Broward Quick Build Traffic Calming Guide
The county recently published their Quick Build Guide as part of the Safety Action Plan, an effort to reduce roadway injuries and fatalities. An interesting part of it is that anyone can lead a demonstration project, as long as the city/county oversees it. So if you wanted to test out a way to slow down cars, and you convince your city, you can! Any low cost materials, like traffic cones can be used. I will say, though, they don't make the process that easy. These are the steps:
- Design
- Present to public
- Submit
- Wait for County engineering to review
- Revise if necessary
- Present final concept to public
- Notify public of project installation
- Installation
I would imagine this is something that a local neighborhood association could do with some planning and engagement. Cities can do it themselves, but I think it would require a heavy push from residents, as our engineers here in Broward are not taking progressive steps.
