Some photos of my Granddad's I found

He lived in York in the 70s, but these photos look like the 90s to me. My mum has lived here for the last 40+ years so I reckon they were taken on a visit to see us. I could be wrong though, of course.

Sorry about the glare! It's so tricky to get a good angle of printed photos

Free GPS Treasure Hunt Around Sydney (7km) – Looking for Feedback!

Hi everyone,

I've built a free GPS treasure hunt called Governor's Challenge and I'm looking for feedback from fellow Sydneysiders.

It's a 7km self-guided walk that starts at the Art Gallery of NSW and takes you around Sydney while you solve clues and puzzles along the way.

To celebrate the launch, it's completely free to play for the next month.

I'd genuinely love to know:

  • Was the difficulty about right?
  • Were the clues fun?
  • Was the route enjoyable?
  • What would you change?

If you're looking for something different to do on a weekend (or if you're showing visitors around Sydney), I'd really appreciate any feedback.

Thanks everyone!

Is Market Weighton a pleasant place to live?

Looking at buying a house here. We’d like to move to a surrounding area to York, and we will be driving to York for work twice a week. Looking for somewhere peaceful with a few pretty woods etc. nearby for walking our dog. TIA

Best Neapolitan Pizza in Town?

Hello Good People of York....

I'm visiting your good looking city for the first time on business next week.

I'm a pizza nerd and was wondering if anyone could recommend a cool place that serves a classic, traditional Italian slice?

None of that American Domino's crap.

Thanks for the heads-up and all the best 🍕 🍕 🍕 🍕

Fishkeeping social?

Hydrophlox chrosomus

Is there anyone from around this location who would be interested in starting an IRL fishkeeping social please? It would be great if I could gather some local fishkeepers for regular but casual fish chat, maybe plant and item swaps, and anything else that people wanted to do.
I am going to post this far and wide to see if I can reach people, I think York could do with a fishkeeping community.
(ps. photo is of one of my fish, I specialise in temperates)

Places to make friends 21+

Hello! I just recently moved to York (edit - right in the middle of the) City, I am a professional (23) & hoping to meet some new people, does anybody have any recommendations?

Any groups I could follow on insta for events or places to go generally?

I like to do most activities but I am past the uni lifestyle & would like to meet some people that doesn’t include drinking all the time!

TIA!

Book club for people in their 20s and 30s

Hi, would there be interest for a book club set up for people in their 20s and 30s? I know there is the York book club and the left book group, but I haven't seen a dedicated group for younger people to focus on fiction/non-fiction

York art gallery request

Hii, I went to york recently and got to see the amazing Japanese art gallery, but I didnt have time to buy anything from the gift shop and I was wondering if anyone could pick some stuff up and post it to me. I will pay for the shipping of course 🙏🏻

or atleast send me pictures of the 2 items I have in mind and I will try to Google image search them 😊

It was a small blue crane ornament and there was also a pretty Japanese print tote bag.

Edit: Thankyou guys for all your offers, but I think ive found what I was looking for on the British museum website 😁🤍

Internet options for a short term stay on Lawrence street

Hi, I'm moving to a flat on Lawrence street for 6 months as I'm in-between rentals. I need a good and reliable connection for streaming and video calls. A friend suggested using my phone as a hotspot but I'm worried about patchy service and my phone battery. Most broadband contracts seem to be 12 or 24 months rather than rolling ones (though I'm looking into that). Any suggestions?

Glitch in matrix?

Hello, today I was driving down Bootham at around 10pm-10.10pm towards city centre and am a hundred percent sure I saw a man frozen in time. This has really disturbed me so I wanted to know if anyone else has experience the same thing. I’m hoping it’s just some kind of street performance or something of that kind. Here is what I saw:

Everyone around him was walking completely normally, seemingly not acknowledging him at all. He had brown hair, would maybe be thirties or middle aged, was wearing a navy blue polo, tan trousers and was carrying a plastic shopping bag, the cheap, thin old fashioned kind I rarely see anymore. He was mid step, completely frozen. I thought it was just some kind of prank so kept looking as long as I could, expecting him to snap out of it, but he never did. A second later I looked in my rearview mirror and saw him still there. Like I said, nobody else on the path even seemed to see him.

I wish I could’ve looked for longer, but it was difficult due to driving. I’m worried I’m seeing things so hoping someone can offer some reassuring insight.

Thanks

New Friends

Hi everyone,

I've lived in York for two years now but I haven't managed to make any friends. I've been off work for three weeks whilst I'm in-between jobs and I still have another two to go 😅 I'm not getting much if any social interaction so I was hoping someone or a group would meet me in the city centre for a pint whilst the weather is nice?

Alternatively, if someone could point me in the direction of any groups aimed at making friends, I'd appreciate it.

I'm a 27 year old male and would ideally be looking to meet people around my age group, give or take 5 years either way 🙂

Some /r/york queers are having a drink on Tuesday, 18 August. Feel free to come along if this interests you!

A few of us are gonna brave the heat and have another casual queer meetup on Tuesday, 18 August.

We've been doing these through Reddit and the /r/york Discord since February and have ended up with a nice lil group of around 4 to 6 people and pretty mixed in terms of age, sexuality, gender expression.

Nothing particularly organised, we're just gonna sit around and have a drink & chat. If you'd like to come along and chill with some queer nerds, you're very welcome!

When: 19:00, Tuesday 18 August

Where: City Screen Picturehouse Café, probably outside on the balcony if it's bearable, otherwise on the sofas or at one of the tables towards the back. We'll have a fluffy rabbit on the table so you can find us.

Feel free to just turn up, or reply here/the Discord/DM me!

The reason Yearsley Pool can keep going

When I went to Yearlsey Swimming Pool, with me being from the North East, I had no idea the impact it had on the local community. Seeing the old sign for Yearsley Baths, and reading a little into the history, it became clear what it meant to people in the area.

People have held protests to keep it open and posted many many nostalgic comments and quotes on local history groups on social media...

So I knew when James told me it could now be open for years to come it meant a lot to the community - especially with leisure centre closures across the country.

Does anyone remember Yearsley pool from their childhood?

Photobooths

Are there any nice, souvenir photobooths in York. The ones where the photos come out in a strip template of 4 photos. EDIT: for fun, similar to the vintage photobooths in London.

Ideally not in a pub or bar .

Trouser repair (cheap/free)

Does anyone know where/how I can repair my jeans and trousers for free or for cheap in York? I have a job interview next week and these are the only good pairs I have and I can’t really afford to buy any new ones either.

I’d really appreciate if anyone can point me to somewhere where I can get them repaired.

None of the repair cafes are open over the summer either.

I apologise for this but I wasn’t sure where else to ask.
