Just finished season 1. Vince Gilligan is a unique guy.

Just finished Pluribus, season 1 and I can't help but notice Vince Gilligan does something with character development/arc that I just don't see elsewhere, at least not in the same way. I'm probably late to the party on this, and maybe it's been thoroughly discussed already, but it just hit me, so here goes.

I think most people when they watch media look for themselves in the story. Who do I side with? Whose decisions do I agree with? Who am I rooting for? His stuff just messes with that whole dynamic. Breaking Bad took a character I was completely sympathetic too, made me side with him long after I should have, and ultimately became kind of irredeemable and needed to die. Better Call Saul took a character that was fun, but insubstantial and meaningless, and ultimately created a character I really had empathy for and cared about.

When I first started Pluribus, I kept thinking "Am I supposed to be rooting for her? She's got borderline personality disorder, she's an emotional toddler. Christ, make the best of it". By the end of the season I'm like, "Yeah, she's right. We gotta' burn it down".

It's like Gilligan makes the plot secondary, and the character arc primary. It's very interesting stuff.
