Car insurance recommendations?

Hello everyone! My family will be relocating to Scotland this month and part of our to-do list is to get a new car and car insurance. We will only have our U.S. licenses for a while.

Which companies would you recommend and why?

Car insurance - incorrect claim

I recently took out a policy with 1st Central Car Insurance and upon taking out the policy, they asked me for a ‘period of cover letter’ from my insurer, presumably as I had declared a claim on my record of 01/08/24 and they wanted proof of this. At the same time, they provided details of my previous claim on the insurance database (which was actually 07/09/2024, not the date 01/08/2024 that I’d mistakenly put when I took out the policy).

I confirmed my error and that the claim should only be that on 07/09/2024. Since then however, they have emailed back to include both the 01/08 and 07/09 claim on my record, and requested me to pay an additional £390 for this.

I have attempted to resolve this by email, stating that I confirm only the 07/09 claim, but they are now saying I need a ‘period of cover’ letter from my previous insurer (Aviva) which I cannot access from my previous documents. I have requested this from Aviva again but they have just provided my NCD letter which doesn’t contain the details that 1st Central apparently want.

I have until the end of tomorrow (07/07) to pay up, or supply the period of cover letter, or they will cancel my policy.

What would you recommend I do in this situation? I am considering cancelling the policy myself and taking out a new one entirely, but am I going to come across the same issue? I don’t want my insurance to be cancelled but am concerned if I pay now, then I am effectively ‘admitting’ that the 01/08 claim is valid, even though it was my mistake in the first place and no such claim exists. Any suggestions very much welcomed!

Named driver claim question

-edit- thanks for the clarification everyone

Hi,

Just a question I have - I have my mum as a named driver on my policy (since she retired its not worth her having her own car when I wfh half the week). If she is involved in an accident and needs to make a claim - will this afect my no claims as the policy holder?

No issues with her driving or anything just genuinely curious

Renewal on Hasting direct you drive.

I am due to renew my car insurance. New driver this was my first policy with one fault accident.

Hasting direct you drive (blackbox), the current company I am with, offered a renewal price of £703.68 with the removal of the blackbox.

However on quidco and compare the market, SAME details im getting quoted £664, with £45 cash back on quidco. All with the same company.

I am a bit stuck as what to do. Do I pay the extra and have no blackbox? If I go with quidco and get a fresh policy will hasting offer me no blackbox as I have previously held a 97 average score?

Or should I call up and see if they would honour the quote price I received on quidco/compare the market?

Never go direct to third party

A vehicle reversed and hit my stationary vehicle in a car park, I was in the car when it happened; exited the vehicle, spoke to third party, refused to provide details, called the police; they attempted to take the phone off me and then panicked and got in their car and drove off.

I reported it to the police; days went by and my car suffered issues in the cabin (vibrations) on idle and reverse, the issue arose from the low speed collision to my rear.

I later found out my engine mount was cracked.

I contacted MiB and obtained the third party police details and contacted their insurance.

Informed them of the situation and they accepted liability immediately, which I found odd..

They recommended their own approved garage, I checked them out and wasn’t satisfied based on the negative reviews.

So I opted to use my own garage, so I contacted BMW accident management service (as I have a BMW) and expected BMW to do a good job considering the engine mount was cracked.

BMW accepted my claim after sending the dash cam, they didn’t ask any questions in relation to the damaged area and if I had aftermarket parts (maxton kit).

Asked me if my car was drivable: I said yes but due to high vibration incabin im worried driving it would cause more damage to the vehicle; so they opted to use a recovery service (unbeknown to me this would be charged to me directly later)

They took the vehicle, had it checked over, contacted IMS who was dealing with the claim, awaiting response and then suddenly I get an email stating:

“Please be advised that we are no longer able to proceed with this claim and therefore we have closed our file. The claim is now being passed back to your policy underwriter to take over.”

So I contacted IMS who then informed me BMW can’t do anything as my parts are aftermarket and they’ve closed the claim, in the meantime I had a vehicle from enterprise that they provided.

I had to then go to BMW to pay £150 to release my vehicle otherwise they’d of kept my vehicle hostage and charged me for storage fees if not paid.

I then on the same day had to go to hospital due to a surgical operation which made me invalidated for a week, during which time I still had the vehicle and was unable to return it (the hire vehicle).

When I eventually returned it: I then contacted third party insurance and they then denied liability, due to insured driver say so.

I then sent the dash cam, waited: few days later, accepted, day after, refused, then waited for file handler to view the dash cam, accepted again.

I then sent images of the damage and report I made regarding the issues I’ve had since the accident specifically the engine mount / cabin vibration on idle and reverse, they denied a low speed impact can cause this, in fact their underwriter called me a few days later and says it’s impossible for a “welded” engine mount to crack (he claims he has 16 years experience) but is uneducated as he’s unaware the engine mount is bolted and not welded.

He then refused to deal with me and told me to go through my own insurance.

So now I rang my insurance; told them about third party accident and mentioned I had dash cam of the incident, they immediately accepted the claim and waived the excess.

Told me enterprise will arrange the hire vehicle: except I spoke to enterprise and they’re unable to provide a vehicle due to the initial claim by BMW Accident management service.

This has been the most stressful situation I’ve had to go through, I’ve had two previous claims (both stationary) non fault incidents and both were dealt with easily by direct line group without any frustration.

But on this occasion it’s beaten me, personally I would never try to deal with it myself ever again and go directly to my own insurance.

— most of the headache could of been avoided by BMW if they asked me initially if I had aftermarket parts so they can refuse the claim based on that they can’t repair aftermarket parts, but nah, they proceeded made me go through all this and racked up a £1200 credit hire bill.

Just for reference the third party insurance is Tesco, the customer service is the worst I’ve had to deal with; the staff are very rude and the underwriters are clearly incompetent considering he thinks my engine mount is welded 😂

Young Drivers

My eldest is doing their driving test soon so will be looking to go out and purchase their first car. While I appreciate insurance will not be cheap are there any makes / models that will be less expensive to ensure compared to others.

England - father in law failed to notify us of driving endorsments

As above. Its come to light F-I-L failed to notify us he has 2x sp50 endorsements on his license when hes a named driver on insurance with him showing 0 points on this.

I assume we notify the insurer immediately. Or do we remove him as a named driver?

We were lied to and not informed of any endorsements and acted faithfully when competing the driving insurance forms.

I cannot have a cancelled car insurance on file as this is something completely beyond our control 😫

Rear ended and third party denies liability UK insurance

hi all - I was rear ended whilst my vehicle was at a complete stop back in Feb. driver was on phone and wasnt looking, I couldn’t move forward as there was a car in front of me turning right. Third party immediately apologised, asked for my number and asked to settle out of insurance and to pay for my vehicle repairs. I had to go through insurance as my vehicle is a lease car at work. my insurer does not cover injury claims so I’ve had to chase the cost of some whiplash claims myself through the government portal (official injury claim) however despite submitting my evidence (images of rear end damage, him texting me apologising and admitting fault and trying to track me down to repair my car, images that show his version of events aren’t possible) they’ve denied liability each time and now I’ve got to proceed to court. He’s alleged I pulled out and he had to emergency brake to try and avoid me by swerving to right but he couldn’t. My damage to my vehicle is rear left and central and the garage who repaired my car have confirmed the damages are consistent from central rear impact but they continue to deny liability. I’ve been told this is normal and they’ll dig in all the way to the end but I’m so confused how they can even deny liability when he’s rear ended me? Am I likely to win this in court as they’ve only provided his statement as their evidence and nothing to counter my reports, images, GPS yet feeling very confused as representing myself

Had an accident

Hi all,
For context November last year I had an accident and decided to go through a third party for the whole accident claim and damages etc instead of my own actual insurance. I was then put in a courtesy car which I drove for around a month. I got the payout from the third party company as a non prejudice result even though the case was still going on (it still is) and hasn’t been settled yet. I’ve just received an email from them last week saying that it might turn out to be a 50/50 split fault which means I owe them half the money I was given (they gave me £12k for my car being completely written off). I’m confused about this like? Why should I pay £6k for that? I should’ve just gone through my own insurance at that point… I was fully comprehensive and they’re still asking for £6k?? I don’t get this. Someone please explain what’s happening as I’m very confused. Whole reason to have insurance is to not end up in situations like these am I right? Shouldn’t my insurance pay for that?

Will My Car Be A Write Off?

A skip lorry reversed and hit our car yesterday. They’ve admitted full liability and it’s being sorted with our insurances. We already have a courtesy car and the car got towed last night as our insurers said with the hole and sharp edges it could not stay on the road outside our house.

We are just wondering if the car will be write off or if they can replace the door and sill and we will get it back? Suzuki Vitara 40k miles 2019 .

Thanks for any help!

Lexham insurance issues

I’m not sure what to do my policy is being cancelled by Lexham insurance due to my direct debit not being set up, however I had originally set it up and they took first payment and after that no payments I received a phone call about 2 months ago and it was briefly ended after I had been informed that my payments haven’t been going through. Ever since I’ve tried to contact millions of times, callback request, calling and even sending emails not 1 response. I’ve called them about 20 times no joke and sat hours waiting on hold to them to never get put through to one of their agents. Am I liable for anything , will this affect my future insurance policies and how can I deal with this because I cannot physically do anything nor send any payment unless Lexham are in contact with me. I’ve received an automated email today from Lexham informing me my policy has been cancelled and I don’t want it to be cancelled I’d like to continue insuring my Forza 125 as I commute around London all the time. What do I genuinely do and could I possibly be taken to court for this or can I take them to court I don’t know… please help😖

Better to have seperate insurance or multi car?

My partner is starting to learn to drive soon and we've been lucky enough to have be given a small car for her (Twingo). I've been driving 13+ years but she'll be starting off on a provisional, i have my own car. Would it be better to have her own insurance for it? or would it be better to have Multi-Car insurance? (We would like to start building her NCD asap) She'll also be the one driving her car the most (I'll be passenger)

Hastings first year nearly done. 1.5 litre. 19 years old

Today I got an email saying I got a new quote for my insurance my first year insurance ends on the 30 July. Just wanted to know if my first year is £2,500 with black box and now I got quoted £700 for second year with 1 no claim discount my black box score has always been 95-100. Is this normal to happen because this is a huge decrease in price? And in the email I got they also said that with my good driving and score that I don’t need a black box.

PPF

Hi all,
My car insurance is due for renewal, and I’m also planning to have Paint Protection Film (PPF) applied to my car. I had a few questions and was hoping someone with experience could help.

Does PPF need to be declared to my insurer? It doesn’t change the car’s colour or performance, so I’m not sure whether it counts as a modification.
If it does need to be declared, what modification category does it fall under? I’ve been getting quotes through comparison websites, but I can’t find a suitable category for PPF and have placed it as ‘Paintwork - Other’.

When I declare it, the quotes increase by around £90 per month, which seems really high for PPF. I’m happy to pay the correct premium if needed, but I’m wondering whether comparison sites just don’t handle this type of modification very well because there’s no obvious category.

Would it be better to contact insurers directly and explain that it’s just PPF rather than selecting a generic modification category?

Sorry if this is a basic question—it’s my first time dealing with PPF, so any advice would be appreciated!

What happens if I had an accident will my no claims go from 15 to 13 or 9 to 7
Really confused. Pls help

Moved house and insurance increased by £400 a month

Small rant, moved to a new property today. Essentially the same situation as before, roadside parking, etc.

Price has gone up to £550 a month, how in the hell am I able to afford that. I'm essentially working the whole time to pay my insurance, and that's before I pay any other bills.

Where do they get off on this 🫠

Edit: house move, Doncaster -> Near Dover (not actually Dover)

Looked on insurance and without some jiggery pockery, most premiums without blackbox are around 3.5k a year

With blackbox I got it back down to £130, so hopefully that'll do and won't go up any lol

My son has been sent a consent and indemnity form to sign

I really need some advice please on what to expect.

End of 2023 my son’s car was stolen from a public car park by a drunk woman who then immediately wrote off a car she crashed into. She left the scene in the car and was quickly stopped and arrested.

Unfortunately my son had left his car keys in the driver’s door pocket! His car was hardly damaged, just a buckled tyre.

We don’t know what came of the court case but today my son has been sent a consent and indemnity form to sign from his old insurance company.

I presume he won’t be covered as he left his keys in his car! What does this mean for him, does he have to cover the loss of the other car from his own pocket? He can’t afford it if he does.

Life can be a bitch sometimes, please share any insights you have and please be gentle! 😬🤪

Admiral little box

i posted a post earlier about queries on speed and late night driving for admiral insurance on a black box and i’m wondering has any drivers been asked for their box sent back early ? i would like to get it off a few months early rather than keeping it for an entire year so what can i do in terms of late night driving speeding breaking etc. to hopefully have my box sent back earlier

For those who have been asked for their box to be sent back earlier

What were your scores roughly ?

how many times a week were you late night driving ?

how many months did you get it off earlier?

Thanks for the help everybody
