First-person books with a slow-building, dark, eerie atmosphere & horror/supernatural elements
I just finished dark matter by Michelle Paver, it wasn't perfect, but overall I would say I enjoyed it. Looking for something similar, written in first-person or epistolary prose, with similar supernatural/ghost/horror vibes, but maybe something that leans more heavily into those themes than dark matter does.
I would prefer historical settings (dark matter is set in 1937) but I'm open to any setting
I also plan to read her book Thin Air soon as well

looking for books where normal, good people end up making bad decisions (i.e murder & other crimes) and everything spirals out of control after that. thinking a similar vein to fargo series/movie & a simple plan (I've watched the movie and read the book)
