[Texas] How can I prevent a high risk driver (non-custodial parent) from using my daughter’s car that I insure?

UPDATE: Thank you all for the insight and advice to my situation. I’m going to drive my daughter to the visit and pick her up afterward. That removes any risk involving the car or my insurance and, more importantly, avoids putting her in the position of having to withhold the keys from her mother. I do not want to create more anxiety for any of my children. Appreciate all the perspectives! Vibes with the insurance agency once they returned my call.

Location: Texas

I have a teenage daughter who is insured under my policy. Her mother has three prior DWI convictions and does not own or insure the vehicle my daughter drives.

My children have not seen their mother in about three years, but they will be meeting her for dinner for a couple of hours. Because of their mother’s history and past issues with respecting boundaries, I’m concerned that she might pressure my daughter into allowing her to drive the vehicle.

I plan to make it very clear to my daughter that nobody else has permission to drive it. However, I want to understand how to protect myself legally and financially if her mother drives it anyway. The concerns around manipulating my daughter and giving into pressure or she takes the keys without my permission.

My father-in-law previously had a minor accident while driving my SUV, and the resulting insurance consequences were significant. I am talking $400/mo difference. Therefore, my questions are:

  1. Under Texas law, could my insurance be responsible if my daughter’s mother drives the vehicle without my permission and causes an accident?
  2. Should I ask my insurer to specifically exclude her as a driver, even though she does not live in my household?
  3. Would a written notice stating that she does not have permission to drive any of my vehicles help protect me?
  4. Are there any other reasonable steps I should take before the visit?

I’m only seeking advice about protecting myself and my insurance coverage. I understand that I should also speak directly with my insurance agent or an attorney.

Marshmallow car insurance suddenly cancelling my policy due to a "Risk Indicator" — what should I do?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice because I’ve received a worrying email from Marshmallow today.

I took out a Marshmallow car insurance policy on 24 July 2026. Everything I provided when getting the quote and taking out the policy was accurate to the best of my knowledge. I haven't changed any of the relevant details since taking out the policy, and I have never had an insurance policy cancelled before.

I’m on the Go Lightest plan.

Marshmallow asked me to give the app permission to track/share my driving data, and I have complied with every request they've sent me.

Today, I received an email saying they are cancelling my policy. The cover will end at 11:59pm on 26 August 2026.

The worrying part is that they say:

>

They then refer to their "Driving Data and Open Banking Data" policy wording and say they have identified a "Risk Indicator".

However, they haven't actually told me what information they believe was false or what the Risk Indicator is.

I've contacted Marshmallow asking them to explain.

I've not cancelled the policy myself, because their email says if I cancel it myself before 26 August, there's a £75 cancellation fee and I wouldn't need to declare that cancellation to future insurers. If Marshmallow cancels it, I understand the situation may be different when applying for future insurance.

My main questions are:

1. Has anyone experienced this with Marshmallow, particularly the "Risk Indicator" wording?

2. What could a Risk Indicator from driving data actually mean?

3. Should I make a formal complaint now, or wait for Marshmallow to explain the reason first?

4. Should I start looking for alternative insurance immediately, or wait to see whether Marshmallow reverses the decision?

I'm particularly concerned about how this cancellation could affect future insurance applications if I haven't actually provided any false information.

Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated.

Crash today

Today my grandpa (71) has been is a 3 car crash. But his front is damaged a lot and one of the other car has a small wingMirror damage. Then a van we are unsure as they were shouting and saying that he was speeding driving all over the road.

What can we do?
We’ve told insurance but it’s all very complicated.

Ty for help!

Edit:

The van driver did drive off without giving us their insurance. Only got a name. We suspect they may of hit our car. But no dashcam footage

Edit 2:

Sent the Insurnace some photos of the car, they emailed back saying they can repair it. I know that can change. The car is at 56k miles and it’s a 72 plate Crossland. So only worth about 8-10k.

Help please U.K.

Hi, my Tesla model s car was hit whilst stationary in the passenger front door and wing. Now I’m being told there is a fault with the rear passenger door function (window/handle) but unrelated and not covered. All worked perfectly fine prior to damage incurred. Any tips? Blokes insurance trying to avoid paying this as saying unrelated.

New driver with with incredibly high quotes

Hello everyone, i have my test in october and im on track to be passing first time. I had money saved up to buy a nice cheap car but then I was given a 16.L 2011 Mazda 3 TS2. We have been looking at insurance and had quotes around 5-8k for a year. How is anyone expected to pay this? especially an 18year old. I am unemployed and desperately searching for a job but the market is fucked lol.

I understand that its so high because im a new driver and its a 1.6L but still??? There must be a way to make this cheaper (I am looking into the pass plus scheme as well)

Is anyone able to give some advice?

Hastings App

I just got insured with Hastings as an 18year old first time driver and it required a blackbox but it hasnt been delivered yet and I just have the app, my car has a turbo and I have gone like 22 in 20s here and there and its only the first day, im worried because I cannot afford to have my insurance cancelled, can the app tell this or am I ok until the actual blackbox gets delivered?

EDIT: RIight just to be clear since everyone thinks from my post that I drive reckless, I dont. I just havnt fully gotten used to my car yet, its only a 1.2 but it can be fast which isnt me trying to brag but its different than alot of my friends 1ltires, when I say 22-23 in a 20 I mean a blip over when pulling off or when driving in a 20 for a long time, when I spot the speed I let my engine slow down to 20 immediately and I am very cautious about my insurance and have no intention of driving stupid. Also with the acceleration I mean going from 0-11ish and going from 20s to 30s which still isnt good but its just something I need to work on, Im just worried they will use this data from my first day having the app without the blackbox delivered yet and im just worried.

NCD got changed to unprotected - Insurance said they can't change it back

I added my sibling to my account for multi-car insurance, so I have been communicating on his behalf about details. When his insurance started on my account, he said they made a mistake with the NCD about the number of years so I had to talk to them to update the details. I thought it was sorted at that point, but in hindsight, I should've checked EVERYTHING. Because my dad then went through the details and told me they changed his status from protected to unprotected when they updated the the number of years for his NCD. I tried calling them to see if I could get it changed, but they said that since it was past the 14 day "cooling period" they couldn't and if I did want it to be protected, I would have to start a whole new insurance, and that it would also affect my insurance too (I'm not sure what was meant by that besides that I may have to redo my insurance with them too?).

I understand that this was carelessness on my part, but I'm also miffed that the insurance company messed it up in the first place. I was thinking of just biting the bullet and restarting the whole insurance thing again, but I just wanted to know if its possible that I don't have to go through that. Does anyone else have a similar experience?

Need advice with a car finance company.

Okay so I'm currently 38 years old and living in the UK. I live alone but I'm currently unemployed and registered as having disabilities.

My mother recently passed away but she had a car left on finance. The car finance company has given options with what to do with it. Option 1 and 2 is to buy the car or take over the finance. I cant afford either and I also don't drive.

Option 3 is to have them auction the car and any shortfall will be taken out of my mother's estate, aka her house which I'm currently living in and will likely own, I say likely as my mother did not leave a will, she also didn't have anything else of value and didn't have life insurance or leave any money behind.

Option 3 seems like my only option but I'm worried about how it will turn out. There's still quite a lot of money left to pay on my deceased mother's car finance and even a small shortfall could cost thousands. Any advice on what to do about this matter would be much appreciated as it has left me feeling very anxious and stressed.

Low insurance quote after points

so I’ve just got points on my license (9) after starting a new driving job despite having a clean driving license ever since I’ve started driving which is 6 years now.

I’m with Hastings direct you drive which has a black box and thought after these points my premium would sky rocket. However it’s gone down roughly £100 as I started a new quote to see how much it would be after the points were actually on my license.

Has anybody else ever had this? I also called Hastings as to whether it was worth cancelling my current insurance as there’s roughly 2 months left until it renews now. This would mean paying a cancellation fee and losing this years NCD, but would this make sense to pay £600 for another year or wait unril my renewal comes in but it may double in price or even more?

Temporary cover for a family visitor from Australia.

I'm running out of options to find temporary cover for my brother who is visiting from Australia.

Although he still holds a UK passport his driving licence is Australian and, to complicate things, he's 72 years old.

I have tried my own insurer, Liverpool Victoria plus the likes of Dayinsure, GoShorty etc without luck.

Do you have any suggestions please?

EU Driving License - UK insurance renewal

I have been in the UK for about 12 years with 8 year no claim (wasn't driving the first years).

I have had my driving license for 19 years total.

For the last few years my insurance has been around £350.

Now I cannot find anything for less than £400 (Admiral). Even recievrd a £900 quote from a Churchill. Compare the market (always been using them) quotes start from £500.

I'm assuming this has to do with my EU licence. Nothing unusual in the add-ons (breakdown cover, 8000 miles a year, courtesy car, PI £5k cover. No windscreen cover...)

In curious.

Have all of you seen an increase on their insurance? Or is it link to foreign EU licenses?

speeding and driving without insurance

Hello everyone. I am deeply sorry about this situation. I already hold a motorcycle license from my home country, so upon arriving in the UK, I applied for a provisional license and planned to take the CBT course so I could ride a bike for errands and commuting. Unfortunately, I bought the scooter before completing the CBT; I had simply kept it at home unused. A few days ago, an urgent matter arose, and I hastily rode the scooter without having the CBT or insurance (but i have road tax, mot and V5C). To make matters worse, the speedometer was broken—something I was unaware of because I had bought the bike second-hand. Consequently, when I entered a 30mph zone, I simply followed the car ahead of me, matching its speed. I was horrified when, two days later, I received a police notice based on speed camera footage stating I had been traveling at 36mph in a 30mph zone. I am an international student and am currently in a state of extreme distress; I did not intend to break the law—it was an emergency, and I didn't know the speedometer of scooter was faulty. What should I do now? Will this affect my visa status? If I plead guilty to speeding, will they demand proof of insurance or a CBT certificate? I would appreciate your advice—please don't criticize me, as it was an urgent situation at the time.

Dealership damaged my car while in for service and is paying for repairs - should I still inform my insurer? (UK)

Hi everyone, looking for some advice on how to handle an insurance question in the UK.

I dropped my car off at a main dealer for a simple dashcam installation. When I went to collect it, I discovered significant bodywork damage (dents, scratches, and paint damage on the side panels, wheel arch, and rear door) that happened while the car was in their care.

The dealership admitted fault (their valeting team damaged it while moving the vehicle), and they have arranged to repair everything at their own official approved bodyshop at no cost to me, along with providing a courtesy car.

My question is: Should I still inform my own car insurance company about this incident?

I am not looking to make a claim since the dealership is paying directly, and I am not aware if they are using their trade insurance to cover the cost of the damage.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has been in a similar situation or knows how the UK insurers' process works. Thanks!

Would my insurance be very high?

My friend is getting rid of his old car soon and I am thinking about buying it. It’s a 67 Plate Audi A6, 3.0L Twin Turbo V6 Diesel. It does have Quattro, so hopefully no binning it around wet corners. Only considering it because it’s a nice car and will be cheap for me to own.

Passed my test 3 months ago, haven’t bought a car as yet so this would be my first insurance policy. 23 Years Old, Civil Servant. Is the insurance going to be ridiculous?

How are these practices legal?

Found cheaper car insurance, so I went to cancel last year’s policy with Aviva.

Clicked to cancel the renewal twice, then I get another page offering me a discount, with ‘accept offer’ highlighted as the obvious choice, rather than the option that would actually complete the cancellation.

I’ve already clicked multiple times to confirm that cancelling is my intention. Are there any guidelines or laws around this kind of design, or should there be?

I can only imagine how many older or vulnerable people end up clicking ‘accept offer’ without realising they’re effectively backing out of the cancellation.

It feels like the usual principles of good UX design have been flipped on their head here - making the option that benefits Aviva the easiest and most prominent choice, rather than the one the customer has repeatedly said they want.

Do the people of the internet want to weigh in on this?

Winns Solicitors - Non Fault claim - FEES England

Hi,

My partner a month ago had a learner driver reverse into her car, small scrape down the side of the vehicle. She googled direct line accident helpline where she then called the number at the time thought she was dealing with direct line however it was not, it was Winn solicitors (who she thought was acting on behalf of them).

They sent the car off to a repair garage, we got a hire car from enterprise & have had it for 27 days.

The repair garage fixed the car but then subsequently went into liquidation, after a fight & multiple calls we managed to get the car back a week later, unhappy with the repair but have said we will deal with this ourselves now as the issue remaining is minor. Technically we should not even have had the hire car for 11 of the 27 days because of the repair garage going into liquidation.

I have just read the agreement from Winn solicitors & am extremely concerned about the hire car charges x the amount of days we have had this car. It amounts to over £9000!!!!

The solicitors fees are £350/hour.

i am taking the car back to enterprise As soon as they open tomorrow.

i have just read similar threads regarding this & have seen the at fault insurers will likely dispute or refuse to pay for these charges as they are extremely excessive!

She has not yet even signed the credit agreement with Winn as it was in her junk folder & has only recently just seen this, we originally thought this was all part of direct line insurance with courtesy car etc.

I would assume if she does not sign this she will be liable for ALL costs regarding this claim but am reluctant too yet as dont want to put her in a locked agreement of some sorts.

What is the likelyhood of having to not pay for these extortionate fees whether we sign or not & is there any way out of this?

Aware she should have been more diligent on sourcing the correct telephone no. etc
The repairs were minor & no personal injury. But am worried we will have to go broke trying to get this sorted all because of some company has paid to have a number come up first on google!

Anyone been through this & what was the outcome?

Thanks

car insurance

Does anyone know what car insurance base your quote on these days? my friend is getting quoted £70pm for a car with same size engine as mine and slightly newer, and i have to pay £220pm. I’ve been driving for over 3 years now and she’s a first time driver. I had a small crash when I first passed but even when I don’t include it I get quoted around £180pm. I have put my mileage down to 4000 as I don’t have to drive to work so it’s for social use only. Does anyone know if there’s anything else I could do?

Quotemehappy Connect cancelling my insurance while I'm abroad – advice urgently needed

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with Quotemehappy Connect/Aviva or a similar telematics policy.

I’m a newish driver with a Connect policy and am currently on a European road trip with my girlfriend, who is a named driver on my policy. We have been sharing the driving.

I received a Red (bad) driver rating, followed by another Red rating, and have now been told my insurance will be cancelled (currently active, but received a text and email saying they will be with more information to come)

The important point is that, looking at my Connect scores, the only category showing Red is "Usage". My other driving scores are very good, with several at 100.

I contacted Quotemehappy because I suspected my girlfriend's driving was being recorded against me. They confirmed in writing that when another driver is driving, their journey is still recorded against my rating if my phone is in the vehicle.

This is exactly what has been happening – my phone is normally in the car and connected for Bluetooth/Google Maps while my girlfriend drives.

I've repeatedly contacted them asking how this should be handled, whether her journeys can be identified/reviewed and whether my rating can be reconsidered. Unfortunately, I've received slow/partial responses and haven't had these questions properly answered. They say they respond with In 24 hours but never have.

I'm now in Slovenia, still on the road trip, and have been told my insurance will be cancelled. I also informed them about the European trip before purchasing their European Breakdown Cover specifically through them as well.

I've tried email, their online system and telephone, but I'm repeatedly being directed back to the online service.

Does anyone know:

-A number/department where I can actually speak to someone about a cancellation?

- How I can formally escalate this?

- Whether anyone has successfully had a Quotemehappy Connect cancellation reviewed?

- Whether there is anything else I should be doing while I'm abroad?

I’m particularly worried about being left abroad without valid insurance when I've been actively trying to resolve this with them.

Any advice would be massively appreciated.

Ps yes I used chatgbt to help we write this, but it's a bit of a stressful situation so wanted to get it all together.

Thanks in advance for any help.
