Living with my high school friend ruined my year
My fucking roommate/flatmate is seriously pissing me off. It’s been a year living together and honestly I can’t even imagine staying with her any longer. We were friends in high school, got into the same college, and decided to live together, which turned out to be the worst decision of my life.
Before moving, my family warned me that some people will weaponize racism anytime they’re called out for bad behavior, and I ignored it because I thought they were overreacting. But after this entire experience I honestly understand why they said that.
Her uncle lived in the same city we were moving to, so he “helped” us find a place. The place was absolutely disgusting — mold problems, leakage, heat, horrible ventilation — and we STILL had to pay brokerage. On top of that, he bought huge expensive utensils and household stuff himself without consulting my family at all, and later I found out most of it was because my roommate’s siblings were supposed to eventually come live with us. The funniest part is she had originally told me she’d stay with ME until I finished my course, then suddenly after everything was finalized she dropped the “btw my siblings might move in too” bomb. I immediately decided I’d move out eventually.
And the room situation was insane. Apparently I got the “better” room because it was bigger, but it had no window, no airflow, nothing. That room was so hot and moldy I genuinely suffered there for six months while she acted like it wasn’t a big deal.
Then after we went back home and returned, we started looking for a new place. Her uncle again acted like he’d help, but all he really did was send some random person while WE did all the actual work. Honestly my boyfriend helped more than anyone during the whole moving process. But she acts like her uncle is some savior doing everything for us when he mostly just stands around and watches.
Now in the new apartment I got the room with the balcony, which she had literally promised me earlier when we were searching. And now she constantly complains about how hot her room is as if I didn’t suffer in a moldy oven for months in the first apartment.
She also never cleans. She leaves the sink dirty, leaves kitchen mess everywhere, doesn’t clean shared spaces, and today she crossed the line by dumping dirt and trash into MY area. I’m genuinely done.
At first I was considerate. I even mostly had my boyfriend over when she was in class because I didn’t want to disturb her. But after months of her acting messy and inconsiderate, I stopped caring.
She also made a huge deal claiming my cooking gave her “allergies,” yet magically now she’s suddenly fine around the same food. At this point it honestly feels like she just looks for ways to torment me or complain about everything.
And what annoys me even more is how fake she acts. She constantly acts like she comes from some super privileged amazing family and talks about things that genuinely sound exaggerated or made up. She thinks every guy is looking at her, constantly acts self-important, and keeps talking about me and my boyfriend and our relationship to her mom instead of minding her own business. Meanwhile she can’t even talk openly about her own situationships or exes.
She once told me her mom used to beat her for “no reason” as a kid, but after living with her I genuinely feel like there had to be more to those stories because she is unbelievably difficult to live with.
I seriously cannot wait to move out because I’m mentally exhausted living with someone this messy, dramatic, and inconsiderate.
