my custom powerchair!

My first powerchair arrived today. It’s a Permobil M3 Corpus with power tilt and elevate.

I’m still a bit in shock that this even happened. I have known I needed a wheelchair for a long time now, but thought it would always be impossible for me because of the cost.

It sounds stupid, but I almost feel guilty for how smoothly the process went. I had been preparing myself for a months long battle with insurance, but they pretty quickly approved all the features I needed as medically necessary even though I haven’t used a manual. Insurance ended up paying 98%.

After hearing so many horror stories about NuMotion, I was still sort of waiting for the other shoe to drop, because my team was actually wonderful. I told myself that maybe the chair would be improperly sized, or driving it would be draining, or the bulkiness would be too annoying.

I honestly don’t even know how to feel now that I have my chair and it genuinely is just perfect. I have always felt like I was fighting against my other mobility aids, and even when I able to walk unassisted, I felt like I was fighting my body. To have control over something as basic as my own movements and be able to move without having to think about the impact it would have on my health feels amazing.

sculpture i made about my service dog’s early retirement

Had to retire/wash my service dog of several years due to health issues (mine, not his) recently and I guess I’m still grieving the plans I had for us as a team.

Anyway, this was my final project and it had to be a found object sculpture. I didn’t tell my class what it was really about, but sometimes it’s better that way
