Chasing the Perfect Fingerboard Finish
I’ve been experimenting with different fingerboard finishing methods lately, trying to push the feel beyond the current industry standard. The biggest thing I’ve noticed so far is how much smoother a fully filled and sealed finish can feel compared to the usual thin lacquer-on-wood approach. My latest test finish ended up feeling almost frictionless super consistent, super smooth, and way more “finished” in the hand.
Right now, the tradeoff is appearance. Compared side-by-side with a standard Teak setup, my finish looks a little duller, even though the surface itself is much more uniform. The end goal is a true mirror finish with the same frictionless feel, and I already know the process to get there it just takes a massive amount of extra polishing time. Still, this is probably the most promising experiment I’ve done so far, and I think it’s getting very close to something special.
