21mo suddenly asking for 'cosleeping'?

Anyone else had an independent crib sleeper who went through a phase where they kept screaming and crying bcs they want u to sleep next to them in crib?

Ive tried laying down next to him several times in the past when he was sick etc, but it takes over an hour and he still wouldn't sleep bcs he thinks its playtime when I'm there. So I just gave up on that idea. I'm not opposed to laying down next to him till he sleeps, but it didn't work for us.

But now he's reaaaally struggling every night and wants me to stay with him. It breaks my heart. Is it just a phase? Should we start laying down with him? We have an extra twin low frame bed that we could move him to. I just don't want to move him so soon out the crib if hes an independent sleeper who wakes up happy in crib.

Anyone else with same experience?
