutions?
I'm not complaining just wanted a little validation.
Today's solution would never have been used in the original game IMHO
[####] I experimented the success rate of a 3 word combination
So I thought of experimenting with Wordle. I wanted to see if I managed to get the word in the 4th try, if I used ADIEU, BROCK and LYMPH as my first 3 words. I thought I'd experiment before actually mathematically calculating. Here are the results, and I think I can say it increases the chances by a huge bunch.
This experiment included me experiencing human errors. The number of experiments I conducted were 100. I used wordly.org
And also, if I'd get enough in the first 2 words, I'd directly jump to attempting the answer in the third.
I personally always use adieu as my first word. Slowly I developed a combination of 3 complementing words, adieu, brock then lymph. adieu to check the vowels. If there are none from adieu, Brock to check o and if there isn't o either, lymph to check for y. As none of their letters match, I eliminate 15 letters on spot. Usually I won't go till nymph, and get enough letters in adieu to try a new word. I'd usually only proceed to brock and lymph, when everything ends up in greens and greys. But I wanted to see if this combination can be used almost blindly, so ran this experiment. I proceeded till I got sufficient letters or reached lymph. Even if I didn't get enough letters, I'd stubbornly try to finish it in the fourth try by trying every combination. So, maybe even though you can finish it by the 4th try, it's not a feasible solution? If I wasn't stubborn, the results for 4 and 5 would have been close. I'm really bad at words, and usually can't do well in Wordle unless I just end up trying every single combination. I usually need as many greens as possible before I can think of what the answer could be. In this method, at least you have a 62% chance to get the word right in the first 4 guesses.

[####] Next level Wordle
Wordle is great. I've been playing Wordle against my mom for years. We trade our scores every day and it's always been fun. We wanted to be a little more challenged though so I made my own Wordle-style game with a twist - 6 letters instead of 5! It's a challenging new way to think and now we play that daily and share our scores. We really dig it. If you're feeling up for a new challenge, please give a whirl and lmk your thoughts. Thanks!
[1781] Languages not being words
On may 5th I decided to do my wordle (latch was the answer) and had LATXX. one of the words I tried was Latin but apparently that's not on their word list. I just find this strange because I've made up words that I don't even know before and they get recognized, meaning their library obviously includes some very obscure things... just not Latin I guess... The worst part is Latin has MULTIPLE meaning. Latin as in the language, Latin as in the general style of music, and to refer to Latin American people.
This led me to look a bit more and it seems that it's just languages in general because I tried "Hindi" and it didn't work although "greek" does. So it seems most languages aren't considered words
[####] Why JUNKS Instead of BUNKS?
I found an article that suggests playing JUNKS, WHOMP, CALYX, and FRITZ to eliminate (or confirm) 20 of the the 26 letters and wirtually guarantee that you can find the secret word (with some chance of busting), and I immediately found that I could almost always find the word in 5, sometimes 6.
Later that night I started to wonder, though--why JUNKS and not BUNKS, given that B shows up much more often than J?
[####] Wordle can't please everyone
Wordle can't make everyone happy
I'm hearing complaints that Wordle is doing repeats already after about 2000 puzzles, saying there are thousands more five letter words.
Bro, some players bled from the nostrils when Wordle used CAROM and RUPEE. If those words are too obscure, I'm not sure there would be a good reaction when they get to GRIKE, WOALD, and BRIZE.
[####] I made a Wordle Scratchpad Tool! It's not a solver, just a worksheet
I was hung over yesterday and trying to solve the Sunday Wordle. I was struggle bussing. When I'm working a particularly difficult puzzle, I like to "sketch out" or visualize potential words in the Wordle input field. Like if I know M is in position 3 and A is in position 4, I'll use X as placeholders and type X-X-M-A-X, then change it to X-X-M-A-P, then X-E-M-A-X to help me visualize different potential word guesses. The problem is the Wordle input field is not super great for that. You can't easily edit individual letters in the middle, so you end up deleting and retyping over and over. If it gets too difficult and complicated, I'll break out the paper and pencil.
But yesterday that required getting off the couch, which really didn't appeal to me. I searched for a tool that basically did what I do in my head (and sometimes on paper) to help me organize my guesses. I couldn't find anything like it anywhere.
So I made it! It's essentially just a little digital scratchpad or worksheet:
https://wordlescratchpad.netlify.app
What it does:
Top row: lock in your known greens, and save your yellows per position. Multiple yellows per slot are supported. The greens and yellows you save here also automatically light up in their corresponding colors on the keyboard.
Scratchpad rows below: the locked positions stay fixed, you only edit the unknown slots. Duplicate a row with one tap to try variations without retyping.
Custom keyboard: tap to mark a letter gray (not in the word), long-press to mark it yellow (in the word, wrong slot).
Red warning appears if you type a yellow-excluded letter from the top row into the column it can't go in.
What it deliberately does NOT do:
No word lists, no suggestions, no autocomplete
No "best next guess" recommendations
Nothing that gives you the answer
It's just a worksheet. You still do all the thinking, it just remembers stuff for you so you don't have to keep retyping or holding it in your head or break out a notepad.
It's a single HTML file, no backend, no tracking, no accounts. All your state stays in your browser. Designed to work on your phone. I'm sure it'll mostly work on desktop but I haven't tested that so no promises. On your phone, open it, tap the browser menu → Add to Home Screen and it'll launch full-screen like an app.
Free, no ads, just a thing I made for myself and figured I'd share because frankly I'm pretty proud of it and think it is pretty slick.
Hope it's useful to anyone else who solves the way I do. Enjoy!
[####] Did anybody lose their streak this week?
In my Wordle group, a few family members lost their streaks. I had three 6s and a 5.4 average.. pretty tough. How did you do?

[1792] Wordle Skill 0?
Any ideas why my G4 ROVER would have received a Skill score of 0 by the bot? Real and fairly common word, seemed solid for placing the vowels and sorting where the R would go. I appreciate that other words might, statistically, be stronger, but I usually don’t see a zero unless I use some really “off book” word or reuse a letter in an incorrect position.
Any insight?

[####] New badge idea: Line 5 sacrifice
I’ve been playing daily since 2020 and a line five sacrifice, when you have a missing letter that could be one of many is not at all uncommon for me. Would be a fun additional badge.
