Thinking bout switchin

My dad got me an old thinkcentre m53 and gave me his old monitor for my school work.

The problem is it runs old windows 10 and it is a bit slow even when connected to ethernet.

So I'm thinking of switching to zorin os soon . Is it a good decision? Do I really need it at this point in time?

I'll mainly be using it for:

  1. Watching lectures

  2. C++ stuff

  3. Python stuff

  4. Some machine learning perhaps

  5. Maybe some mathematical programms in python like matplotlib

That's about it nothing too serious just heard that linux runs good on small hardware like this

I don't really have any problem rn with windows but was hoping the community could help me.

Also if I should use zorin os what version should I use and is there a good tutoriel for it. If there is i sincerely request you to please drop it here

Idgaf about looks just it should have dark mode support all my software i already use.

And not crash.

8gb DDR3 ram

256 gb HDD storage

Pentium J2900 (quad core)

Also should I do a dual boot with windows first or just commit to it

is zorin os support unity?

I'm a Unity dev looking to ditch Windows 11 for Linux. I've asked friends and ChatGPT, and everyone says Zorin OS is the closest thing to Win 11. I'm a total Linux noob—never touched it before. My main question is, does Zorin OS run Unity, specifically the Unity 6 Editor? Any help would be appreciated since I'm just starting out with Linux.

Nvidia driver / old GPU GTX 960

I used Zorin OS 17 without any issues, but ever since I upgraded to Zorin OS 18, it's been slow and kind of glitchy. And the reason is simply my GPU: the GTX 960.

I know about the driver situation. I installed Zorin OS 18 with the NVIDIA driver, and I've already gone into the Zorin OS settings and tried several different driver versions. Some are even worse than others.

Anyway, it's just not working out. I'm seriously thinking about giving up on Zorin OS. Does anyone have any suggestions? Which driver are you using?

I'm even considering buying an equivalent AMD GPU just because of this.

Recently having trouble launching anything I installed with "Software"

I just recently began having issues with just about all the software I installed through "Software". I re-installed a few using deb files and those work but previous installations or attempts to launch from home-screen links give me this:

Steam now requires user namespaces to be enabled.

This requirement is the same as for Flatpak, which has more detailed

information available:

https://github.com/flatpak/flatpak/wiki/User-namespace-requirements

I follow the instructions written there, but Steam and some of the others still don't work. Can someone advise or help me out? I am a noob to Linux.

Using partition on another disk for steam library

Hello, I have just switched to Zorin OS and has been configuring for the last few hours. This is my first time using any linux distro so I am really confused on a lot of things. I am currently dual booting with windows on the hard drive and Zorin on the ssd. My ssd is quite small being only 128GB and I don't want to fill it up with steam games. My hdd on the other hand is 1TB and I have partitioned 600gb and set it up as E: disk to use for the steam library and hopefully other big applications. However it seems that the partition is not showing up when I press the add disk button on steam settings. Is it possible to use this partitioned space as a steam library?

For added context the "370 GB volume" disk holds the windows and the "629 GB volume" disk is completely empty.

Thank you for your time!

Help with not being able to boot ZorinOS 18.1 after installation

I am attempting to install ZorinOS 18.1 on a fairly old 2Tb HDD that had no operating system previously installed in it, but was very full.

I did all the normal procedure, engraved a pen-drive with the OS, booted from the pen-drive, went through the installation process, all fairly normal. After installation it told me to remove the pen-drive and press enter to restart and do the first boot and I did.

Ever since I've been stuck at this screen, no matter what I do it doesn't ever boot. I tried letting it go on all day and still nothing.

I tried doing this installation process again a couple more times, but it every time I'm hit with the same problem. I tried doing a normal installation a couple of times, tried safe graphics and still nothing. I tried the installation method that came with the Nvidia drivers pre-installed, but it was giving me an error about something called ubiquity.service and I wasn't able to quite figure out what is going on or how to fix it yet.

My secure boot and fast boot are both disabled.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there an issue with my pen-drive or is this an issue with my HDD? I am completely clueless on how to proceed from here and any help is appreciated.

I am a newbie when it comes to Linux and messing with OS and English is not my first language, so sorry if my writing is a bit confusing or lacks important details. If you need any more info, please ask away in the comments :)

Is this important, and if it is, how to make it updated?

when I update the apps, I see this, it doesn't update, it had been like two weeks until now and I am not sure what that is

Just switched from Windows 11, is it really so good there's no reason to go back?

So I've had windows my entire friggin life since windows 3.1. I was curious about Zorin Pro 18.1, and needed to format my drive anyway, so I did a clean install. Holy crap man. It literally has zero problems, does everything I want, and I feel like I don't need windows anymore.

Yes, I expected some games and my music recording stuff not to work, but I mostly play on GeForce now anyway.

Is this what most people say when they switch, that there's no reason to go back?

Is My Laptop Really Bricked??

I recently moved my SSD from my desktop computer (Compaq elite 8300) to my laptop (Dell e6220) after upgrading the desktop ssd. All went well except that I got an error message that a GParted backup file was corrupted, but the primary file was ok and would be used.

Still. I wanted to correct the issue even though it seemed minor, so I asked Google for a solution.

Three hours of following Goggles suggestions including typing lots of terminal command, taking the entire laptop apart to reset the CMOS battery, putting the laptop back together, and the laptop no longer boots past the Dell logo screen, nor will it boot to BIOS.

Google AI now advises that it has no more advice and that my laptop had experienced a catastrophic motherboard failure.

Is there anyway to salvage the laptop?

Does anyone know how to solve this?

I downloaded "dash to dock animated" and it just leaves this "shadow" hanging over the apps, and I can't get rid of it. I'VE TRIED ALMOST EVERYTHING.

How to send files from pc to mobile using Zorin Connect?

First of all, let me give you a very brief review on my experience of using ZorinOS for the past two weeks. It has been excellent. Since my desktop pc is very old and I don't use it for much other than some office works and web browsing, it has really been a rewarding experience to say the least. I use onlyoffice for my office related works and it works flawlessly ootb.

However, I have been dabbling with Zorin Connect for exploring file sharing from my phone to pc and that is where I am encountering some problems. While the phone to pc pipeline seems to work without issues, I am having trouble sharing files from my pc to phone. The option does not seem to appear on the interface at all. What should I do to enable this option on my PC? I tried the documentation provided by Zorin itself, but I am afraid there isn't enough to go around on this issue. Please help me out on this one. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

[Zorin OS 18 / Wayland] How to force specific apps (like Terminal) to always open on a specific monitor?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently running Zorin OS 18 (Wayland) and I'm struggling with window placement across a dual-monitor setup.

I need my Terminal (and a few other apps) to always open and stay fixed on my secondary monitor. However, Wayland's default behavior seems to force new windows to open wherever the mouse pointer is currently active.

Here is what I’ve tried so far to fix this:

  • Smart Auto Move (Extension): I tried setting an override rule for the Terminal, but it fails to restore on the second screen.
  • Auto Move Windows (Extension): I tried assigning the Terminal to a specific workspace. However, since the secondary monitor doesn't seem to have its own independent workspace number, the extension just pushes the terminal to a hidden workspace on my primary monitor.

Does anyone know of a extension, script, or configuration that can actually force an application to open on a specific physical monitor / position?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

How to remove leftovers of deleted apps in Zorin OS 18.1

Hello, some time ago I tried ClamAv and some GUIs. Also installed Mozilla's Firefox and Thunderbird.

I found that I have many leftovers I can't delete or send to Trash.

I tried Terminal but it says the apps are not installed and can't be removed or purged.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Mouse Buttons Not Working On Login Screen

Hi Guys, seeking help resolve a simple but quite annoying issue with Zorin. Issue started about 3 weeks ago and I was hoping with the recent updates the issue would go away but sadly it stayed.

Basically on the login screen, any buttons of my mouse would not register input. Clicking on the user name or the icons on the top right, all no go. The pointer responds properly. I need to use the Tab button on the KB to be able to select my user name and input my password. As soon as I het to the desktop, mouse buttons work flawlessly. The mouse also works on the lockscreen. Its just really on the login screen where its present.

I am using the latest Zorin.

System is Beelink Ser3 Ryzen 7.

Mouse is just a generic mouse with LR and Scroll buttons.

Thanks for all the help. Cheers!
