I was planning to bring a small carry on, wear a waist bag with my documents and phone and check a bag with everything for hiking the w including my pack. I was thinking a 50L would probably work best since I’m only bringing my quilt, clothes, toiletries and snacks. I’ll be flying with Delta into Santiago and then the next day heading into Puerto Natales. Does anyone know if Latam has a lot of flights on weekends? This will be last weekend in February. It’s either that or I take the bus instead. I am concerned that if i do end up losing my checked bag, much of my needed items would need to be replaced. I will have great insurance but that doesn’t help when your entire trip is disrupted. What does everyone else do to make sure they end up with everything they need.

I’m planning to hike in Patagonia next March. I figured out that there are non stop flights from Miami into Santiago so I applied for the Delta sky miles Amex. I’ve already earned the 50k intro miles. My issue is whether I should just book this with Latam airlines since the flights are all through them. I would love to book a flight that stops in Santiago and continues straight through to Puerto Natales but I am seeing that Latam often will change their flight schedule last minute and I don’t want to add even more variables to a very difficult overnight trip. I’ve never been able to sleep on any plane even when I’ve flown first class, the bumpiness always freaks me out. I will be staying overnight in Miami to be able to get to the airport on time. When I try to use my miles and cash to book through Delta the non stop flight isn’t offered. When I try to book just in economy it won’t allow me to upgrade to a seat with more legroom on the Delta app. If I try the same flight using the Latam app, I am able to (cash not miles) book Premium Economy which I would hope would enable me to try to sleep. I also need to be on the aisle due to having to run to the bathroom more often due to my age. I’m fine with just booking the international leg of this trip and booking the SA end a few weeks before when schedules are more set. What should I do???
