Linux on Xbox (Dev Mode) – public release

A hoyhoy,

Here's my two posts regarding my work on the VM. Do not expect it to be lightning fast. Remember, my goal was to use my Xbox as a home server, but also to just see how far I can get to a desktop experience. Running as app/game still gives me the Xbox limit of 5120MB. I got the cursor to work well so far (Thanks u/el_trash_panda!). It is slow, but somewhat usable. I have made a public repo (check the releases page on the repo, have a good read over.) So if anyone want to give a geez, have fun!

XboxVMUpdate

A hoyhoy. Just wanted to show some photos of where I am getting at with my lil project. It can boot a XFCE desktop. Yes, slow but does boot and can open terminal/browser. Linux mouse sends "I moved this far" but Xbox never gets that cleanly. So currently tablet mode fixed that which reports the pointer is at this exact spot, not it moved this far. So the pointer lags a bit behind the Xbox's cursor, but not by a big margin. Only dumb think, is I have to use the Xbox controller, hahah but hey, progress! I am gonna test what someone mentioned which was to rename my package to Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge.<your package name>.

Starting as a game/app still gives me the full Xbox app limit of 5120MB but so far if I go beyond 4096MB it crashes. Have added option to choose bigger virtual disk size. Can change speed settings too (Which is what I'm currently testing).

Xbox VM running Linux

Currently tinkering around making my own VM. Not sure if anyone else is pursuing this. I’ve got a full Linux virtual machine running on my Series X in Dev Mode. It runs QEMU inside a UWP app, and Debian boots to a shell with keyboard input and working internet. It’s slow and limited to about 640 MB of RAM for now, but it works. Next up are installing Debian to a virtual disk and running Plex on it to make it like a home server. Just havin fun, any ideas or thoughts be rad

Anyone else remember seeing these?

Image taken from a counter overseas. But I remember seeing them at our Maccas too. There were bubbles in it and I think if you landed a coin on one of the platforms, you'd win a burger. Platforms were on different level too and much smaller than this photo.

Anyone else remember playing with this while waiting for your order?
