I feel like a Karen for being upset with the Ashburn metro station

I'm just going to put it out there that my complaint isn't about the dollar amount, it's about the principle of the matter, and I'm just going to paste the complaint I submitted to the metro page:

'Parking fees on July 4th should have been free because it's a federal holiday. The gates were wide open to accept cars on July 4th, there should have been an equal understanding that these parked cars are coming back late from independence Day festivities, and the parking fees should have been waived. If it's advertised all over the metro pages that transit is free and federal holidays have free parking, it should have been upheld. It was a rude shock when we were exiting the garage and suddenly had to pay and many drivers were very upset.'

This is the first time I've ever submitted a complaint of any form, and it's eating me alive. But I feel like it was false advertisement

Edit: we got to the station at 8:30pm, and because of the fireworks delay and the crowds, got back at 3am

Metro's appearance in Apple TV's Silo S3 Ep. 1

dupont circle station 😛 can't think of any other series or movie that's featured metro before that wasn't a fake station/stand-in...

Anyone have the conductor not open doors?

Red line train stopped, but didn't open doors ar Dupont Circle today. I was actually dropping off my compost and this almost messed it up. Fortunately another train was coming going back to Dupont Circle. Anyone else have this happen before? Did they just forget to open doors?

Greenbelt and College Park closures?

Drove to Greenbelt and went through the parking lot fare gates (open like on a weekend, I thought) and went all the way to the entrance before seeing one printed paper sign saying it was closed just today July 5. There was a bus shuttle and the driver kindly told us there was a closure at College Park too.

Is this emergency maintenance or something? A lot of other people were doing the same as me, going in all the way to the gated mezzanine before a sign something was off. There was no posting on wmata’s website that I saw. I understand if it’s an emergency but for a planned outage more notice would be good especially on a hot day.

A masked hate group being allowed to ride wmata is a wmata issue. Safe access to public transport is political

Ridiculous for mods to lock that post and basically say it has nothing to do with wmata aside from “some people riding the train.” The some people are a literal white supremacist hate group and wmata literally just allowed them to waltz on and ride. Imagine any other group or organization attempting to ride the metro like this? Silence is compliance. I’m sure y’all will remove this post as well, but imagine being that young woman in the photo. Public transport should be safe and accessible. These freaks are impeding on public safety and enjoyment of public services period.

Nice ride home on the red line after the fireworks

Had a quick, easy, air conditioned ride home after the fireworks. Even got a seat! Brief line for the escalator, and then only a five minute wait for a train; everything ran smoothly. What a treat after an ordeal on the mall. Thanks for making the ride to and from easy!

Improving Crowd Management at Future Special Events

I was glad to see another poster say that their red line ride home from the fireworks was quick and easy. However, I’m sure a lot of BOS riders (myself included) had a slightly less quick and easy trip.

I’d welcome some education on how WMATA currently structures their special event procedures, but have some specific improvements that I think should be made. I understand that 250 is a unique stress test and that the system was under more load after the fireworks than typical July 4 nights, but I still think there are areas where Metro fell short and should improve:

- CROWD CONTROL/PLATFORM AND BOARDING MANAGEMENT. There was a super effective WMATA person at Smithsonian yelling at people to move into the middle and back of the cars. None of the other stations had that. All the core stations should have personnel stationed at each car door entrance on the platform to make sure people getting off the train can get off first and encourage people to condense in the train. A lot of tourists don’t get that they needed to wait for people to get off first or move into the center of the car. Having more personnel proactively managing will improve passenger flow and reduce station dwell times for trains.

- ENTRY ONLY STATION BLOCKING. L’enfant’s north entrance (where there’s escalator work) only had one escalator going up, leading to significant crowding at the top of the escalator. The up escalator was barely used, and I felt bad for the two solitary people who were exiting and pushed their way through all of the crowd. Having both escalators be down escalators (and keeping core mall stations including l’enfant, smithsonian, and fed triangle entry-only for an hour after fireworks end) would alleviate top-entrance crowding and allow better flow.

- TRAIN CAR SEGMENTING. I understand WMATA already increases frequencies and I’m sure utilizes pocket tracks to their maximum ability during high volume events like the 4th. Despite frequency being pushed to the max, core station crowding loads aren’t spread evenly. My train at l’enfant filled up immediately and was able to accommodate only a handful of additional people. Barely anyone got off until past Rosslyn, and the platforms at l’enfant through Rosslyn were packed with people waiting to go eastbound. This means that actual boardings decrease dramatically after the first core station because of space constraints and that passengers at Rosslyn have to wait the longest to go eastbound. Spreading the boarding load across all stations is necessary to consistently draw down platform numbers at core stations. I’d approach this two ways: break 8-car trains into 2-car segments, where two cars are reserved for specific stations. (e.g. cars 1-2 board at l’enfant, cars 3-4 board at smithsonian, cars 5-6 board at fed triangle, cars 7-8 board at metro center) The doors on the assigned cars wouldn’t open until their reserved station, but after their reserved station open and close normally, allowing excess capacity to be used but ensuring a minimum capacity per train per station. Alternately, using entry-only policies on l’enfant-fed triangle, run trains in series. New In service empty trains take on their first passengers at l’enfant, smithsonian, and federal triangle and all advance to metro center. Once all three stations are cleared, a new series of empty trains move in to each core station to take on new passengers.

Why is nothing ever planted in the hyattsville crossing planters?

Always wondered what the point of this is

I just got off the metro, it’s now unlocked because of Fourth of July. But when I got on it about 15 minutes ago, I tapped in. Since I can’t tap out, will that cause any issues with my account?

**RESOLVED** Update I just called their customer service, they said that it should correct itself and charge me properly the next time I tap for a ride. Just letting y’all know in case anyone else is in the same boat as me!

🟢 Train 525 Derailment

At about 11:40AM ET, Greenbelt bound Train 525-3138 derailed while in approach to College Park station. The derailment occurred at the transition from elevated structure crossing the CSX tracks to grade level about 1,500 feet from the inbound end of College Park platform. Approximately 11 passengers were aboard the train with 1 reported minor injury.

Metro did not publicly acknowledge the derailment until around 12:30PM

I’m still reviewing the event - expect updates shortly

Word of caution

If you’re planning to go see the Metro 50 exhibit at the National Mall today and you’re already on the way there, you might want to pop into a Starbucks or other place to stay cool. They are NOT letting anyone in at any of the entrances until 12:00. Metro’s website says open from 10, but… just keep cool.

Just wondering: Next Train

I’ve noticed for a while now that the “Next Train” sign at Greenbelt station has not been working for a while. I don’t know if this is deliberate or if it’s just down for repairs. I think that it’s a useful sign especially for new riders who often look puzzled when on the platform.plus with service from both Green and Yellow lines, it could help in decision making for some. u/metroforward, is there an official word on this? Are other terminal stations this way as well?
