VLC audio problems in Zorin OS 18.1

Hello,

I was listening to an mp3 file with VLC media player ln my Laptop when suddenly the audio didn't come out, it was silent. I tried to listen to another song, also an mp3 and it happened again.

I closed and opened again VLC, tried another song, same problem.

I restarted my Laptop and tried to play the mp3 again, same problem no sound.

I went to YouTue and played a video, it had sound no problem.

I don't know what is happening, unistalled VLC and installed it back, tried the mp3 file again there was no sound.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Setting Up Zorin 18

I just installed Zorin 18 onto my Desktop (Lenovo Ideacenter) and am wondering if there is anything I should set up in Zorin that will help or is an underrated setting or program to use with this. I'm pretty computer savvy (was able to set up proton VPN through the terminal) so just wondering if there is anything else I need to turn on or turn off before really getting off to the races with this OS.

Got tired of Windows hiding everything, so I built my own control tool

Windows keeps getting more bloated, more locked down, and more filled with stuff nobody actually wants. Every update hides more settings, adds more ads, and buries basic controls behind layers of UI. Even simple things that used to be one click now require digging through menus, registry edits, or random scripts from the internet.

I got tired of fighting the OS just to make it behave like a normal system again. So instead of relying on debloat scripts or hoping Microsoft stops adding nonsense, I started building my own tool to expose the controls Windows keeps burying.

The goal wasn’t to make something flashy or corporate-looking. I just wanted a clean interface that gives back the options Windows tries to hide. Something practical, fast, and actually useful.

Right now it already handles things like:

revealing hidden system options

disabling annoying built‑in features

cleaning up parts of the OS that normally require scripts

undoing some of Microsoft’s “forced” decisions

making Windows feel less restrictive and less like an ad platform

I’m improving it based on real use, not marketing. If something is annoying in Windows, I try to make it fixable. If something is buried, I try to surface it. If something is forced, I try to give the user a choice again.

If you want to check it out or give feedback, it’s here: https://crazyking.win

Zorin OS does not initialize.

I installed Zorin OS on my old laptop (which had Windows 10). But after the installation, it won't boot; it gets stuck on the boot screen (first photo). I even managed to boot by selecting Recovery Mode in the advanced settings, but when I shut down or restart the device, the problem persists (this also happens in Linux Mint in the Cinnamon and Xfce editions). If anyone can solve this, I would appreciate it. (The other photos are of the BIOS and the system specifications)

Ran Software Update via GUI, repo errors only

Just ran an update using the Software Updater and it is giving errors which looks to be the NVIDIA repos not reachable.

I also tried in the terminal and it gives the similar error.

I don't remember adding or installing custom repos for the Nvidia drivers as I was just using the "additional drivers" tab in Software & Updates via GUI.

I try to run the update again, but this time I unchecked all related to NVIDIA drivers. Which broke the Nvidia drivers (which I believe is because of the kernel update).

Anyone having the issue right now? I just wanted to check if the specific links below is down for anyone else or I have to make changes on my system to get the latest drivers or any Nvidia drivers at all.

CVE-2026-31431 (Copy Fail) Security Update When?

Hi!

Today I received two Security Updates.

How can I know what they were about?

Also, what happened with CVE-2026-31431 (Copy Fail) Patch?

When that Security Update is going to be available, and how to know?

Thank you!

From the net:

The patch for the CVE-2026-31431 vulnerability, known as Copy Fail, is currently being rolled out across various Linux distributions. However, specific information regarding the availability of this patch for Zorin OS 18.1 has not been provided.

Recommended Actions:

* Check Official Channels: It is advisable to monitor Zorin OS's official website or community forums for updates on the patch status.

* Stay Informed: Follow security advisories related to Zorin OS to ensure you receive timely information about the patch release.

General Patch Status for Other Distributions

Distribution Patch Status Notes:

Ubuntu, Not patched (mostly), No broadly released fixed kernels

Debian, Patched, Fix available in latest kernel packages

RHEL, Patching in progress, Gradual rollout of backported fixes

Fedora, Patching in progress, Updates being released

Not applying the CVE-2026-31431 patch on Zorin OS 18.1 can lead to local privilege escalation, allowing an unprivileged user to gain root access, which could compromise the entire system. Additionally, it may facilitate container escape scenarios in environments running untrusted workloads.

Are ZorinOS and AxionOS affiliates?

I just visited the ZorinOS website, just to find out that is similar to the AxionOS website, the Custom ROM for Android devices. Are they affiliates? I just asking for fun.

(Here's the AxionOS website, if u want compare it with the ZorinOS one) (I can post only one media at a time)

Tentato da un ritorno a Zorin

Salve a tutti!

Love Zorin Os. Need Microsoft Office to work.

Love Zorin Os in my laptop. My battery life increased by 2 hours and my laptop is snappier. Love the jiggly physics and the minimize and maximize animated. My biggest problem is I need office. My colleagues are using office and libreoffice doesn't work with them perfectly. Is there some way to make it work. Thank you

Lenovo Yoga 9i 2in1 fingerprint scanner

I followed this blog post (https://medium.com/@hrzum101/zorin-os-lenovo-yoga-9i-2-in-1-intel-fixing-fingerprint-sensor-issue-47ec62cfba6b) to try to get my fingerprint scanner working, but the option is not showing in the user settings. I'm on Zorin 18.1 so I'm wondering if that might be making the difference? I'm on the same hardware as the person posting it, but my Zorin version is different. Any thoughts? lmk if you need any more info, I'm not sure what would be helpful to share (new to linux)

PSA: Don't use the Flathub version of RustDesk for remote access

I use RustDesk religiously, and self-host their relay server. So far, so good.

I used Zorin's Software app to install it, and while it worked great, it was unavailable when I closed it down, despite having the Service started.

It turns out that because I installed the default Flathub version, after some frustration, I found that Flathub installs are containerized and isolated from the system, so of course, when I close RustDesk, the service stops because its container stops.

The solution was to download the installer from the Rustdesk site. This installs a more native version that can start and stop the service at the system level.

The result is that I can now remotely and securely access my Zorin OS PC!

New to linux

Hey I could use some help I’m trying to swap over to linux for the first time using zorin os and am having trouble. I have a Ryzen 7 0700F processor and a Nvidia RTX 5060 ti gpu. So far I have the iso flashed to my usb and am able to get it booted from the usb. After I go to install and follow the prompts I’m running into this issue where once it’s done installing and prompts me to remove the usb it isn’t booting. If anyone could help I’d greatly appreciate it I’ve been stuck in a loop of trying to get this to work for a few hours and have no clue what to do now.

Officially Using Zorin OS for work.

While this is not the first time I have used a Linux distro, it is the first time I am using it on a personal device. To give a little background, our office computers are, shall I say, "obsolete" and pretty slow. Because other people also use my workstation, I got a bit iffy about it.

Initially, I used my wife's gaming laptop as my primary work computer here in the office, but since she needs to use it now, I decided to utilize her old HP laptop instead. I originally wanted to use Ubuntu, as that was the only distro I was familiar with, but I decided to explore. I tried both Pop! OS and Mint, and I was actually using Mint for a good three weeks until I discovered Zorin OS. As soon as I gave it a try, I was immediately amazed and migrated to it.

I don't know about others, but I find Zorin much smoother to operate, and I'm currently very happy with the UI. I am exploring it further as a potential future replacement OS for my desktop at home, which currently runs Windows 10. That is all, I just wanted to share how happy I am with this OS.

Also yes, I am the only one using this OS in my office, which confuses my team for why I use something "complicated" and different from them. Haha.
