Driving in Brazil (speed cameras)

I am Canadian, visiting Brazil (great country). Driving from Rio to Ouro Preto yesterday was an "interesting" experience.

In Canada (and most countries where I've traveled by car) speed limits depend on road type and rarely deviate (ex: 100kmh on highways, 50kmh in cities).

Based on yesterday's drive, in Brazil speed limits are in constant flux and strictly enforced with cameras. "Following the flow" isn't working well because many drivers exceed the posted limit between cameras (and then slow to a crawl:). I've probably got several tickets until I figured out how to adjust.

Google maps warns about cameras but the audio warning doesn't include posted and actual speeds.

I plan on switching to Waze but am curious about what might be a better strategy.

Please note that I am not trying to evade the system or to aggressively drive at the maximum legal speed. I simply wouldn't keep driving at 60kmh while all cars overtake me at 100, because I've missed a posted speed.

Pre-emptively replaced tire patch kit?

I always carry an old school patch kit (glue + a set of rubber patches) that I never actually use. I very rarely get flats (< 1 or year), and carry spare tubes and instant patches.

This being said I'll be traveling in an area where bike shops are few and far in between.

Question is: at what interval do you purchase a fresh vulcanizing glue? Or put differently, what is the shelf life of an unopened tube?

How to ignite a siphon alcohol stove (ex: Toaks , Likada)

[Likely back to alcohol because 100g gas canisters may not be available at a planned destination]

Options seem to be (somewhat in decreasing order of convenience):

  1. Plasma lighter (rectangular with retractable extension)
  2. Butane torch lighter
  3. Exotac Titan or Zippo + wick (dipped into alcohol first)
  4. Permanent match (striker + wick stored in a container filled with lighter fuel)
  5. Mini-bic + wick
  6. Fire rod/flint ligther + wick
  7. Matches

Any suggestion/comment?

Backpacking gas canister availability in Brazil

Oi.

I'll bikepack the Mata Atlantica starting in Petropolis. Where can I purchase ISO (screw on) gas canisters? Ideally 100-110g (Jetboil type). 220-230g in a pinch would do.

Obrigado

Purchased a Dura, didn't try it on trails yet.

Editing the "road bike" activity pages, I was surprised by the absence of "Distance to end" and "ETA" data fields. It looks as if this info may be displayed by default on the full-screen MAP page, but is undocumented and I find vague/contradictory statements on this.

----

I'll use the DURA to navigate new-to-me courses.

I plan on one screen with arrow over mapped background and a second screen with a few metrics (time of day, time to sunset, DTE, ETA, next-turn indicator -- so I know when to switch to map display). I use a Bontrager Ridetime Elite to display speed/cadence/hr -- battery lasts for months.

If you are familiar with the Dura, I'd like to hear about how you use it.
