Seems like another summer where the Galley Place station is SWELTERING

This is a daily irritation for me. Why is the Gallery Place station always swelteringly hot? This morning, even though it’s mild and cool outside, the heating is clearly turned way up. Walking into the station from the outside air I could feel that wall of heat I crossed into.

Does this station only have heating and no cooling or something? All winter the heat is cranked up (and this may not be a universal opinion, but I don’t like tha either since I’m already bundled up) and in the summer it’s stuffy and hot. Even some of those big fans for the platforms would help.

Yesterday and today there have also been redline delays (not sure what the issue was today, but there were longer-than-normal wait times). It’s so annoying to show up to work a sweaty mess not because of the heat outside but because I got stuck standing in the GP sweat box for 9 minutes while I waited for a train.

70% fare evasion stat

Since WMATA is using this as justification for new fare evasion policy, Is anyone able to point me to where this data point comes from? Was there a study done or is there actual raw intake that’s on record? Did a quick search but all that came up were the recent articles not the source of the data.

Edit: adding link for context Metro crackdown on fare evasion draws union pushback over safety concerns

Green line operator this afternoon with style

Appreciate when operators put their own flair in the station announcements. I won't try to describe it but today's operator had full on Lil Wayne vibes. Especially loved "U Street CardozAH" and "Fort Tahhht". Welcomed the passengers and thanked them. Made me smile. Keep doing what you're doing.

Why does Lost and Found take so long, and why is Metro so unwilling to meet you halfway?

Equal parts genuinely asking and just kind of ranting.

I left my keys on the bus on Saturday, I guess they fell out of my pocket. I had an Airtag on them so I can see that they’re at the Four Mile Run bus division.

I’ve called and asked about retrieving them and been told I need to wait up to seven business days (!?) for them to get to New Carrollton so I can retrieve them. That seems like an outrageously long time to have to wait. Why on earth can’t this be done any faster? It just shocks me that a metro system with hundreds of thousands of riders can’t move any quicker.

When I call and ask if I can just go get them from Four Mile Run, even if I can’t go on the property just meet someone at the gate, even that gets cagey responses.

I just want my keys, man. Considering I know where they are and I’m offering to go get them I don’t feel like I’m asking for too much.

Yes I’ve filed a lost item report.

Just shocked such a simple task can take so long.

How do rail fares even work?

I was in DC yesterday with a friend to go out together and we took a route I am familiar with. It typically costs me about $4.40 from where we started to my home destination on a single trip. However, we got out earlier on the journey to go to this place and I was charged $2.25 okay. Let's say that there about 8 stops in the normal trip (this is along the same exact route), here we stopped right in the middle, so only 4 stops left to my usual last destination. Then we got back and then re-entered the same station we used to exit for the hang out, I was charged for those 4 stops from that station to my usual end destination $3.55. I was genuinely confused as I did not travel that far of a distance. I assumed that I would be charged the difference. It may seem small, but this really discourages me from heading into DC for these kinds of things too often.

Will the green line ever get good headways??

Writing this as I wait 15 minutes for another train to branch ave which always feels like it operates less frequently than the train going to greenbelt.

Genuinely so tired of having to wait so long for this train when they’re not even single tracking or doing work on the line.

And I mean good headways outside of a Nats or United game :/

Left on the red line

This cute baby was left on the red line going to Shady Grove yesterday afternoon. I am a mom and I know how precious these are to our babies. If this is yours please sent me a message and I will return him to you.

Red line this AM?

Anyone know what’s going on with the red line today? I’m at NoMa and watching it fall apart on the screens.

Supposed single tracking on red

There’s a problem between Brookland and Rhode Island for which they announced single tracking and although one train managed to move through on the opposite track, it’s been several minutes and no train has gone through in either direction according to MetroHero. This is not the first time I’ve experienced this and I just don’t know why, after all these years, they can’t actually DO single tracking when they intend to.

Does anyone have a Breda Ferroviaria plaque?

I miss that Breda plaque on the 2ks. Can't seem to find an image of it online.

Is the reason metro isn’t 24 hour only because of homelessness?

Genuine question. Me and my friend were talking and wondering why the metro doesn’t just run hourly all through the night. We have 24 hour buses it honestly makes no sense to me why at least the red line, silver line, or yellow line don’t run 24 hours.

If you have a red eye flight and get in super late, or you have a concert downtown, or your Amtrak train gets in past midnight you’re just screwed and end up paying 80 dollars for an uber.

Only thing me and my friend could come up with was: the sound of the train at night being loud, fear of people sleeping on the metro, and maybe cost of the operators (but we have 24 hour buses?)

elevator/escalator status page has been disappeared

I just tried to check if the elevators were in service at the station I was going to and it appears that the usual page (https://www.wmata.com/ride/elevators-escalators.html) no longer lists what is out of service at each station (it was kept updated real-time), it is now just a generic informational page.

I am disabled and this page was very helpful for me to check to see if a station I was going to would be accessible to me. I know you can sign up for alerts for specific stations, but being able to check the status real-time at any station was a really helpful feature that I am very disappointed has been taken away.

For an example of how this creates inconvenience: say I am signed up for alerts on the stations closest to work and home. One day, I have to swing by another station to run an errand. I would have no way to know in advance if the elevator is in service in that third station.

For another example, I used that page to discover that Dupont Circle had a long-term modernizing project on the elevator (it was out of service for a number of months). Again, there would be no way for me to know about that by signing up for alerts.

WMATA staff, this page was a very important service to people with disabilities, and also people without disabilities who have to use the elevator, like bike commuters or parents with strollers. Thank you for considering bringing it back.

How strictly is the transit subsidy monitored in the DMV?

A friend of mine regularly uses the transit subsidy offered by their organization. They are fully aware that the subsidy is strictly for mass transit commuting costs and is not supposed to be used for parking.

For context, they work in the Washington DC metropolitan area. What is the actual likelihood of the agency finding out or being alerted if they use the subsidy funds to pay for parking?

Does WMATA/the transit program cross-reference specific charge types with the agency, or is it mostly an honor system until a formal audit happens?

Thank you! Please hand out more tickets

Thank you WMATA for handing out tickets to people who chose to park like this! Time after time I am seeing more vehicles parked like this and taking up multiple spaces.

Folks need to stop bringing non-service dogs on the buses.

I'll get this right out in the open, I love dogs, I have a few myself, but I do not think to bring them on the buses.

Of course I have zero issues with service animals, but I'm sorry, a toy poodle or a Chihuahua does not qualify as a service dog.

This is stff that I have noticed in Virginia , as I do not ride buses in Maryland or DC (with the occasional trip to Georgetown) so I would not know about how bad it is in those jurisdictions.

I miss the L2 bus

Don’t get me wrong I do like the new bus system but I really miss having that direct way to get to Adams Morgan. At least the new version of the 96 (can’t remember the number) goes there, but I really miss being able to step out the door in Cleveland park and get to AM.

Arrests on buses?

The driver on my bus just made a verbal announcement that a program is beginning where Metro police will ride buses and arrest those who haven't paid their fare. Anyone know whether there is truth to this?

I'm sure the majority of passengers would be greatly in favor of this.
