the ideal gold color

i recently got the gen 4 oura ring and was a little disappointed to see that the gold variant in person was a lot more brassy/costumey than i expected - especially as a strictly gold jewelry wearer. i did fall in love with the brushed silver which is what i ended up getting!

as an arts and crafts girly that owns a cricut, i experimented with permanent adhesive gold foil vinyl to see if i could make a thin wrap/cover to defend against everyday scuff, results are pictured :^) feeling very pleased with myself, the wrap job isn’t perfect but i have time to practice LOL. i did also order some thicker silicone covers for the ring when i lift weights in the gym, but i like that the vinyl i put on is thin, not bulky at all. i also ordered some thin clear strips i found on amazon to apply on top of the gold vinyl as an extra measure of security.

just thought i’d share my DIY attempt for when i want the look of a nicer yellow gold on my ring! (don’t mind my non-model hands)

edit: how i made this! (hopefully this makes sense)
originally i was going to use my cricut to cut exact measurements but i was lazy, so for my first trial run, i just eyeballed the vinyl. i cut the vinyl a little wider than the width of the ring - but not so wide that it wouldn’t fit onto the charger.

i carefully wrapped the ring with the strip of vinyl i cut. the sides of the strip extended past the edge of the ring, so then i pushed down the edges of the vinyl to wrap around the curved edges of the ring.

i had seen a tiktok where they wrapped the oura ring with car vinyl or ppf film and used a heat gun, so i tried using my hair dryer to heat up the extended edge of the vinyl to make it easier to mold around the curved edges of the ring - but i don’t think i heated it long enough because throughout today the vinyl has been lifting up a bit and not laying smoothly like i wanted it to.

this is what the lifting looks like today

i was just afraid of overheating and damaging the ring LOL but i may try using my hair dryer again to smoothen it out.

i think on my next trial runs i will try to get exact measurements and cut the vinyl using my cricut! i read online that some people also used washi tape to wrap their rings, but YMMV because i think the washi tape is just decorative and won’t protect against scuffs much.

what i used
- the vinyl that i used was a gold foil permanent adhesive vinyl sheet that i got at my hobby store so i didn’t actually use the cricut brand; i think the brand was called “four oh five”. it worked just fine, was only like $1.50 for the sheet, and the color was the shade of gold that i liked. the permanent adhesive vinyls are not actually super permanent so it’s easy to remove from my ring without residue! i also have cricut gold foil vinyl so i might try that one too, but honestly there are so many different patterns of vinyl, the possibilities are endless
- i bought these strips from amazon to wrap around the vinyl layer just as an extra measure of security
