Feed the Poor

So I went to Superstore today. When they asked me at checkout to round up my bill from $98.41 to $99 to "feed the homeless," I asked them something different instead:

“Would you guys mind rounding down instead? That way I can just hand the extra cash directly to someone outside your store, or save it up to donate straight to the food bank or donate it to an NPO and get a tax receipt”

Unsurprisingly, they chose not to do that.

Funny how that works, considering the Weston family (who owns Superstore, Loblaws, and Shoppers Drug Mart) sits comfortably among Canada’s richest dynasties with a net worth over $20 billion. Maybe multi-billion-dollar grocery empires can fund their own community outreach instead of using our checkout lines for a corporate PR tax write-off. We need more competition in Canadian Food DESPARATELY. The Big Three have a complete Monoploy and they are killing us. Hopefully after the upcoming housing crash the food prices will drop as well....

Something to think about next time you're asked to round up.
