Convince me that the New GR86>MX-5

I understand everyone’s situation is different. Spare me the, BUy tHE CaR YOU WAnT lectures.

I love both the GR86 and the MX-5 platform, though I have only owned an ND1 Miata, and have only test driven a BRZ tS. I want someone to try to convince me that the GR86 is a better buy than a new ND3 Miata.

For me, I do not go to the track at this time. I would like to try it out, but I don’t live close enough to one to make that a major factor when making my decision. I do enjoy spirited riding through the backroads near me. They aren’t particularly technical or twisty, so the best of the best steering may not be totally necessary? I do like nice steering though of course. I’m just not next to canyon roads where I live.

I like the idea of putting my kids in the car with me, but the rear seats seem so impractical that I’m not sure if it will really work. One of mine is 6, and in a forward facing but may go to a standard booster soon. My others are larger. For size context, one is a teen and the other going into middle school next year. I am 5’10”. Would we make it work? Obviously not for road tripping or as a family commuter, but my Miata can only bring one other person in it besides myself. Is riding together in a GR86 feasible for short drives? It would be rare that we all get in, but maybe my 6y.o plus one more in the front?

For anyone that went ND Miata-GR86, were you disappointed in anything after switching? I’d love to hear from that crowd.

I fear my family may be too old and large at this point to consider the rear seats as a win over the MX-5 outside of it just being more storage space.

I also worry I’ll miss my soft top of course.
