My deck belt shredded itself the 1st time I got the riding lawnmower out this year. while changing it, I noticed the blade brake wasn’t hooked up to anything. With it installed, it was giving a lot of resistance to me spinning the pulleys by hand so I removed it. Now I’m wondering if it serves any purpose other than safety.

FWIW, I don’t stick hands or feet under the deck with it running. I don’t stick anything under it until it’s up on the lift or my lift table.
