NCD got changed to unprotected - Insurance said they can't change it back

I added my sibling to my account for multi-car insurance, so I have been communicating on his behalf about details. When his insurance started on my account, he said they made a mistake with the NCD about the number of years so I had to talk to them to update the details. I thought it was sorted at that point, but in hindsight, I should've checked EVERYTHING. Because my dad then went through the details and told me they changed his status from protected to unprotected when they updated the the number of years for his NCD. I tried calling them to see if I could get it changed, but they said that since it was past the 14 day "cooling period" they couldn't and if I did want it to be protected, I would have to start a whole new insurance, and that it would also affect my insurance too (I'm not sure what was meant by that besides that I may have to redo my insurance with them too?).

I understand that this was carelessness on my part, but I'm also miffed that the insurance company messed it up in the first place. I was thinking of just biting the bullet and restarting the whole insurance thing again, but I just wanted to know if its possible that I don't have to go through that. Does anyone else have a similar experience?
