DC native here — built a Metro lock screen widget because nothing on the App Store fit what I wanted

I grew up in Friendship Heights/Tenleytown and rode the Metro most days. Moved to Ballston after college and now ride practically every day. After cycling through every Metro app on the App Store for a couple years, I finally got annoyed enough to build my own. Three things bugged me enough to do it:

The lock screen widgets in other apps only come in the rectangular size that takes up half of the lock screen widget space. I needed my weather rectangular widget and my apartment door square widget so all I had left was space for one square widget.

Also I didn't find one that auto-handled direction. Whether it's morning or evening, you either manually toggle which way you're going or have to see both directions which was annoying.

And lastly on some of the apps the feature I wanted which was literally mainly just a lockscreen widget was gated behind a paywall. My features are free, and also you can now pick between a handful of DC themes widget background with 5-10 more releasing this week!

Built mine and addressed those three. The lock screen widget comes in the small square size. There's a Commute Mode that auto-switches direction based on time of day — pick your morning direction once, set a switchover time like noon or early afternoon, and the widget shows only trains going your way for that half of the day. And core widget functionality isn't gated.

I'll link the app in the comments, curious if anyone has any thoughts or more pain points with current apps. iOS only right now but I am currently working on making it for Android!

Cycled through the established Metro apps for a couple years. They all had something I liked and something I couldn’t get past. These 3 specific things bugged me enough to build my own:

The lock screen widgets only come in the rectangular size. I wanted a small square one that sits next to my weather widget and my door key widget without taking the whole row.

Some of the good widget features are paywalled. On each app, it felt like the lock screen widget which was the whole reason i wanted the app was always behind a subscription.

And lastly none of them auto-handle direction. Whether it’s morning or evening, you either manually toggle or mentally filter trains going the wrong way.

So I built my own and addressed those three things. Lock screen widget comes in the small square size or the rectangular size you can choose. Commute Mode auto-switches direction based on time of day, so you never need to manually switch anything. And the core widget functionality isn’t behind a paywall.

Sharing in case anyone else has the same nitpicks. Would love to hear some feedback or suggestions! Will link in comments
