Very disappointed with my ASUS ROG repair experience with my G815LW
I bought the laptop (rtx 5080, 32Gb ram, 275hx) on 04/22/2025, and on 05/06/2026 - just about 15 days after the 1-year warranty expired - I started a support chat with ASUS because the laptop suddenly began thermal throttling extremely hard.
Symptoms were:
- CPU instantly hitting 100°C+,
- GPU around 86°C,
- severe throttling,
- fans blowing relatively cool air,
- laptop very hot near the CPU/GPU package.
This strongly pointed to a failed heatsink/vapor chamber issue, so I even wrote directly on the RMA form:
“Please replace heat sink.”
I also explained that I had already changed the thermal paste while troubleshooting, but it made no difference.
ASUS charged me a $170 diagnostic fee, then later claimed:
- motherboard issue,
- damaged thermal module,
- and sent me a $1,777.19 quote for motherboard + thermal module replacement.
The crazy part is:
I have detailed photos taken before shipment showing there was NO physical damage to the thermal module or motherboard before sending the laptop in.
Now I’m being told the thermal module is physically damaged, despite the fact that the damage was not present before shipping.
I only requested replacement of the thermal module because the symptoms clearly pointed to a cooling failure from the beginning. Instead, ASUS immediately jumped to replacing the entire motherboard.
I have now requested:
- replacement of ONLY the thermal module,
- no motherboard replacement.
A high-end ROG laptop failing literally days after warranty expiration is already frustrating enough. Getting hit with a nearly $1800 repair quote afterward is honestly ridiculous.
Has anyone else dealt with something similar from ASUS?
